      • JOSEF JÍRA 1929 - 2005 - WINTER LANDSCAPE
        Dec. 04, 2024

        JOSEF JÍRA 1929 - 2005 - WINTER LANDSCAPE

        Est: -

Josef Jíra's landscapes are landscapes of the inner world in the spirit of expressionism released from the grip of simple descriptiveness. Edvard Munch was his great model. Josef Jíra's paintings are a testimony of mood, experiences and reflections on the world and memories. The unfussy and unpredictable depiction of the felt landscape contrasts with the rather detailed documentary depiction of the landscape on the reverse side of the painting. It speaks of Josef Jira's high sensitivity and at the same time his intention to present the landscape in ingenious artistic abbreviations with a strong emotional effect. Technique: oil on canvas, Signed: sign. lower right: J. Jíra 60

        Jun. 06, 2024

        JOSEF JÍRA 1929 - 2005 - FUR TRADER

        Est: -

Josef Jíra's paintings are often marked by the realities of Venovian life, experiences and narratives. He projected such unforgettable experiences onto the canvas, incalculably imprinting a piece of himself onto it, and remained true to his bold expression even in times when his manuscript went on the rampage against committed art and the condoning of suffering and crime. He sold paintings only unofficially and privately and was repeatedly investigated. He moved from Prague to Malá Skála, where he switched from the monstrous Eyes series to images of real people. The figure of the fur trader belongs to the inventory of that pure and sincere Jir's village landscape with a touch of childhood memories, which the author spread on the canvas all his life. Human lives inscribed in a face hypnotically challenging to see in it a certain inevitability of fate. A red ring of sun glows behind the fur trader, which also accompanies the farmer embracing for the last time the horse to be taken to the 1970-1971 slaughterhouse. Bohumil Hrabal responded to this image with the words: "The millennia are breaking and Jira painted it!" Technique: oil on canvas, Signed: sign. lower right: J. Jíra 75

Josef Jíra first studied at the jewelry vocational school in Turnov, but then moved to the AVU in Prague. He played a lot of sports, supported himself with promotional graphics and book illustrations. Jíra was a founding member of the M 57 group. The most significant influence on his work was expressionism, which he adapted to his own needs and projected into his landscape paintings. The rhythmic strokes with which he built the composition can only be described as visionary. In his view, the landscape is a strongly felt and spiritual place, strong emotions are hidden in the individual strokes that tied Josef Jíra to the given place. He is a master at portraying both pure romantic joy and tense internal conflict. Technique: tempera, ink, paper, Signed: sign. lower right: J. Jíra 1980

        JOSEF JÍRA 1929 - 2005 - REUNION

        Est: -

The painting originating from the studio of Josef Jíra with the inscription of his wife Ivana belongs to the mature work of the 1980s. The paintings were created as a result of the excited experience of internal disputes and conflicts, and in this sense they are full of tension and romantic drama. As he wrote about himself: "I am a person who has known joys and sorrows in my life, committed sins and tried to do good deeds. I lived comfortably and I also know the depth of the sewer in which so many people drowned..." The family tree of his evocative paintings of rhythmic handwriting and disturbingly resonant colors goes back to the visionaries of Expressionism. In the paintings in which he incorporates the motifs of his childhood, he develops a method of simultaneous association and permeation distant events. Technique: Oil on canvas, Signed: Unsigned

        JOSEF JÍRA 1929 - 2005 - A VIEW OF LA ROCHELLE

        Est: -

Josef Jíra probably acquired a taste for expressive modes of expression during his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under Miloslav Holý. In addition, numerous foreign stays, which he made especially in the 1960s and which provided him with knowledge of contemporary international work, contributed to this. It is known that he made a considerable number of drawing records from these trips. The offered veduta of the port of La Rochelle with its ships can be included in this group. The chalk technique used ensures a painterly soft blurring of forms, while the expressiveness lies in the richness of the colours. Signed: Dedication on the bottom right

        LANDSCAPE WITH A GOBLET

        Est: -

Josef Jíra initially studied at the technical school for jewelry-making in Turnov before moving to Prague to attend the Academy of Fine Arts. He played a lot of sports and made a living from commercial graphic design and book illustrations. Jíra was a founding member of the M 57 art group. Expressionism had the strongest impact on his work, and he adapted the movement to his own needs and reflected it in his landscape paintings. Josef Jíra painted this landscape of timbered houses and a church for his nephew in the spirit of Expressionism. Jíra always had a strong relationship with the countryside, which he placed in contrast to the hustle and bustle of modern times. The landscape is slightly concealed by blooming apple tree branches, pushed to the foreground with thick strokes of white paint and protruding from a glass goblet in the center of the composition.
