Cigar store Indian trade sign circa late 1870's. Jobin was a talented carver who began learning the trade before his teenage years.  After apprenticing under his uncle and spending years working in carving shops in New York City and Montreal, Jobin opened his own shop in 1876.  As the demand for ship's figureheads and sternboards was in decline at this time, the carver moved much of his effort to trade signs and religious carvings for churches and pilgrims.  Stands  78" tall including base.
