    Est: $10,000 - $15,000

DE JODE, Cornelis. (1568-1600). Totius Orbis Cogniti Universalis Descriptio. Antwerp: dated 1589 [but 1593]. Engraved world map, on a rectangular projection, image 360 x 508 mm (451 x 592 mm sheet). Surmounted by the title set in a framed cartouche, with two small hemisphere maps at each of the upper corners, Latin text on verso. (Very light browning along edges, short marginal tear to fold repaired on verso.) Matted and framed. Second edition from de Jode's Speculum Orbis Terrarum issued in 1593. The map was drawn up by Cornelis in November 1589, and printed by his father Gerard. The first edition of the Speculum was published by Gerard in 1587, in competition with Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. Unfortunately it failed to make the same popular impact, and relatively few copies were sold. Cornelius's son Gerard tried again with the second edition in 1593, but again the virtual monopoly of the Antwerp atlas market by Ortelius was not to be broken, and maps from all editions of the Speculum are rare. Shirley 165.

    Est: £3,000 - £5,000

[Asia] Asia Partium Orbis Maxima. [Antwerp: 1593]. Hand-coloured engraved map of Asia. 390 x 480mm. Title set in a decorative panel at the upper margin incorporating strapwork designs and two heads, seas decorated with galleys, ships, sea monsters and fisherman, the land with tents and men hunting, window mount. A very rare map of Asia published in the The Speculum Orbis Terrarae in Antwerp in 1593. Beautifully engraved and composed. Cornelis reissued his father's 1578 atlas in 1593 with a new map of Asia. Due to competition from Abraham Ortelius in the same city, both de Jode atlases did not sell well despite the quality of them, and neither were reprinted. Subsequently all de Jode maps are rare. Not in Tibbetts.

CATALOGUE NOTE Claude Comiers came from Embrun and was variously a military engineer, priest, teacher of mathematics and author. In 1677 he published La duplication de cube, la trisection de l'angle, etc., to which this work is a response. Jode's book is extremely rare, and has appeared twice at auction in the last 25 years, in the Honeyman sale and in 1998 in a selection of books from the library of M. de Vitry. "M. Frénicle de Bessy que vous connoissez par reputation pour ester extremement scavant dans les nombres" (Huygens, Oeuvres xi, 2). A number of the letters from early 1657 deal with the problem of cubes set by Fermat. In a letter to Claude Mylon, Fermat mentions that "M. Defréicle [sic] a resolu des questions, et M. Marin qui en a les solutions les fait imprimer a ce qu'on m'a dit" (Huygens, Oeuvres ii, 13).
