Freymodur Johannsson, Attr., Assassin, Iceland, c. 1930

      Est: €960 - €1,200

Oil on carton Presumably Iceland, around 1930 Attributed to Freymodur Johannsson (1895-1973) – Icelandic painter and composer Dramatic and full of suspense Dimensions of panel: 31.5 x 22 cm Very good condition This painting from around 1930 most probably created by Freymodur Johannsson is surrounded by a gloomy suspense atmosphere. It shows a nocturnal room which is lit by a burning candle. The peaceful sleeping man in the bed on the right hand side of the image is however disturbed, because a dark figure enters the room through a door on the left side. The candlelight has not yet reached the intruder and thus only his hand that pushes the door open as well as a flashing dagger in his other hand are visible. From the dagger the viewer is drawn to the outlines of a figure lying at the feet of the stranger and who was probably just stabbed to death. The predominantly dark colors add to the sinister mood of the painting. Picture and frame are in a very good condition showing minimal signs of age and wear. The edges of the panel shows minimal color flaking where the frame has rubbed. The panel measures 31.5 x 22 cm. Freymodur Johannsson (1895-1973) The Icelandic artist was born in 1895 in Iceland and studied art in Copenhagen and other cities. He was one of the few Icelandic painters who developed a romantic photorealistic style. Yet some of his works mirror the gloomy atmosphere that occurs during the long Icelandic winters. Not only was he popular as painter, his musical compositions were also very famous. (nlu) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance. Oil on cartboard Iceland, around 1930 Attributed to Freymodur Johannsson (1895-1973) – Icelandic painter and composer Mysterious theatrical composition Dimensions of panel: 31.5 x22 cm Very good condition The Icelandic artist Freymodur Johannsson is most probably the creator of this mysterious work reminiscent of Goethe’s Mephisto. The painting shows Mephistopheles, who is positioned in the foreground in the entrance to a building. The nocturnal city is deserted. The devil is dressed in a long black coat and his head is leaning against the wall of the house. A ray of light lits up his upper body: it is the night of a full moon. The grey, brown and black colors are applied with a visible paint brush and together with the light-shadow-effects and the gloomy appearance of the devil the picture is of a very dubious radiance. Painting and frame are in a very good condition. The edges of the panel shows minimal color flaking where the frame has rubbed. The panel measures 31.5 x 22 cm.
