Augustus Edwin John Sold at Auction Prices

Figure painter, Painter, Etcher, Lithographer, Portrait painter, Landscape painter, Water color painter, Plastic Art, Genre Painter, Flower painter, Still life painter, b. 1878 - d. 1961

(b Pembrokeshire, England, 1878; d Hampshire, England, 1961) Welsh Painter. After the death of his mother, Augustus Edwin John and his sister moved to Wales where they had a free and unruly childhood. They attended the Slade School in London from 1895 to1898, where Augustus was recognized for his artistic talents. In 1901, John married his first wife, Ida Nettleship, and in 1903, he met his mistress, Dorthy McNeill, who later became his wife after Ida died. Throughout his life, John was particularly interested in the rich culture of Roma people, whom he referred to as Gypsies. He would seek them out as he traveled across England in a caravan, studying the Romany language and drawing them. Although John was famous for his drawings, the majority of his works were portraits. He painted portraits of his wives and family, as well as many distinguished contemporaries such as T. E. Lawrence and W. B. Yeats. His use of elegant outlines catches the unerringly striking and usually unfamiliar aspect of his subjects, reveal their psychological insights, many of which were considered cruel. John’s early style was characterized by long, rhythmic outlines, however, around the time of Ida’s death, John's drawing style changed, showing influences of the works by Ingres and Picasso. John was a leader of the New English Art Club; a Royal Academician of the Royal Academy in 1928; he was named to the Order of Merit by King George VI in 1942; a trustee of the Tate Gallery from 1933-1941; the President of the Royal Society of Portrait Painter from 1948 to 1953. His sister, Gwendolen Mary John, was also a distinguish artist. (Credit: Christie’s, London, United Kingdom, British Art on Paper, June 5, 2007, Lot 107.)

Augustus Edwin John United Kingdom, England, France, (1878 - 1961) Composition of Nudes, 1915 ink wash on paper Artist label verso. Exhibited: The Chenil galleries, Chelsea, London, Purchaser John Quinn Esq. 1916. Inscribed verso: artist catalog #60/61. John Quinn (1870-1924) was a corporation lawyer in New York City who amassed an important private collection of paintings, drawings and sculpture as well as books and manuscripts of contemporary authors. From an important art collection, Indianapolis, IN. Biography from the Archives of askART: Augustus John was born in 1878 in Tenby, on the Welsh coast. His father was a prosperous and eminently proper lawyer. When John insisted on going to art school, his father dubiously packed him off to the Slade School of Art in London with a tiny allowance and a heavy load of advice. Out of sight of home, John grew a beard, took to parting his russet hair in the middle and wearing golden earrings. He visited Paris in 1898 and returned there every year. John remembers that in his student days at London's Royal Academy, he was "enslaved" by two famous Americans who had great successes in London, Whistler and Sargent. John learned from both and came to paint personalities just as brilliantly, charmingly and revealingly as his masters had. He placed his technique at the service of his subject matter, and this instinct, which most modern painters scorn, is the first essential of portraiture. In 1901 he married Ida Nettleship; from 1901 to 1902 he taught art in Liverpool. In 1903 he met Dorelia McNeil who joined John and Ida in a menage-a-trois, until the death of Ida in 1907. He had a total of nine children, and at first carried his growing family about with him in a caravan. He made a habit of dropping in on gypsy encampments; the gypsies represented everything his father had tried to warn him against. To the most militant admirers of modern art, there is something baffling in John's brilliance: his painting was a whole lifetime behind the times. He lived all his life across the Channel from Picasso and Matisse, and yet he was never influenced in any way by their modern art. In 1903 he had his first exhibition, shared with his sister, Gwen. From 1901 until 1904 he served as Professor of Painting at Liverpool University and from 1911 until 1914 he worked with George Inness in Wales. In 1921 he was elected an Associate Royal Academician; in 1928 he was named Royal Academician, but was always out of step with their conservatism. In 1938 he resigned and in 1940 he was re-elected. His enemies called him a great ham actor; his cronies bedecked his name with legends, most of which centered around his prowess in pub and boudoir. He lived in Manhattan for a while, lunching regularly at the Colony Restaurant, partying all over town at night. John tried to be indifferent to money, but it bothered him; it would keep pouring in. His genius for portraiture was evident from the start; the wealthy and the near-great begged for the chance of being immortalised by him. His posh commissions enabled him to set up his family in a rambling guest-filled country house on the Avon River. He died in 1961. His description of that time recorded in Chiascuro pp. 109-111, paints a colourful picture of the nomadic life:I was introduced to, and received hospitality by, some two score of persons. The meal was followed by songs and dances, executed with great brilliance by the younger members of the society. Upon rising to take my leave, I was persuaded to remain the night and was soon slumbering between the quilts in a corner of one of the single roomed huts. [...] A week passed thus before I took leave of the band and then only on the understanding that I should rejoin them at MilanWe are grateful to Rebecca John for her kind assistance in cataloguing this work.

Augustus Edwin John (United Kingdom, 1878-1961) Madonna 1939 Signed lower right. A letter with this lot on letterhead from the artist's studio reads: My Dear Mrs Cazalet, Do you think The Queen would sit for me at Windsor week-ends for an informal portrait? It would be wonderful if she would and I would have it in my show in America which Francis Taylor is organising. I would stay in some pub and no doubt there's a suitable room in the castle for painting. If she had a pretty costume with a hat I'm sure it would be a success and probably put Poppet in the shade. Please, please, propose it to Her Majesty. Francis Taylor is taking all my beloved drawings and things away (many of which I tore up by-the-by in a fit of madness, but he has pieced them together again!) Yours affectionately, Augustus. Portrait of Robin is typical of John's output during this period - he would draw directly onto the panel and paint at speed, leaving small areas of bare wood and pencil showing. These panels are among some of his most sought after works. Robin was born in 1904 and was Augustus's third son with his first wife, Ida.
