Gwendolen John Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1876 - d. 1939

Born in Wales in 1876, artist Gwen John created paintings that are famous for their subject matter, many of which were anonymous female sitters. John lived most of her life in France, and she showed artistic talent at an early age. She and her famous brother, Augustus, attended the Slade School of Art. She later studied at the Academie Carmen in Paris under James McNeill Whistler, and Gwen John's paintings were first exhibited in London in 1900.

One of Gwen John's famous drawings is A Study of Rodin's Daniad in His Studio, which was created in charcoal. She was obsessively in love with Rodin from their first meeting in 1904 until his death in 1917. As an artist, Gwen John produced much work, but only became famous after her death in 1939. Her artwork is much sought after today by collectors across the world. You can find vintage figurative paintings for sale at auction and online.

GWEN JOHN (BRITISH, 1876-1939) GWEN JOHN (BRITISH, 1876-1939) A Girl and Two Nuns in Church signed 'Gwen John' (lower right) gouache and watercolour 16 x 14 cm. (6 1/4 x 5 1/2 in.) Exhibited London, Anthony d'Offay, Gwen John 1876-1939 Centenary Exhibition, 3-26 Mar 1976, cat.no.44 "Gwen John taught me to be quiet in my art. She taught me that silence could be as important as what is said" - Celia Paul Born in 1876 in Wales, Gwen John, is without a doubt, one of the most significant figures within the 20th-Century British art scene. Despite her place alongside that of her brother Augustus John, her contributions extend far beyond these familial ties, and in her own right she holds a significant space within the story of British art. Her works have been characterised in their subdued, soft and subtle pallets and their introspective stillness. The prominence of portraiture in her oeuvre makes it unsurprising that, in her writing for the Gwen John 1876-1939 Centenary Exhibition at Anthony d'Offay, Mary Taubman remarked, "For every Gwen John portrait, no matter how carefully observed and exquisitely executed, there is, in a sense, also a self-portrait." John’s inner world is captured in many examples of her work with a sense of poise and serenity. She is remembered for her somewhat reclusive lifestyle and her preference for introspective themes, whether this is demonstrated in the exploration of her own image through delicately rendered self-portraits or depictions of quiet, intimate spaces such as, A Corner of the Artist’s Room in Paris (circa 1907-9). In the case of Gwen John’s A girl and two nuns in church, Mary Taubam’s statement could not strike more true. Many of her portraits capture in essence stillness, intimacy, emotional depth and sensitivity, and this gouache is no exception. Converting to Catholicism in her twenties, in 1913, faith became a centre aspect of the artist’s identity. Gwen John’s relationship with Catholicism deeply informed her artistic vision, enriching her portrayal of human beings in her portraits. Time and time again John’s artistic process of repetition reflects her deep engagement with a variety of subject matter. In this case, there are many iterations of figures in a church, whether it is her rendering of Two girls in church, Two girls in church, praying or Six small church groups, among many other examples, John remonstrates her understanding of not only form and expression but also emotion. Repetition becomes in essence both the artist’s process of exploring subject matter and the vehicle in which she is able to uncover layers of meaning and expose her own evolving perspective. Recent exhibitions, such as "Gwen John: Art and Life in London and Paris" at Pallant House Gallery and her inclusion in Tate Britain’s "Now You See Us: Women Artists in Britain 1520-1920," underscore her impact and importance. John's unique style and perspective position her alongside other notable artists of her time and demonstrate her legacy in the broader narrative of British art.

Cecily Langdale, Gwen John: A Retrospective Exhibition, an exhibition catalogue, Davis & Long Company, New York, 1975, p. 39, no. 39 (illustrated). Note Long overshadowed by her brother Augustus John and famous lover Auguste Rodin, Gwen John is now considered one of the greatest female artists of the 20th century. The Welsh artist spent much of her childhood drawing alongside her brother, both greatly influenced by their late mother, an amateur artist. In 1895, she went to London and attended the Slade School, where she received various prizes. Three years later, she ventured to Paris and studied at the Académie Carmen, where she learned under James Abbott McNeill Whistler for six months. John would reside in France for nearly the entirety of her life, having her work shown at the New English Art Club (1899), the Carfax Gallery (1903), and the Société du Salon d’Automne (1910). John would also be shown in numerous American exhibitions during her time, thanks to wealthy patron John Quinn. Her only solo show would be in 1926 at Chenil Galleries in London. Study of Girl Reading is imbued with John’s quintessential style found in her paintings. Subjects throughout her career were almost always women and young girls. The pieces are characterized by their subtlety containing a simple background and often three-quarter-length figure. This composition closely aligns with her introversion and preference for solitude. In a letter to her brother, Whistler would attribute Gwen with a “fine sense of tone.” A proficiency is clearly demonstrated by John’s use of dark wash on the figure’s cap and arm, as well as the use of pencil below the book. The work captivates through its seeming quietness. In relation to her often-characterized boisterous and exuberant brother, Gwen is perceived as subdued and full of humility. Yet according to Augustus, the two “were not opposites” but rather very similar. At one exhibition of her work, where critics largely ignored pieces like this, one of them wrote, “To me, the little pictures are almost painfully charged with feeling, even as their neighbours are empty of it. Gwen’s pictures are simply staggering.” Despite its relative small size, Study of Girl Reading is an impactful work that expresses the inner talent of an oftentimes overlooked figure. It is a reflection of the life and work of someone whose eulogy would later state, “Few on meeting this retiring person in black, with her tiny hands and feet, a soft, almost inaudible voice, and delicate Pembrokeshire accent, would have guessed that here was the greatest woman artist of her age, or, as I think, of any other.” To request a condition report or additional images please contact Raphael Chatroux at rchatroux@freemansauction.com

Gwen John, British 1876-1939 - Two Women and a Nun in a Church, late 1910s-early 1920s; gouache and watercolour on paper, 22.4 x 17.4 cm Provenance: The Geoffrey and Fay Elliot collection. With Davis & Langdale Company, Inc., New York, no.DLA-1279; private collection; thence by descent Exhibited: Davis & Langdale Company, Inc., New York, American and British Works on Paper, 11th October - 12th November, 1988, no.17 Note: One of the most unique and elusive voices in Modern British painting, Gwen John is renowned for her intimate interiors of women and children. The sister of Augustus John, Gwen moved to Paris in 1903, giving a distinctive European touch and palette to her work, reminiscent of Eduard Vuillard, which creates a quiet yet intense atmosphere. The artist made a number of works depicting church congregations, usually depicted the figures from behind. These works have a fluency to their rapidly applied brushes of gouache. The artist converted to Roman Catholicism in 1913, so the church became central to her solitary life. August John famously stated, 'in 50 years' time, I will be known as the brother of Gwen John.' Her work is in all major UK public collections, including Tate, the Yale Centre for British Art and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. Other works from this series of figures in church are found in the National Museum of Wales. Floated in mount and held in a glazed, partially gilded, moulded wooden frame, with scuff marks. Appears to be affixed in each corner but unexamined out of frame. Edges visible. Left, bottom and right in very good condition, with only very minor wear. Top edge is worn; paper appears to have been removed from a sketchbook or similar. Slight undulation to top right corner. Slight wear to the painted surface along lower left edge. Painted surface otherwise in very good condition and colours fresh throughout. Overall, very good condition.

Gwen John (Welsh 1876-1939) Study for The Nun (study) pencil on buff paper 28 x 19.5cm Footnote: Provenace According to a gallery label to the reverse, the drawing was given by Gwen John to George Lambourn and thence to his widow With Michael Parkin Fine Art Ltd. In the winter of 1912-13, following a tempestuous, passionate and, above all, transformative affair with Auguste Rodin, Gwen John was received into the Catholic Church. Frequently and ardently worshipping at the local convent in Meudon, a Parisian suburb, John became closely acquainted with the Dominican Sisters of Charity and was soon commissioned to create a portrait of their foundress, Marie Poussepin. Obsessively committed to her task, John spent the next eight years producing a total of six portraits of Mère Poussepin and spent a further four years creating at least eleven more portraits of nuns. The present work dates from the mid to late 1910s, and is believed to be a study for John’s The Nun, circa 1915-21 which was purchased by the Tate Gallery in 1940. We are grateful to Cecily Langdale and Rebecca John for their assistance with authenticating the present work.
