[BWV 225, 228, Anhang III 159], Leipzig: bey Breitkopf und Härtel, [1802], FIRST EDITION, 48 pages, folio (34.8 x 26cm), type-set text and music, bookplate of Alfred Cortot to verso of title and his stamp to title, inscribed by him in pencil on verso of title, remains of paper backstrip, modern cloth folder, some browning Grosse Passionsmusik nach dem Evangelium Johannis...Partitur [BWV 245] [score], Berlin: Trautwein, 1831, FIRST EDITION OF THE ST. JOHN PASSION, 113 pages, folio (32.5 x 25.5cm), engraved throughout, lithographed frontispiece portrait of Bach, plate number 370, manuscript presentation/ownership inscriptions (front pastedown: "From the Earl of Cawdor to Sir George Smart June 24 1854"; front endpaper: "T.G. Odling"), nineteenth-century green half morocco, some scattered spotting; bound together with editions of three other works (Bach's 'Coffee' Cantata, C.P.E. Bach's Magnificat and a Te Deum Laudamus by Hasse) Studio o sia Tre Sonate per il Violino solo senza Basso [BWV 1001-1006], Bonn: N. Simrock, [1802], FIRST EDITION OF THE COMPLETE CYCLE OF THREE SONATAS AND THREE PARTITAS FOR SOLO VIOLIN, 43 pages, 4to, engraved throughout, ownership inscription to title ("Sim: Ehrlich"), modern brown cloth, some leaves trimmed to plate, slightly affecting pagination in places No. 2. Herr! deine Augen sehen nach dem Glauben etc...Clavierauszug [vocal score] [BWV 102], Bonn: N. Simrock, [after 1830], 17 pages, oblong 4to (c.27 x 34cm), engraved throughout, plate number 2891, unbound, edges browned   Bach’s motets, with his cantatas, constitute some of his finest choral music. The first two items contain some of his best music in this genre. The third item Ich lasse dich nicht is tentatively attributed in many sources to Bach’s uncle, Johann Christoph Bach. However, more recently the pendulum of attribution has swung back towards Johann Sebastian himself. If it is by him, it is regarded as a very early work indeed (see Wolff (2000), p.111).  LITERATURE: RISM B 437 (BWV 245), 447 (BWV 225, 228, Anhang III 159), and Hoboken, i 13 (BWV 225, 228, Anhang III 159); Schmieder, p.733 (BWV 1001-1006) PROVENANCE: Alfred Cortot (BWV 225, 228, Anhang III 159); Otto Haas (BWV 245)

          Est: £3,000 - £5,000

JOHN [ROSS] MACDONALD The Moving Target John [Ross] Macdonald "MACDONALD, John [Ross] (1915-1983). The Moving Target. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1949. "Presentation copy of the first edition, inscribed by the author to friend and fellow writer John Ball. Ball (1911-1988) worked predominantly in the mystery and crime genre and is most famous for works featuring the African-American detective Virgil Tibbs, such as In the Heat of the Night (1965) and Johnny Get Your Gun (1969). The Moving Target is the first full-length novel by Miller to feature the character of Lew Archer and is written under the lesser known pseudonym John Macdonald, rather than the more famous and widely used Ross Macdonald. Upon its release Anthony Boucher of the New York Times Book Review wrote ‘Human compassion and literary skill returns the much-abused hard-boiled detective story to its original Hammett-high level’ (quoted in Nolan, Ross Macdonald, 1999, p.113). The novel was the basis of the 1966 film Harper, starring Paul Newman. "Octavo. Original pictorial orange cloth with green target design to upper cover and spine (corners slightly rubbed and tailcap lightly bruised, spine faded); original pictorial dust-jacket by Bill English, price-clipped, rear flap with photograph by Dey Studio, supplied from another copy (spine panel somewhat faded and lightly frayed at head, extremities lightly rubbed with small chip to one corner, dampstain to foot of spine, a few light creases); housed in modern red leather clamshell box, spine lettered and decorated in gilt. Provenance: John Ball (authorial presentation inscription on front endpaper: ‘To John Ball with admiration and best wishes Ken Miller) — The White house (bookseller’s sticker to inside rear cover).
