ALFRED B. MULLETT'S CIVIL WAR ERA AUTOGRAPH ALBUM, LINCOLN AND JOHNSON ERA ARCHITECT, SIGNED BY SIX PRESIDENTS: LINCOLN, JOHNSON, GRANT, ARTHUR, GARFIELD, CLEVELAND Architect hired by Lincoln and Johnson to design Federal Buildings symbolizing the power and stability of the Federal government. Following the Civil War, Alfred B. Mullett became Supervising Architect in 1866 and helped bring attention to the federal building program by designing more elaborate federal buildings. Ornate new government buildings in major cities such as Boston, New York, and Philadelphia called to mind the prosperity of the nation. Red leather book with “Autograph Album” in gilt letters on front; label pasted lower left front cover: “Metropolitan Book Store, Philp & Solomon’s; Agents, Pennsylvania Ave., Washington D.C.” Title page pre-printed in gold: ”Autographs, J.B. Lippincott & Co., Philadelphia.” Red pen ownership inscription on ffep: “A.B. Mullett/ Daisy C. Mullett/ L. F. Schmeckebier/ Suzanne M. Smith.” Autograph album with approx. 115 signatures was originally assembled by Alfred B. Mullett (1834-1890) an English-born American architect known for his Second Empire-influenced designs for government buildings, notably the State, War and Navy Building, now the Eisenhower Old Executive Office Building in Washington, D.C. Mullett served with the Union Army and relocated to Washington D.C. in 1863. He served from 1866 to 1874 as Supervising Architect at the Treasury Department, overseeing the design of federal government buildings from Louisiana to Maine. The majority of the signatures collected in the album date from circa 1866 to circa 1889, and include Presidents Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson, Ulysses S. Grant (2 signatures), James A. Garfield, Chester Alan Arthur and Grover Cleveland. Other notable signatures include First Lady Frances Garfield, Civil War military leaders General George B. McClellan, Thaddeus Stevens, Brigham Young, Charles Francis, the Arctic explorer, and autographs from U.S. and state Cabinet Secretaries, Senators and House Representatives. Signatures toward the end of book mostly date from the early 19th Century with approx. 15 signed items laid in including 2 calling cards from Grover Cleveland (1837-1908) with signature as President during his second term in office, with 1894 date on preprinted “Executive Mansion, Washington” calling card; Frances F. Cleveland (1864-1947) on undated preprinted “Executive Mansion, Washington” calling card, both 2 3/4 by 4 1/2 in. Frances Clara Folsom Cleveland was married in the Executive Mansion, the only time a president married while in the White House, and at age 21, she remains the youngest wife of a sitting president. She was First Lady from 1886 to 1889 and again from 1893 to 1897. Also laid in is autographed note signed by James Randolph Garfield (1865-1950) on Secretary of the Interior stationery. He was the son of President Garfield and First Lady Lucretia Garfield and served as Secretary of the Interior during Theodore Roosevelt's administration. Also Civil War preprinted U.S. Order for Transportation for A.B. Mullett, dated July 24, 1865, from Richmond to Petersburg, signed by officers lower left and on reverse; several signatures on 3 pages removed from a different autograph album; calling card for Mrs. Fremont, overwritten with introduction of architect Mr. Carl Pfeiffer to Mr. Mullett; John Sherman, brother of William Tecumseh Sherman, cut signature, etc. Provenance: Descendant of Alfred B. Mullett
