He painted his first nature studies in 1849, and that year first received public acclaim for his work exhibited at the National Academy of Design* and the American Art Union*. In 1860, he was elected a full Academician.

          Aug. 08, 2023

David Johnson (1827 - 1908), View of Fort Montgomery from Bald Hill.

          Est: $600 - $900

Pencil on paper. 10 x 17 1/2 in. David Johnson’s understated yet wonderful drawing of a hilly landscape in fact depicts the site of an important battle in the history of the Revolutionary War in which the British and Loyalist soldiers regained some control of the Hudson River Valley in 1777. Johnson’s perspective contributes grandeur to the scene as the river winding through the hills create sentiments of majesty and awe. Nearby, Johnson notably painted the Hudson River from Fort Montgomery (1870), which depicts the historic fort perched atop a rocky outcropping overlooking the Hudson River. The simplicity of drawing is an enlightening counterpoint to the oil, as it presents as a skillful study of the landscape.

        • David Johnson (1827 - 1908), Black Mountain, Lake George.
          Aug. 08, 2023

David Johnson (1827 - 1908), Black Mountain, Lake George.

          Est: $600 - $900

Pencil on paper. 9 3/4 x 19 in. Black Mountain, Lake George depicts a traveler resting on the bank of Lake George, perhaps after a day of canoeing. The lake separates Black Mountain from the Adirondacks, and David Johnson pays homage to the unique geography. The archetype of the traveler was prominent in the works of Hudson River School artists, as immersing oneself within the natural landscape and traveling to places that could evoke wonder and sentimentality in order to find subjects for paintings were highly common. This drawing is no exception: the simple lines communicate a sense of pleasant weariness and harken the well-known idyllic beauty of the area. Starting in the 1860s, the artist began using lake scenes as a compositional format – sometimes embellishing the scene in front of him with elements borrowed from other landscapes. However, Black Mountain, Lake George, remains a loyal depiction of the vista, as well as a record of the artist’s travels.

David Johnson (1827 - 1908), Tongue Mountain, Lake George.

          Est: $600 - $900

Pencil on paper. 11 x 18 1/4 in. Depicting the opposite bank from Black Mountain, Lake George, Tongue Mountain, Lake George is the third landscape pencil drawing from the Lay Family Collection. Often, Johnson’s landscapes were painted with great precision and meticulous attention to detail. This piece reflects his characteristic sweeping vistas, with slight but important variations in the greenery across the lake and strong lines depicting the face of the mountain, as the delicate lines of the lake provide a counterpoint. Johnson’s drawings served as preparatory studies for his paintings, helping him determine compositional and lighting details before beginning the final piece. Yet, many of Johnson’s drawings stand on their own as works of art in themselves, capturing the same level of fine detail and naturalism found in his paintings. Furthermore, some of Johnson’s sketches were reproduced as illustrations in books and magazines during his career. The drawing is in good condition with minor creases throughout.

          David Johnson (American, 1827-1908)

          Est: $3,000 - $5,000

David Johnson (American, 1827-1908), "Byram Lake, NY", oil on board, monogrammed lower right, signed, titled and inscribed en verso, 7 3/4 in. x 11 3/4 in., framed, overall 11 3/4 in. x 15 7/8 in. x 1 5/8 in. Note: David Johnson was a self-taught artist born in New York City in 1827. While Johnson did briefly take painting lessons with Jasper Cropsey, it is likely that his time with Cropsey was simply an opportunity for him to hone his already well-established talent. By that time, he had experienced several career milestones such as exhibiting with the National Academy of Design as well as the American Art Union. Johnson was an Associate of the National Academy of Design, then was later chosen as a full Academician. He also exhibited at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia where he won a first-class medal in art and at the 1877 Paris Salon. The 1870s marked the peak of Johnson’s career and a shift in his style as his canvases began to reflect the influence of the French Barbizon School. Like many of his contemporaries, he spent time in popular locales of the Northeast including Lake George, White Mountains, and the Catskills as well as central New York state. He faithfully recorded many pastoral and river landscape scenes, such as the painting offered here which features his distinctive intertwined monogram that he adopted in the 1860s. This piece, entitled “Byram Lake, NY,” is reminiscent of Johnson’s later style with a hazy mountainous background and dark, lush trees echoing the Barbizon School and perfectly showcasing how the artist earned the nickname “American Rousseau.” Ref.: American Paradise: The World of the Hudson River School. AD: ART CONSIGNMENTS WANTED. CONTACT US David Johnson (New York, 1827 - 1908) David Johnson was a member of the second generation of Hudson River School painters. Johnson was born in New York City, New York. He studied for two years at the antique school of the National Academy of Design and also studied briefly with the Hudson River artist Jasper Francis Cropsey. Along with John Frederick Kensett and John William Casilear, he was best known for the development of Luminism. On the back of a painting made at Haines Falls, Kauterskill Clove, in 1849, Johnson wrote "My first study from nature. Made in company with J.F. Kensett, and J.W. Casilear,". By 1850, Johnson was exhibiting regularly at the National Academy of Design in New York, where he became an associate in 1859; in 1861 he was elected a full Academician. Johnson's signature works are usually small in format, tightly painted, delicately handled and richly colored. Based on copious preliminary drawings and studies of specific trees in their natural environment, his paintings are accurate and inviting representations of Northeastern scenery and 'exquisite examples of the style that is now called Luminism.' Johnson painted numerous Lake George scenes between the late 1860s and early 1870s, including View of Dresden, Lake George. Johnson's greatest success was achieved during the mid-1870s, when he exhibited paintings of such popular landscape locales as the Catskills, Lake George and the White Mountains, as well as pastoral scenes of central New York state, an area which he was the only important artist of the era to frequent. He exhibited extensively in major American art centers, including Chicago, Boston and Philadelphia, and at the Paris Salon of 1877. Thenceforward his work changed to reflect the influence of the French Barbizon school, a stylistic transition that met with harsh critical reception from his colleagues, but which paralleled the dilemma faced by Hudson River school painters seeking to stay relevant as aesthetic tastes changed. Bayside, New Rochelle, New York is an example of Johnson's later work, when the Barbizon influence eclipsed his earlier debt to the Hudson River school. Johnson died in Walden, New York, in 1908.
