        Harvey William Johnson (1921 - 2005) "Power of the Bear" Oil on Board. Traditional painter of historical Western scenes, born in New York City in 1921 and moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1975. To get started as an illustrator, he worked in an art studio for six months with no pay, then painted Westerns for men's pulp magazines. Afterwards he spent nineteen year as an instructor at the Famous Artists School in Westport, Connecticut, where the well-known illustrator Harold Von Schmidt told Johnson about the market for Western paintings. Johnson was named a charter member of the Cowboy Artists of American and was in its first show in 1966. One painting hung in Arizona Governor Babbitt's office for two years and in the American embassy in Paris for two years. The Apprehension of the Stage Robbers was commissioned by the city of Albuquerque in 1992 and hangs in the city council chambers. His paintings are on permanent exhibition in the CA Museum in Kerrville, Texas. Inspection with the unaided eye reveals nothing of issue. Close inspection under UV light reveals an area of over painting at the immediate left in the shrubbery. This area measures approximately 1 1/4 x 1 1/2”. There are other tiny spots of inpainting along the horse’s front legs. The work is framed in a rustic carved brown molding with a linen liner.
