      att. Francis Morton Johnson (1878-1931), A Portrait of Eliza Bailey Masters oil on canvas, unsigned, early 20th century, inscribed "Masters" on the stretcher, inscribed "Francis M. Johnson" on the original cardboard backing, presented under glass within a fine period gilt composition frame. SS 28.75 x 23.5 in.; DOA 37.5 x 31.5 in. Eliza Bailey Masters (1845-1921) founded the Masters School at Dobbs Ferry, New York, originally known as the "Misses Masters' Boarding and Day School for Young Ladies and Children," in 1877. The daughter of a devout Presbyterian family, Masters believed in educating young woman beyond just a "finishing school" - her students were taught Latin, mathematics, astronomy, and social work.       Francis Morton Johnson (1878 - 1931)

      Francis Morton Johnson (Massachusetts / France, 1878 - 1931) Oil on canvas painting of rooftops in winter. Signed lower right. Francis Morton Johnson was born in Boston, and as a young man he left for Paris to pursue his artistic education. He studied at the Academy Julian and exhibited at the Galerie Georges Petit and Salon de Artistes François with other fellow artists Louis Rittman, Richard Miller, Preston Dickenson, Aston Knight. In the United States Johnson exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. The artist was also known for inventing a device for registering the human voice on motion picture films in 1919. Sight size: 21 x 14.5 in. Overall Size: 24.5 x 17.75 in. Framed behind glass.
