            Est: €3,000 - €5,000

Nevill Johnson (1911-1999) Kilkeel (c.1946) Oil on canvas, 40 x 60cm (16 x 24'') Signed with monogram; inscribed verso Kilkeel was probably included in the first exhibition Nevill Johnson took part in with Victor Waddington in 1947, soon after he was taken on as a gallery artist. It belongs to a small group of paintings in which Johnson included the most appropriate of the driftwood, shells and stones he collected in the mid-1940s from the shores of Lough Neagh. Their arrangement suggests unease or struggle between these anthropomorphic forms into which human and animal life has been mutated by some apocalyptic event. Painted in response to the Second World War, this group of works also express a more profound consciousness of the fears and despair of the atomic age. This is the existential psychological landscape of the post-war world, at the edge of sea and land and illuminated in a mysterious, nocturnal glow, and there is an interesting comparison with Francis Bacon in the blurred, turning profile of the left-hand 'head' of the large driftwood form. S.B. Kennedy wrote of Johnson's paintings in this period that 'along with Jack B. Yeats' Tinker's Encampment: The Blood of Abel, 1940, Kenneth Hall's Après la Guerre and Middleton's Our Lady of Bikini [they] are amongst the most poignant images of war and its effects painted by any artist in Ireland in the modern period'. Nevill Johnson RHA RUA (1911-1999) The Bond (1980)

            Est: €1,500 - €2,500

Nevill Johnson RHA RUA (1911-1999) The Bond (1980) acrylic on canvas signed, titled and dated verso h:41  w:51 cm. Provenance: Tom Caldwell Galleries Ltd, Dublin (label verso); Private Collection Exhibited: Tom Caldwell Galleries 1982 Autobiographical references within Nevill Johnson's work are usually oblique and rarely obvious; even his self-portrait in the Irish National Self-Portrait Collection is more concerned with an analysis of the idea of the self than with a straightforward image representing the artist. With its atypical sense of narrative, it is interesting to consider whether The Bond might be a reference to Johnson's second marriage, to Maggie, with whom he lived in west London at this time. The complex, fragmented interior is composed of a series of flat and occasionally tilted planes that recall Johnson's great interest in Picasso, as does his calligraphic and deceptively simple manner of notating and describing objects such as the vase and lamp on the table. A table in the foreground is tilted towards the viewer and its leg seems to bisect the painting, dividing the two figures. The title, and the apparent unity of the man and woman both set in the foreground, is undermined by this vertical division between them and also by the suggestion of a doorway and a window with blue sky behind the woman. These are perhaps very personal references but they also make a broader commentary on human relationships and communication. The final chapter of Johnson's autobiographical memoir, The Other Side of Six records that 'in the winter of 1980 I fell ill', and it is possible that the apparent self-reflection of this work stems from the impact of the time Johnson spent in hospital and the recovery afterwards, 'humbled and prepared to listen'. (1) It was also a period of renewed professional success and recognition for Johnson, during which he held regular solo exhibitions with the Tom Caldwell Gallery, where The Bond was exhibited in 1982. 1/ Nevill Johnson, The Other Side of Six, Academy Press, Dublin, 1984 Dickon Hall, March 2020

Nevill Johnson RHA RUA (1911-1999) The Wall

            Est: €5,000 - €7,000

Nevill Johnson RHA RUA (1911-1999) The Wall oil on canvas signed with monogram lower right and titled verso h:41  w:51 cm. Provenance: Private Collection Probably painted in the mid-1940s, The Wall demonstrates a number of qualities that often define Nevill Johnson's painting from this period. The exemplary draughtsmanship and highly-finished paint surface recall his friendship with John Luke, alongside whom he often painted in the 1930s, while the sense of detachment, mystery and ambiguity is a characteristic of much of Johnson's early surrealist painting. The human presence is often implied through certain objects and the narrative around them, rather than actually shown. It is tempting to think that The Wall is a response to Belfast, where Johnson arrived in 1934 and where he lived at various times before moving to Dublin in 1946. Another painting of this period, Belfast, creates a repeated flat abstract pattern from the orderly red brick terraces of the city; he recalled in his autobiography (The Other Side of Six, University Press of Ireland, 1984) the 'pew-brown paint on those Presbyterian façades'. In the present painting, the red brick wall cuts at a slight angle across the lower third of the canvas, with a tall factory chimney behind continuing the verticals established between bricks and suggesting the industry that dominated the city. In contrast to this abstraction and austerity are the muted and delicate signs of life expressed by the butterfly and the dried-out growth in little mounds of earth on top of the wall and between bricks. While Johnson seems to suggest that the rigid, industrial city stifles the individual and the renewal of the natural world, the butterfly remains a symbol of hope and freedom. Emily Genauer, an American art critic who won the 1974 Pulitzer Prize for Criticism, wrote some lines on another Johnson painting of this period, The Balloon, which also seem appropriate to The Wall. 'No one but a poet…would have seen in such prosaic shapes the symbols of soaring aspiration and dream. And no one but a sensitive and gifted artist would have been able to communicate a romantic, metaphysical concept through shapes that are as precisely balanced and as austere and uncompromising as a calculated geometrical abstraction.' Dickon Hall, September 2019

Nevill Johnson RHA RUA (1911-1999) No Vile Men (1956) oil on board signed lower centre left h:37  w:71.75 cm. Provenance: Combridge Fine Art, Dublin (framing label verso); Collection of Professor Eoin O'Brien Exhibited: Irish Exhibition of Living Art 1956 (label verso); Literature: Nevill Johnson 'Paint the Smell of Grass' by Dickon Hall & Eoin O'Brien, Ava Gallery 2008; illustrated page 55 In this quasi-abstract painting-one of Johnson's best-the composition, based on a landscape, is dominated by an horizon of black hills, above which hover grey clouds. The landscape itself, a bleak monochrome expanse, appears to contain fragmentary remains of buildings but is otherwise uninhabited: this might well be a vision of the world after a nuclear war. In 1956, the year this painting was exhibited at the Irish Exhibition of Living Art, the Cold War was at its height; in October the Hungarian revolt against Soviet rule was crushed while in the Middle East, the Suez Crisis dominated the headlines. Nuclear annihilation was an ever-present threat, and Johnson captures the spirit of the times in this painting, with its expressive title No Vile Men. The origins of the title are not clear; but the phrase reflects Johnson's humanist philosophy, and his bleak view of the world's political leaders. Born in Buxton, Derbyshire in 1911, Nevill Johnson was a significant figure in Ireland's art world in the mid-twentieth century. Best known for quasi-abstract still-lives, interiors and landscapes, he was also a talented photographer. After attending Sedbergh School, Johnson went to work for the Ferodo motor parts company, and was soon afterwards transferred to their Belfast office, where he took up painting part-time, and became friends with the writers John Hewitt and Louis MacNeice. Influenced by the painter John Luke, Johnson initially produced tempera works that reflected his increasingly Existential world view. In 1936, he and Luke travelled to Paris, where they saw works by Picasso, Yves Tanguy and Salvador Dali, the latter becoming a significant influence on Johnson, who, after his return to Belfast, produced a series of Surrealist paintings. Johnson travelled regularly to the Republic of Ireland, and in 1947 had his first exhibition at the Waddington Gallery in Dublin, followed by a second successful show three years later. In 1951, his Crucifixion was included in a touring exhibition presented at the Rhode Island School of Design. By then Johnson was living full-time in Dublin, and he remained there for much of that decade, exhibiting at the Irish Exhibition of Living Art, and taking black and white photographs of street scenes that were later published in the book Dublin: A People's City. Along with George Campbell, Daniel O'Neill and Gerard Dillon, he was included in a Waddington exhibition Four Ulster Painters, that toured to London. He also had a solo show in Washington DC in 1957 and around that time decided to move to London, where he shared a flat in Notting Hill with artists Robert Colquhoun and Robert MacBryde. A restless and self-critical spirit, Johnson was dissatisfied with his own art and although he destroyed many of his paintings during this time, he continued to show with the IELA. In 1970, during which time he was exploring print-making and collage, he had his first solo show in many years, at the Collectors Gallery in Notting Hill. Eight years later, an exhibition of his work was held in Dublin, at the Tom Caldwell Gallery. His autobiography The Other Side of Six, was published in 1983 and documents his experimenting with different art styles and media; his earlier Surrealist paintings giving way to more Cubist-inspired work. No Vile Men reveals the influence of artists such as Paul Nash and Ben Nicholson, but is also a highly-personal work,

Provenance: Solomon Gallery, Dublin (label verso); Collection of Senator and Professor Trevor West of Trinity College and Charleston, Ballinacurra, Cork; By descent Neville Johnson was one of a number of progressive artists in Ireland championed by the art dealer Victor Waddington in his Dublin gallery from the late 1940s. While many of the others are still household names, it was Johnson's fate to be recurrently forgotten and rediscovered. A thoughtful, cerebral person, his earlier work showed a fine grasp of Italian metaphysical surrealism, and he went on to explore a succession of related modern styles with great skill. He is also known for his street photographs of Dublin in the early 1950s. His Enigma paintings see him look back on his own earlier works in a spirit that recalls the Analytical phase of Cubism.
