Harvey Joiner oil painting on canvas- Louisville, Kentucky

      Est: -

Harvey Joiner oil painting on canvas- Louisville, Kentucky Oil on stretched canvas of a late autumn landscape signed to viewer's lower right "Harvey Joiner". Depicted is an opening in a stand of beech trees aligned with pools of standing rain water. Painted in his earlier Barbizon style. Very good condition with finely spaced craquelure near either vertical edge housed in the original frame also well preserved. See enlarged images of craquelure confined to either vertical edge. Not discernible with my corrected vision at 5' away. Central area unaffected. There is in-paint at top edge of canvas where frame meets painting. This area extends downward less than 1/2" beginning to viewer's right extending over half way across the canvas. The worst of which can be observed in a black light image. There are three specks of in-paint else where that total combined area constitutes less space than a pencil eraser. Canvas unlined without puncture. Probably painted in or near Louisville, Ky. later in the 19th century. 19" x 26 ¼" framed to 26 ½" x 33 ¼".

HARVEY JOINER SUNLIT WOODS OIL ON BOARD

      Est: -

Harvey Joiner (1852 - 1932) Sunlit Woods Oil on Board. This stunning original oil painting depicts a beautiful Kentucky landscape scene with sunlight breaking through a grove of trees onto a flat expanse of grass with low mountain or hills in the distant background. Artist hand signed on lower right. Like his contemporary Alexander Drysdale of New Orleans, Kentucky artist Harvey Joiner created an extraordinary body of work based upon a simple compositional format. first, the great sense of depth and perspective experienced when standing at the edge of a forest and looking down a line of adjacent trees seemingly placed in random order, and secondly, the subliminal suggestion of transcendental elevation that viewing experience conveys to the viewer’s consciousness. To achieve this, Joiner placed rows of towering beech trees—leaning towards each other across a narrow gap in the forest—in a consistent pattern, diminishing the size of the tree from foreground to rear ground as a means of enhancing the illusion of space and depth. To elevate the viewing experience to a transcendental level, he deployed a lateral light to pierce the space between the trees, imbuing them with a sense of motion. Harvey Joiner oil on 9 1/2" x 7" sheet metal panel. Purchased unframed with scattered paint loss from the estate of Jane Vance (former poet laurate for Ky.) . Terry Boyle of CAG in Cincinnati resurrected this work which is now stable. The top third of the work with more in-paint by Terry than Harvey. He achieved an excellent outcome considering the before condition. The signature that of Harvey Joiner. I cannot detect in-paint without black light inspection. Probably painted at Louisville, Ky. Framed to 18" x 15" in a period gold leaf shadow box frame. Circa 1910.

Harvey Joiner 9 1/2" x 19 1/4" oil on artist board. Signed "Harvey Joiner 91" to viewers lower left. This oil executed prior to Joiner’s prolific era within the first quarter of the 20th century when he built up glazes painting in a luministic style. The scene, maybe a Coastal Carolina landscape. Excellent original condition for the work and frame. Framed to 16“ x 25 1/2“ in what is almost certainly the period gold leaf reticulated frame.

Untitled (Landscape), 1881 oil on canvas signed Harvey Joiner and dated (lower right) signed and dated on verso of canvas 38 1/8 x 50 1/4 inches. This is a very unusual painting by the artist, known for his beech forest scenes using the same compositional formula with an emphasis on depth and perspective. Dated 1881, this landscape was produced right around the time that Joiner settled for good in Louisville and perfected the formula for the wooded scenes that would become his trademark, after a period of itinerance that took him to the Saint Louis and Pittsburgh areas, Illinois and Southern Indiana during the 1870s.
