            Dec. 14, 2023

Louis Jonas Silvered Metal Sculpture of Caribou

            Est: $1,200 - $1,800

Louis Paul Jonas (American, born in Budapest, 1894-1971). Silvered metal sculpture of a caribou, 1931. Signed and dated 1931 on the integral base. A wonderful sculpture of a caribou with fabulous antlers, skillfully modeled in silvered metal by Louis Paul Jonas. Caribou are unusual in that they shed and regrow their antlers every year. Remarkably, it only takes weeks for bull caribou to grow antlers which can be quite sizeable, weighing up to 20 pounds and measuring more than one meter long! This sculpture demonstrates Louis Paul Jonas immense admiration and connection to wild life. In addition to capturing the naturalistic form of the animal, Jonas had a remarkable ability to delineate various textures to further imbue the sculpture with life. Size: 11.75" L x 4" W x 9.75" H (29.8 cm x 10.2 cm x 24.8 cm) About the artist: "Louis Paul Jonas attended art school in Budapest before coming to the United States at the age of 14. Upon his arrival, he began work at his brother's taxidermy studio in Denver, Colorado. There, he was able to study the anatomy of many different animals. Jonas then moved to New York City, where he studied with the internationally known naturalist, animal sculptor, and taxidermist Carl Akeley (1864-1926). Like Akeley, Jonas favored African wildlife, and together they created the famous African Elephant Group that remains on exhibit in Akeley Hall at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. After service in World War I, Jonas returned to the Natural History Museum, where he worked on installations in the Hall of Asian Mammals. At this time, his sculptures began to be exhibited at the National Academy of Design. In 1930, Jonas completed Commemorating the Grizzly Bear, a mother bear protecting her cub, for the Denver Municipal Park, which shows the influence of the Art Deco movement. Eventually, Jonas abandoned taxidermy to concentrate on sculpture and, in 1939, opened a studio in Mahopac, New York. Jonas may be one of the lesser-known American animal sculptors, but he was no less significant. During his career, he was commissioned to create many life-size sculptures including the Grizzly Bear and Cubs at the Denver Museum of Natural History, nine Dinosaurs for the Sinclair Oil Company exhibit at the 1964 New York World's Fair, and a Rhinoceros for the Davenport Public Museum in Iowa, as well as a dog for fellow sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington. Jonas was also a member of the American Association of Museums and the New York Zoological Society." Est: $2,000 - $4,000

LOUIS-PAUL JONAS (HUNGARIAN-AMERICAN, 1897-1971) ANDIRONS American, second quarter 20th century, cast iron. Art Deco influence, footed bases with giraffes facing inward. The pair is illustrated in the Jonas Brothers Studios of New York pamphlet circa 1940. About the Artist: Louis Paul Jonas (July 17, 1894 – February 16, 1971) was an American sculptor of wildlife, taxidermist, and natural history exhibit designer. Born in Budapest, Hungary, Jonas moved to the United States at the age of 12 and went to work at his brothers' taxidermy studio, Jonas Brothers, in Denver, Co. Later he moved to New York City, where he studied under Carl Akeley, a noted field naturalist, taxidermist, and animal sculptor. There, they created the African elephant group in the center of Akeley Hall at the American Museum of Natural History, in New York. Jonas opened Louis Paul Jonas Studios, Inc in Mahopac, NY, and eventually moved to Hudson, NY. The studio was known for its miniature and full size animal sculptures, taxidermy, and natural history exhibits featured in over 50 museums worldwide. In 1932, Louis Paul Jonas and his brothers created the taxidermy model of the famous Australian race horse Phar Lap that is now on display at the Melbourne Museum. The company created the first full sized dinosaur sculptures for the 1964 New York World's Fair in the "Dinoland" area, which was sponsored by the Sinclair Oil Corporation. Jonas consulted with noted paleontologists Barnum Brown, Edwin H. Colbert and John Ostrom in order to create sculptures that were as accurate as possible. After the Fair closed, the dinosaur models toured the country on special flatbed trailers as part of a company advertising campaign. Many of the statues are now on display at various museums and parks. In 1983, the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. hosted an exhibition of 75 wildlife miniatures created by Jonas.
