ADRIAN JONES (BRITISH, 1845-1938) : A BRONZE MODEL OF EPSOM DERBY WINNER ‘PERSIMMON’ ADRIAN JONES (BRITISH, 1845-1938) : A BRONZE MODEL OF EPSOM DERBY WINNER ‘PERSIMMON’, the bronze model of the standing race horse entitled PERSIMMON to the front of the rectangular plinth base, signed 'Adrian Jones', the horse 31cm high x 35.5cm wide, including plinth, 32,5cm high Provenance: Private collection Notes: Adrian Jones is most famous for his massive bronze equestrian group 'Peace descending on the Quadriga of War', on top of the Wellington Arch at Hyde Park Corner in London. Attached is an image of the sculptor and two of his assistants taking tea inside the huge plaster mould for one of the horses, which give a very real view of just how large these sculptures were and how difficult to cast in bronze. His other public works include an equestrian statue of Prince George, Duke of Cambridge at Whitehall, and the Royal Marines National Memorial at St James's Park, London. His works do not often come up for sale and this sculpture, probably a maquette for a bronze that was either never cast or since lost, represents a rare opportunity to purchase a relatively inexpensive work by this renowned and respected British sculptor. Persimmon was a British Thoroughbred race horse and sire. Persimmon, an exceptionally good-looking but highly strung bay horse was bred by his owner, the Prince of Wales. He was trained throughout his career by Richard Marsh at his Egerton House stable at Newmarket, Suffolk. In a racing career that lasted from June 1895 to July 1897 he ran nine times and won seven races. His victories included the 1896 Epsom Derby, one of the first horse races ever filmed, by Robert W. Paul.

Adrian Jones (1845-1938) Adrian Jones (1845-1938) Persimmon crossing the line, jockey wearing the colours of Edward VII when Prince of Wales signed and dated 1897, oil on board 15 x 27cm In 1896 Persimmon, out of Perdita II by St Simon, won the Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket, the Derby and the St Leger in 1896 for the Prince of Wales, going on to win the Eclipse and the Ascot Gold Cup in 1897 when this painting was executed. Considered a particularly striking horse, Persimmon was filmed winning the Derby which is regarded as one of the earliest films of a horse race. There is a large oil in the Royal Collection of Persimmon with Jack Watts up, in a paddock. Adrian Jones was commissioned to make several paintings of the horse with Watts up and went on to make a bronze of the horse as a birthday gift for the prince. It is possible that the present picture celebrates one of Persimmon's victories in 1897.

        Adrian Jones - Persimmon

        Est: $3,000 - $4,000

Adrian Jones (British, 1845–1938) PERSIMMON $3,000. – $4,000. Oil on canvas, 20” x 24” Signed, inscribed $3,000. – 4,000. Bred by the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, Persimmon was a bay son of St. Simon (lot 27) foaled in 1893. Over the course of his career, Persimmon ran nine times and won seven. St. Frusquin, another son of St. Simon, inflicted his only two defeats. He won the Epsom Derby in 1895, which was the first horse race ever filmed. As a stallion, Persimmon sired horses such as Sceptre, a filly who won four English classic races in 1902; Comedy King (lot 31), who was a successful racehorse and stallion in Australia; and Prince Palatine, who won the Ascot Gold Cup in 1912 and 1913 and went on to be the great grandsire of Princequillo (lot 35). Persimmon was leading sire four times and leading broodmare sire three times. His career was cut short at the age of 15 when he broke his pelvis. His stuffed and mounted head is on display at the National Horseracing Museum at Newmarket. A London and North Eastern Railway class A1 locomotive was named for Persimmon in 1925 and operated until 1963. A life- sized statue of the champion resides at the Royal Stud in the Sandringham estate.
