Monogrammed and titled in pencil as well as numbered in an unknown hand in pencil on the verso. It was thanks to a happy accident that the works of the amateur photographer Charles Jones have survived. Jones worked as a gardener at a mansion in Sussex in the late 19th century, and when his photographic works were discovered in a suitcase at a London antiques market in 1981, it included images of vegetables, fruit and plants. Little is known about the artist, whose unusual shots are considered forerunners to the works of Karl Blossfeldt (lot 9) or Albert Renger-Patzsch (lot 24) due to their sober and precise style, but it was for these qualities that his works soon found their way onto the art market. Jones arranged his motifs carefully before a neutral background, and photographed them in close up with long exposures. He took just as much care with his gold tinted prints, all of which were monogrammed (and occasionally signed with his full name), suggesting a certain artistic confidence. The negatives are thought to be lost. The gardener Jones, whose images speak for his dedication to his subject, apparently used the glass plates to protect his seedlings.
