DAVID JONES C.H., C.B.E. (BRITISH 1895-1974) SUMMER'S DAY, 1925 signed and dated in pencil (lower left), pencil and watercolour on paper 37cm x 52cm (14 ½in x 20 ½in) The Redfern Gallery, London, 1950;Private Collection, U.K. David Jones is regarded as one of the most significant modernist writers of his generation. He served with the Royal Welch Fusiliers on the Frontline between 1915-1918 and his magnum opus, In Parenthesis - regarded by peers including T. S. Eliot and W. H. Auden as a masterpiece - is now recognised as one of the most important texts inspired by the First World War. Jones, however, primarily regarded himself as an artist. Having studied at Camberwell Art School and the Westminster School of Art, he became an active participant in exhibition societies including the Seven and Five Group alongside the likes of Ben and Winifred Nicholson, Ivon Hitchens and Frances Hodgkins. Jones’s work is largely figurative in technique, and the chosen medium of watercolour a symbolic decision on the artist’s part, being fluid, mutable and evocative of a long English tradition, from contemporaries including Bawden through Blake and reaching back to medieval illuminations. His works evoke a sense of gentle poetry and depth of meaning. Complex in their apparent simplicity, his oeuvre is perhaps best described in the artist’s own words from 1935:“I should like to speak of a quality which I rather associate with the folk tales of Wales or Celtic derivation, a quality congenial and significant to me which in some oblique way has some connection with what I want to do in painting. I find it impossible to define, but it has to do with a certain affection for the intimate creatureliness of things – a care for, and appreciation of the particular genius of places, men, trees, animals, and yet withal a pervading sense of metamorphosis and mutability.”

              David Jones,

              Est: £10,000 - £15,000

David Jones,  British 1895-1974 -  The Little Wood, c.1940;  watercolour and pencil on paper, signed lower right 'David Jones', 47.8 x 60 cm (ARR)  Provenance:  The Redfern Gallery, London (partial label attached to the reverse of the frame);  Dr. Stella Churchill, purchased on the 12th January 1940 (according to the label attached to the reverse of the frame);  the Descendants of Sidney and Stella Churchill (1862-1921 and 1883-1954) and Ruth Plant (1912-1988)  Exhibited:  The Redfern Gallery, London, 'Watercolours by David Jones', 4th January - 27th January 1940, cat. no.14  Note:  the present work was purchased from the exhibition 'Watercolours by David Jones' at the Redfern Gallery, 4th -27th January 1940 and Stella Churchill also owned other works by Jones, 'Cattle' and 'Kitchen, Table and Window'. This was an important exhibition for the artist, following a period of psychological turmoil in the 1930s, but it was successfully received with the Tate Gallery purchasing 'The Chapel in the Park' for its collection. There were also highly positive reviews with The Times calling him 'one of the most original of contemporary English artists'.  The present work has the same painterly approach as 'The Chapel in the Park' to the use of watercolour, Jones carefully building up the forest scene in glazes of warm greens, blues and reds. Jones uses the translucence of the medium to evoke a sense of ethereality and his spiritual  wonder at the woodland landscape. Jones has developed the faux-naïve style of artists such as Ben and Winifred Nicholson and Christopher Wood in the 1930s, to create a unique sense of joy that permeates his view of the British landscape.  Jones is now considered one of the most important figures in British 20th century cultural history, celebrated as much for his painting as for his epic poems, 'In Parenthesis, 1937', based on his experiences during the First World War and 'The Anathemata, 1952'. Much like his paintings, these combine a modernist technique with a focus on religion and British myth and folklore. His works were acclaimed by figures including T. S. Eliot and W. H. Auden.

He was a true polymath, integrating his various artistic pursuits into a singular and distinctive style that defied categorisation. In 1909, at the age of fourteen, Jones entered the Camberwell School of Art, however at the outbreak of the First World War he enlisted in the London Welsh Battalion of the Royal Welch Fusiliers and spent 1915 to 1918 fighting at the front in France and seeing action at Ypres in the Battle of Passchendaele. The horrors and traumas of war profoundly influenced his work, and themes of sacrifice, mortality, and spirituality became central to his artistic expression. His deep Catholic faith, nurtured from an early age, also played a significant role in shaping his artistic vision. In January 1921, Jones joined the Ditchling Guild of St Joseph and St Dominic, founded in 1919 by Hilary Pepler and Eric Gill as a religious fraternity for craftsmen. It was here that he learnt wood engraving and during the winter of 1924 he spent Christmas with Gill at the monastery at Capel-y-ffin, Abergavenny. Rediscovering his Welsh roots, Jones spent most of the next three years painting the rugged landscape of the Black Mountains. Dr Paul Hills comments on his work of this period: The move from the relaxed, ample curves of the Sussex Downs...to the irregular inflexions of the Welsh hills and coast, effected a release from the borrowed idiom in which he had been working. In an autobiographical talk he told how he discovered, between 1924 and 1926, a fruitful direction for his work, particularly under `the impact of the strong hill-rhythms and the bright counter-rhythms of the afonydd dyfroedd (water-brooks)'. (Exhibition catalogue, David Jones, Tate Gallery, London, 1981, p.24) As a painter, Jones excelled in capturing the essence of landscapes, often infusing them with a sense of mystical beauty and symbolism. His works exhibited a meticulous attention to detail and a mastery of techniques, blending elements of traditionalism with modernist influences. Whether depicting natural scenes, religious imagery, or historical events, his paintings possessed an ethereal quality that is as relevant and contemporary today as it was when painted.

Jones developed the theme of the Crucifixion in the 1920s in all his favoured media, including as a woodcut, in pencil and crayon, in watercolour and as a free standing wood carving. Of all these iterations, the present example appears to be one of the largest. The last comparable work to be offered at auction was in the David Bowie sale at Sotheby's on 11th November 2016, lot 101, which sold for £93,750. Described by Kenneth Clark as 'a remarkable genius', as a writer Jones was praised by both T.S. Eliot and W.H. Auden, in particular for his epic modernist poem In Parenthesis. Started in 1928 and published ten years later, his verse captures his harrowing time in the trenches in the the First World War. It was an experience that affected his work, especially in the decade that followed, and inspired his strong Christian faith. Another deep rooted source of inspiration was his strong Welsh heritage. Already, when in his 'teens at Camberwell School of Art he was committed to becoming an illustrator of Welsh history. After the War Jones studied at Westminster School of Art under Bernard Meninsky (see lot 41). He converted to Catholicism in 1921 and moved out of London to Ditchling to join Eric Gill and his family in Sussex. There he learnt wood engraving and became postulant in the Guild of St Joseph and St Dominic, the community founded by Gill dedicated to work, faith and domestic life. When Gill left the Guild in 1924 to move with some of the community to a former monastery at Capel-y-ffin north of Abergavenny in Wales Jones followed, spending the next few years working in the Black Mountains and at the Benedictine Monastery on Caldy island, off the Pembrokshire coast. Jones was naturally drawn to working on paper, finding pencil and watercolour far more sympathetic to his purpose than oil paint. His sensitivity to his media is especially acute in the present work. Describing the drawing technique that characterised Jones' work during the 1920s, Paul Hills comments: 'The individual marks of pencil and brush share a distinctive character, irregular yet rhythmic, tremulous yet bold. He has rediscovered the handwriting of sharp jabs... which will become the unmistakable signature of his visual art. Individually these marks may appear graceless, undisciplined, even messy; yet at the right distance they signal across the paper in vibrant patterns. The matrix of white paper is crucial to this essential linear art; the character of each touch must tell.' (exh. cat. David Jones, 1981, p. 25). Throughout his life his deeply held religious conviction determined much of what he drew and painted; there was invariably a spiritual element underlying even the most anodyne subject. Biblical themes that he drew on for inspiration ranged from the Madonna and Child to the Mocking of Jesus and the Paschal Lamb as well as the present theme. But in each he reflected his own very personal, often folkloric and typically Welsh character. As Gill said of Jones' aesthetic: 'What concerns him is the universal thing showing through the particular thing... The eye sees particular things, but the man's delight in the physical vision is checked by the mind's apprehension informing it' (exh. cat. David Jones, 1981, p. 19). In the Agenda special issue of 1967 dedicated to David Jones' work published by William Cookson, it was noted that the present work is an 'Unfinished study for the proposed work illustrating the Oblation and Immolation of the Cross and of the Altar in a Welsh hill-setting'. In the catalogue accompanying the 1981 Tate Gallery retrospective on David Jones, curator Paul Hills comments that the drawing is 'one of Jones's first statements of the inseparable nature of the Crucifixion and the Eucharist', a theme later taken up in his poem The Fatigue.' (exh. cat. David Jones, 1981, p. 91). ARR may apply
