Joe (Joseph John) Jones (1909-1963) 'Roustabout' Laborers Circa 1934 The evocative composition of African American laborers handling cargo along a waterfront is signed lower right front in black pigment. The subjects and composition of this work are closely related to a major painting by Joe Jones titled Roustabouts, now in the collection of the Worcester Art Museum. The Cleveland Museum of Art, the Denver Art Museum, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the National Gallery of Art, the Saint Louis Art Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art all hold paintings by Joe Jones in their collections. Joe Joseph John Jones was a prolific painter, lithographer and WPA muralist. His strong left leaning sensibilities motivated his focus on the American Scene and Social Realism in his paintings. He sought to document the struggles of workers, particularly African American workers, and to portray and protest the racism they endured. He did so with in various ways. For instance, in the painting Roustabouts a rotund white man wearing a Panama hat looks down on a number of defeated looking workers. Every black man in the composition has their head down, including those in motion who strain against the weight of the cargo they're charged with moving, highlighting the inequity of the times. Throughout history, particularly in the 1930s, the terms 'roustabout' and 'roughneck' where used as a label for unskilled workers who performed general labor, such as loading and unloading cargo. Board measures 9 x 10 with a framed size of 13.75 x 15.25 inches. A beautiful portrait of two women by Joe Jones, a self-taught artist who was known for his Social Realist and American Regionalist works as well as his Works Progress Administration (WPA) murals. Jones depicted both women in bust-length poses, looking toward one another, as if engaged in a meaningful conversation. The figures as well as the background are rendered with lyrical lines and impressionistic washes of watercolor and gouache, in a colorful rainbow-like palette. A lovely double portrait mounted in a custom double matte and gold-toned frame. Size (sight view): 10.625" L x 13.5" W (27 cm x 34.3 cm) Size (frame): 24.25" L x 27" W (61.6 cm x 68.6 cm) Artist Biography: "Born in St. Louis, Missouri, April 7, 1909, and died in Morristown, New Jersey, 1963, Joe Jones was a painter and lithographer. Self taught, he quit school at age fifteen to work as a house painter. Winning his first award in 1931, Jones gained the attention of St. Louis patrons who financed his travel to the artists' colony in Provincetown, Massachusetts. He began winning awards at age 22 in 1931 with his early paintings that are typical Midwestern Regionalist works depicting wheat fields and wheat farming. A political activist as well as a painter, Jones organized art classes for unemployed youngsters, which he held in the old St. Louis courthouse in 1934. He alienated his supporters with the pronouncement that he had joined the Communist Party, so Jones signed up for the Public Works of Art Project in 1934. He left St. Louis in 1935 to pursue his art career in New York. In 1937, he was awarded a prestigious Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship to create a pictorial record of conditions in the dust bowl. That same year, his work was included in a major 119 exhibition at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, PA. Through the period of the WPA Jones was awarded five major mural commissions. Here Jones depicts two young male farmers wearing straw hats, overalls and farm boots as they stand in a wheat field tying up bags of wheat that will then be ready to take to market. Because this work was made during the Great Depression, Jones' depiction of wheat is significant. His wheat of course signifies bread and food more broadly—it therefore stands for survival and for life itself across America in the 1930s. Jones was aware of the poignancy of his subject matter and dedicated much time and effort to his depictions of wheat and the farmers who dedicated their lives to growing it for the rest of the nation. Jones painted wheat as subject matter in at least 5 major WPA federal murals in Kansas, Arkansas and Missouri; and his first important painting shown in New York was entitled "Painting of Wheatfields." Jones brought the intensity of poverty and famine he witnessed in the Midwest to a national audience with this lithograph and with all of his work about the importance of grain. Because this work came out of the Great Depression of the 1930s, perhaps the subject is sleeping in broad daylight here because she is out of work and out of luck in life. Here Jones created an aerial and whimsical rendition of one (of the matching pair) of elaborate limestone gatehouses with red tiled roofs (designed by Eames & Young) joined by an elevated ornamental wrought iron arch at the Kingshighway entrance to Westmoreland Place (right across from Straub's), one of the finest private neighborhoods in the City of St. Louis. He worked on this piece while looking down at the gatehouses from a newly-built upper-level apartment at the Park Plaza Hotel (built in Art Deco style in 1929, now part of the Chase Park Plaza Hotel complex). Instead of depicting any of the grandiose architectural elements of the homes of this neighborhood, Jones instead took delight in the form of the gatehouse roof, in the lines and curves of the street itself and of its sidewalk as well as in the shapes of the bushes and trees growing on this corner lot—and all while only hinting at the corner of the foundation of the 9-bedroom 15,000 sq. ft. mansion built in 1896 at #1 Westmoreland Place. Published by Associated American Artists, New York. 1938. A very good impression. Jones was born in St. Louis, Missouri. Self-taught, he quit school at age fifteen to work as a house painter, his father's profession. In 1933, ten patrons led by Elizabeth Green in St. Louis formed a "Joe Jones Club" and financed his travel to the artists' colony in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where he furthered his artistic training. In August 1935, Jones painted a mural series at the Commonwealth College at Mena, Arkansas. He painted a New Deal mural for the post office in Charleston, Missouri, titled Harvest in 1938. This mural was done at the height of Jones' fame and is a classic subject for the artist. It depicts the harvest of wheat in a very labor-intensive manner showing the cutting, gathering, and stacking of it onto a wagon. Under a cloudy dark sky, wheat dominates the perspective with the farmers providing a great deal of motion. Another New Deal mural entitled Men and Wheat was painted by Jones in 1940, followed by Husking Corn in 1941 for the Dexter, Missouri, post office, Turning a Corner in 1939 in Anthony, Kansas and Threshing in Magnolia, Arkansas, in 1938. All the murals depicted some process during a wheat harvest.

He left St. Louis in 1935 to pursue his art career in New York. In 1937, he was awarded a prestigious Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship to create a pictorial record of conditions in the dust bowl. That same year, his work was included in a major 119 exhibition at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, PA. Through the period of the WPA Jones was awarded five major mural commissions. As a result, he created murals for the post offices at Seneca, Kansas, Men and Wheat (1940); Anthony, Kansas, Turning a Corner (1939); Hutchinson, Kansas; Magnolia, Arkansas; and Charleston, Missouri. During World War II he worked as a war artist for Life magazine. Because Jones addressed major political and social issues in so many of his paintings, he is typically cited as a Social Realist as well as a Regionalist. His style changed in the late 1940s to minimal and non-representational. He also worked as an instructor at St. Bernards School for Boys, Ralston, NJ."
