(French 1739-1812, 1740-1797) John Paul Jones, Commodore a Service des Etats-Unis de l’Amérique (Cresswell 133b), Paris, circa 1780s, plate 7-5/8 x 4-15/16 in.; unframed Provenance: Private New England Collection Note: The French text underneath Jones is a description of the infamous naval duel between Jones’ USS Bonhomme Richard and the British HMS Serapis at the Battle of Flamborough Head, as well as an account of Jones’ personal character. It was in this battle that Jones is said to have retorted “I have not yet begun to fight!’ upon being asked for his surrender. This is part of a series of portraits of American revolutionary officers, published in Paris during the 1770s by partners Jacques Esnault (1739-1812, also written Esnauts) and Michel Rapilly (1740-1797?), whose shop was located at no. 259 rue Saint Jacques. Each portrait uses the same cartouche with a shield, cannon, and banner, some laterally reversed.  Reference: Cresswell, D. (n.d.). Dated January 19th, 1780. Unsigned. Three page French naval intelligence bulletin. Various subjects including a mention of one Paul Jones. Translation appears to read: Mr. de Bougainville has written to the Minister saying that he is retiring from service because he believes he has experienced an injustice. Everything is in place for us to have a Camp of 20 to 30,000 men between Brest and Landocaseau. The brave M. de Courdie did not Louy long - from his glory he died on the 9th. By a decision of the council of 9 this month, the number of 60 general farmers, 27 deputies, and 25 managers, was reduced to 40 for the first company, 25 for service despite the meeting of helpers, and 25 for the 3rd zeunis rights, by means of this reduction, and of an increase of finances, on the places that samaj has preserved, it finds deguoy reclaimed the supreme Places and gains in addition 14 million on the new Baih. The conduct of Admiral Dylan, who appeared suspicious, was generally applauded, since by his clever maneuver, he set Paul Jones, and all the buildings destined for France, in such a way that the English ... made a free insult to Dutch flag. It appears two ordinances of the Kings ... concerning the rules which will be observed for the military grades of the Department of the Colonies. The service of the officers will be counted from the time of 15 years served. The Cross of St. Louis will only be awarded to a Captain after 24 years of service, to a major after 22, to a Lieutenant Colonel after 20, and to a Colonel after 18. Les Blesseures and declared actions will be excluded. Officers of fortune will not be able to obtain the Cross of St. Louis, if they are not from the same Lieutenants. After 10 years of service as an officer in the employ of the colonies, and which is not because in the year and day, will lose their places for legitimate reasons. By the 2nd, S.M. established at the Isle of Rh a company of gentlemen cadets, 15 from the 1st, and 15 from the 2nd, destined for the colonies under the inspection of the Count of Genlois. The officers will be in all times drawn indiscriminately from all the King's troops. We speak of a Council that has been set up to govern the Naval department, to which M. Borvilliers said we refused one of the places. It is added that M. de St. Germain, by sacrificing his power, .... by establishing one similarto the department of War, if it had been adopted. The Compte d'Estaing went to the Bal de La Reyne, which made him carry a chair to sit near her. The King and the Prince went to surround him and we were received. M. de Sade arrived at Brest with his squadron and the Marines he was convoying. Framed H. 41.5" x W. 17.5".

Charlotte Bergman, who died in Jerusalem on July 17 2003, one month before her 99th birthday, was unique among the museum's benefactors. She lived on the premises of the Israel Museum for three decades, and died there. When she made aliyah from New York to Israel in the 60's, the Belgian-born Bergman brought her collection of modern art with her and helped Jerusalem ex-mayor Teddy Kollek found the museum. As the childless widow of an English architect, she promised to bequeath her paintings, sculptures and ceramics by such 20th century masters as Marc Chagall, Raoul Dufy, Henry Moore and Pablo Picasso to the museum. In return, she asked to build a home within the campus, sharing its security. She wouldn't have to put her treasures in a vault. She could live with them and savor them with her friends. After her death the museum plans to keep the white, single-story house and its 200 art works intact. Although he would not put a figure on it, they are believed to be worth many millions of dollars. They include a portrait in oils of a young Charlotte Bergman by Dufy, a personal friend, and a set of small-format Henry Moore bronzes, among other works of Picasso, Braque and other great 20th century masters. Condition: Good condition, apart from a short tear (3mm) in the lower part. some minor creases and marks in the margins. Note: this work will be shipped from Israel
