      Nell Choate Jones (1879-1981) (American) “Flowers in a Vase ” oil on canvas 20” x 18” estate stamped verso signed on label verso, excellent condition. Born/lived: Hawkinsville, GA, Brooklyn, NY, England, France, and New Mexico. Known: Modernism was expressed in her work. She painted impressionist landscapes in Fontainebleau and Expressionist style paintings influenced by trips to Georgia. She painted for a time in Santa FE, NM where she lived with the Queries Indians, painting Pueblos and other Native American subjects. Many of her paintings from the mid-1930s are scenes in Georgia. She visited Bermuda on painting trips. Personally and in her art, Jones was responsive to the problems of women as artists and in society. Jones was an involved supporter of women in the arts. Studied: Adelphi Academy in Brooklyn, New York, Fontainebleau, France, and England Member: Swiss Int. Inst. of Arts and Letters (fellow); National Association of Women Artists (hon. life mem.; pres.; Woman of the Year); Brooklyn Society Artists (pres.); Brooklyn Society of Painting and Sculpture; Boston Art Club; League of American Pen Women; Studio Traveling Guild; Southern States Art League; President of the American Society of Contemporary Artists, NYC. Exhibited: Began to exhibit her work 1927. Worlds Fair New York, 1939; National Academy of Design; Allied Artists of America; Women’s Engineering Club; Adelphi College; Columbia; Argent Gallery; Brooklyn College; PIA School; Pen and Brush Club, NY (first prize and founders prize); ); National Association of Women Artists (medal of Honor, award); Lena Newcastle Watercolor prize; Brooklyn Museum; (in honor of her 100th birthday) Her work was included in a 1999 exhibition at the Georgia Museum of Art of the University of Georgia, Athens: Before 1948: American Paintings from Georgia Collections. Work: High Museum of Art, Atlanta, GA, Morris Museum of Art, Augusta, GA, Ft. Worth Museum. 1936, in Georgia, painted expressionist works of black men and women.
