No. 2: Two pages from a Sketch book, 1771. Lent by Mrs Evan-Thomas' QTY: (1) NOTE: Provenance: Mrs. Evan Thomas; Collection of Sir Lawrence Gowing (1918-1991). Exhibited: Marble Hill House, London, Thomas Jones (1742-1803), June - August 1970, number 2. An early, probably Welsh landscape study, and one of a small number of works from Jones' early years. In his journal, the artist lamented, following his return from Italy, that 'all the studies I had ever hitherto made either from different Masters or from Nature' had been damaged beyond recall with just a 'few sketches and papers... still legible'. Thomas Jones, a Welsh landscape artist, studied under Richard Wilson between 1763 and 1765, and was elected a fellow of the Society of Artists in 1772. Lawrence Gowing's 1985 Walter Neurath Memorial Lecture The Originality of Thomas Jones was published by Thames and Hudson in 1986.

    Große Landschaft mit dem „Castelluccio di Battipaglia“ Öl auf Leinwand. 112,5 x 150 cm. Schmale vergoldete Einfassungsleiste. Beigegeben eine Expertise von Dario Succi, Gorizia (o. J.), mit zahlreichen Vergleichen. Die Vedute ist als großes Schaubild angelegt. Aus einer Anhöhe wird der Blick über die weite Hügellandschaft der Provinz Salerno geführt, im Bildzentrum das tiefer liegende Kastell, genannt Castelluccio di Battipaglia. Die Mauern, mit Zinnen, Turmaufbau und Nebengebäuden, sowie die ebenfalls mit Zinnen bestückten Steinbrücke stehen im rötlichen Spätlicht. Ein Baum mit gewaltiger Laubkrone, der die rechte Bildhälfte beherrscht, und ein kleinerer mit gekrümmtem Stamm, links, schaffen eine Distanzbarriere zwischen Betrachter und zentralem Bildgegenstand. Der Vordergrund wird belebt durch bäuerliche Figurenstaffage mit Rindern, Schafen und Ziegen. Die Bewegtheit einiger störrischer Tiere steht bewusst im Gegensatz zur Ruhe der Landschaft und des bereits damals nicht mehr bewohnten Schlosses. Somit zeigt sich das Gemälde als ein Vorläufer der Ruinenromantik des Jahrhunderts. Jones wurde bereits von Federico Zeri als ein Maler erwähnt, der schon in der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts Italien bereist hatte, vor allem die Gegenden um Neapel. Als Schüler des Landschafters Richard Wilson zieht Jones nach Italien. Erst durch Vermittlung des britischen Botschafters und des Zeichenlehrers von Goethe, Philipp Hackert, kam er zu einigen Aufträgen. Doch 1783 trat er sein reiches Erbe mit einem Familiengut in England an und arbeitete fortan an Werken für Ausstellungen in der Royal Academy. Lange in Vergessenheit geraten, richtete sich das Interesse auf den Künstler erst nach Veröffentlichung von dessen Lebenserinnerungen 1954. A.R. Literatur: Vgl. (31.8 x 45.7 cm.) PROVENANCE Miss Merivale. L.G. Duke. LITERATURE T. Wilcox, Francis Towne, London, 1997, exhibition catalogue, p. 152, fig. 45, 'as whereabouts unknown'. EXHIBITION London, South London Picture Gallery, English Landscape, 1951, no. 55. NOTES This is the only known view by Towne of this particular location. It is recorded by Wilcox as 'whereabouts unknown', in 1997 and as dated '17 March 1781'. This is however not the case. It is indeed dated 31 March, the same date as a version by Towne's fellow traveller and artist Thomas Jones (1742-1802). Jones's version is from exactly the same spot and was executed for Canon J.H. Adams and is still in his family. Jones recorded in his diary for 2 June 1781: 'Here may visibly be traced the Scenery that Salvator Rosa formed himself upon - Only taking away the pine trees, which were, perhaps, planted since his time, and which indicate a State of Cultivation not suited to his gloomy mind, with the addition of Water & a few Banditti - And every hundred yards presents you with a new and perfect Compostion of that Master - When Towne was in Naples, I took him with me to see this romantick [ sic ] place, with which he seemed much delighted.' (T. Jones 'Memoirs of Thomas Jones', ed. by A.P. Opp‚, Walpole Society, vol. 32, 1946-8, published 1951, p. 104). Another version by Jones is illustrated here, fig. 1 (Manchester, Whitworth Art Gallery, Travels in Italy 1776-1783: Based on the Memoirs of Thomas Jones, 1988, no. 119). The dramatic use of shadow in this watercolour, with half the composition deep in shadow and the illuminated area basking in bright sunlight, is a major departure from convention, and something that Towne initiated. Such a device is usually absent from Jones's work but his two Santa Maria de Monti watercolours display a similar technique and thus show the influence Towne had upon him when they sketched together.
