Johan Barthold Jongkind Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Naval painter, Etcher, Lithographer, b. 1819 - d. 1891

Johan Barthold Jongkind (3 June 1819 – 9 February 1891) was a Dutch painter and printmaker. He painted marine landscapes in a free manner and is regarded as a forerunner of Impressionism.

Jongkind was born in the town of Lattrop in the Overijssel province of the Netherlands near the border with Germany. Trained at the art academy in The Hague under Andreas Schelfhout, in 1846 he moved to Montparnasse in Paris, France where he studied under Eugène Isabey and François-Édouard Picot. Two years later, the Paris Salon accepted his work for its exhibition, and he received acclaim from critic Charles Baudelaire and later on from Émile Zola. He was to experience little success, however, and he suffered bouts of depression complicated by alcoholism.[1]

Jongkind returned to live in Rotterdam in 1855, and remained there until 1860.[1] Back in Paris, in 1861 he rented a studio on the rue de Chevreuse in Montparnasse where some of his paintings began to show glimpses of the Impressionist style to come. In 1862 he met in Normandy, in the famous ferme Saint-Siméon in Honfleur, with some of his artist friends, such as Alfred Sisley, Eugène Boudin, and the young Claude Monet, to all of whom Jongkind served as a mentor. Monet later referred to him as "...a quiet man with such a talent that is beyond words"[citation needed] and credited the "definitive education" of his own eye to Jongkind.[2] In 1863 Jongkind exhibited at the first Salon des Refusés. He was invited to participate in the first exhibition of the Impressionist group in 1874, but he declined.[3]

In 1878, Jongkind and his companion Joséphine Fesser moved to live in the small town of La Côte-Saint-André near Grenoble in the Isère département in the southeast of France. He died in 1891 in Saint-Égrève, in the same département. He is buried in the cemetery of La Côte-Saint-André. A street is named after him in the neighborhood of streets named after 19th- and 20th-century Dutch painters in Overtoomse Veld-Noord, Amsterdam.

MONDLICHT ÜBER DEM KANAL IN DORDRECHT Öl auf Leinwand. 33 x 47 cm. Circle of JOHAN BARTHOLD JONGKIND (Lattrop, 1819-around Grenoble, 1891). "Sunset." Oil on panel. Measurements: 25,5 x 33,5 cm; 34 x 41,5 cm (frame). Painting of coastal theme portrayed in the magic hour of the sunset. The golden disk disappears behind the horizon line and says goodbye with an igneous symphony. On the shore, huts and precarious houses are outlined in front of the sea. The painting is inspired by the nocturnal seascapes of Johan Barthold Jongkind, resolved in pre-impressionist language. Johan Barthold Jongkind was a Dutch painter and engraver considered one of the forerunners of impressionism. He studied art at the School of The Hague under the tutelage of the romantic painter Andreas Schelfhout, and painted his first pictures in the style of traditional Flemish painting. In 1846 he settled in Paris and became a pupil of Eugène Isabey until, in 1855, he was forced to return to Holland because of economic problems and settled in Rotterdam. He returned to Paris in April 1860, and from then on expressed his attraction for the marines during his stays on the Norman coast in Le Havre, Sainte-Adresse (see watercolor), Honfleur and Trouville. There he met Boudin and above all Monet, who sincerely acknowledged his debt to the Dutch artist: "to him I owe the definitive education of my eyes". He participated in the Salon des Refusés in 1863 with the painting Ruins of the Castle of Rosemont, next to Manet's controversial painting Le déjeuner sur l'herbe (Lunch on the Grass); both are now in the Musée d'Orsay. His landscapes of Normandy, of canals and beaches of the North Sea, of the banks of the Seine, of Paris, and later of Grenoble, translate in finely nuanced tones the light and atmosphere of those places. Contrary to the Impressionists, he painted his pictures in the studio after the sketches and watercolors he drew outside. Sometimes he repeated the same subject under different lights or in different seasons (a typically impressionist idea later adopted by his friend Monet). He led a disordered life and finally, with psychic problems (melancholy, paranoia) and alcoholic, he died in the asylum of Saint-Égrève near Grenoble. According to Monet, Jongkind's work, along with that of Corot and Boudin, is the origin of Impressionism.

Stein, Jongkind, Paris, 2003, No. 665Born in 1819 in Lattrop, in the Netherlands, Johan Barthold Jongkind was an influential artist who paved the way for Impressionist art. Claude Monet declared: 'His painting was too new and in far too artistic a strain to be then, in 1862, appreciated at its true worth.' Jongkind's paintings typically depict marine landscapes, both in the Netherlands and France, which he sketched in watercolour and then painted in oil in his studio. Pissarro declared that 'Landscape without Jongkind would have a totally different aspect'. In addition to being esteemed by renowned artists, Jongkind was also acclaimed by literary men such as Emile Zola and Charles Baudelaire.
