    • ATTRIBUTED TO LUIS JUAREZ (MEXICO, CIRCA 1585 - 1639)
      Oct. 31, 2024

ATTRIBUTED TO LUIS JUAREZ (MEXICO, CIRCA 1585 - 1639)

      Est: €7,000 - €10,000

Attributed to Luis Juarez (Mexico, circa 1585 - 1639) 'Saint Augustine of Hippo and Saint Gregory the Great, Fathers of the Church, and The Four Evangelists' Set of six oils on copper. 22.5 x 17 cm (2) each, and 21 x 16 cm (4) each. A magnificent collection of 6 paintings on copper depicting the Evangelists with their iconic symbols and two of the four Fathers of the Church. Matthew with the angel, a man with wings highlighting the humanity of the Son of God; Mark with the lion, a symbol of strength, courage, and royalty; Luke with the bull, a beast of burden, calm and humble, and John with the eagle, the mystic who sees the world from the heights. The two Fathers of the Church depicted are Saint Gregory the Great and Saint Augustine of Hippo. (Possibly the other two, Saint Jerome of Stridon and Saint Ambrose of Milan are missing to complete the octet). Faux ovals contain phrases from their writings, representative of the Gospels or Roman liturgy: 'Book of the Genealogy of Jesus, Son of David'; 'Behold, I send an angel before you'; 'who is famous among all the churches for his preaching of the gospel'; 'In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God'; 'Order our days in Your peace'; and 'No one should pass without penance.' With vibrant and lively colours, creating a cheerful and dynamic rhythm, the paintings display meticulous attention to detail, as well as soft light and shadows. The figures exhibit an idealised yet 'almost real' beauty, balanced and serene, capturing the viewer as a contemplative observer of the saints of the church to imitate and follow. Spanish Americas. Oil.

      Dec. 01, 2022

      Luis Juárez (Mexico, circa 1585 - 1639)

      Est: €24,000 - €28,000

Luis Juárez (Mexico, circa 1585 - 1639) "Father Simón Rojas taking the children before the Virgin Mary to pray the rosary" Oil on copper. It is accompanied by its period carved, gilded and estofado wooden frame. 67 x 52cm. Frame measurements: 87 x 72 cm. There are two small handwritten texts, one "AVE MARÍA" pronounced by Padre de Rojas, and another that emerges from the child kneeling before the angel that reads "AVE. MAR. P.ROJAS" (Hail Maria Padre Rojas). This painting has an unquestionable relationship to other paintings kept in Museums or important collections such as "Birth of the Virgin" painted on copper in 1620, which is part of the collection of the Denver Art Museum, with the registration number 2011.425. Among other similarities we find the ornamental detail in the fabrics, such as carpets, canopy, draperies that cover the bed and the front of the altar in our painting. The figure of the angel that appears in this painting is identical to the one that Juárez usually painted, with the characteristic curly blond hair and delicate features. We find the angel, for example, in "The Annunciation" painted on copper in 1615, which is preserved in the Blaisten Museum in Mexico. Father Simón de Rojas, Trinitarian, also known as "Father Avemaría", was the founder of the Congregation of Slaves of Our Lady. The scene shows Father de Rojas, accompanied by a group of children, whom he leads before the Virgin Mary to pray the rosary , while an angel hands him a rosary. Colonial School.

    • Attributed to Luis Juárez (Mexico, circa 1585 - 1639). Nun’s badge.

Attributed to Luis Juárez (Mexico, circa 1585 - 1639). Nun’s badge.

      Est: €800 - €1,200

Attributed to Luis Juárez (Mexico, circa 1585 - 1639). "The Annunciation with Saint Jerome and Saint Francis of Assisi" Nun’s badge. Oil on copper. 13 x 10,5 cm. The LACMA in Los Angeles, has a nun’s badge in its collection by the Mexican painter Francisco Martínez (Mexico, 1687-1758) dated circa 1750, with the central theme of The Annunciation surrounded by Saints. (Inv. M.2015.142.1) As Professor Ilona Katzew, Curator and Head of the Latin American Art Department at the LACMA in Los Angeles, notes with respect to these nun’s shields: "This small-scale painting is a badge worn by nuns of the Order of the Immaculate Conception (also known as Conceptionists) in Mexico as part of their dress. Painted badges originated in Mexico in response to religious reforms introduced by the archbishop Francisco Manso y Zúñiga (ruled 1629-1635), who attempted to curtail the luxury and privilege of the convent lifestyle. He forbade nuns to wear shields made of gold, precious stones, and enamel. The nuns circumvented this rule by commissioning shields painted on copper or parchment, and set into frames made of tortoiseshell. Many of the badges were painted by the best artists of the day." This genre of devotional art was widespread during the 17th and 18th centuries in Spain and the New Hispanic world. They tended to be small pictures painted or embroidered with religious scenes, which nuns wore on their chests as they took their vows. It is in the classic portraits of crowned nuns, also with flowers, veils and other ornaments, where we can see the relevance these badges had. On occasions, artists of the calibre of José de Páez, Miguel Cabrera and Luís Juárez, who was, it seems to us, the painter of this shield, made some of these badges. Colonial.
