In 2007, he represented his country at the Venice Biennale; a video installation by Yao Jui-Chung was sold at auction for around 17,000 euros in 2008 in New York This extraordinary pop art sculpture of a golden baby with blue eyes was created by the Taiwanese artist Yao Jui-Chung in the year 2005. The naked, neat 'Baby Boy' is sitting there with angled arms and legs, staring into the world with blue eyes that are as wide opened as the pink-painted mouth. The original material of the work is obviously an industrially manufactured plastic baby doll. As 'rectified readymade', the entire sculpture is- except for the finger nails - apprehended in gold leaf. Already irritating enough by this bright golden surface, Yao Jui-Chung confuses the observer additionally by the annexation of tiny, blue devil's horns. The artist himself regards this piece as a very important work in his oeuvre, because he picked 'Golden Baby with blue Eyes' as the cover of the 2008 monograph. An extraordinary example of Asian pop art! The sculpture 'Golden Baby' is underneath signed by the artist with 'Yao Jui-Chung' (in Chinese characters), dated '2005', as well as numbered '15/12'. The condition of the sculpture is, with merely minimal abrasion of the surface, very good. The dimensions of the figure are 19.5 x 18 cm (height x width). Yao Jui-Chung (born 1969) The Taiwanese artist Yao Jui-Chung studied art theory at the National Institute of the Arts in Taipei. His versatile artistic creation encompasses installations, photographs, performances, videos, works on paper and sculptures. Furthermore, he also works as curator, art historian and art critic, and teaches fine arts at the Taiwan Normal University. He took part in artist-in-residence programmes at the Headland Center for the Arts in San Francisco (1997), at the Gasworks Studios in London (2001), and at Glenfiddich in Scotland (2007). In 2005, he represented Taiwan at the International Triennial of Contemporary Art in Yokohama and in 2007 at the Venice Biennale. His works are located in the collections of the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, the Queensland Art Gallery (Sydney), the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art Collection, Cornell University, the French National Library, and numerous private collections.
