Bernard-Romain Julien (French 1802-1871) Lithograph on wove paper, published in The Moral, Religious, Literary and Scenic Caricature, volume 4, August 2, 1832 (Plate no. 186), titled 'Maniere simple et facile de prendre et d'apprivoiser les dindons.' Aubert (printer, lithographer, editor). Collector stamp bottom right. Mounted in paper folio. Unframed. (5/24) From the estate of George Longstreet. Acquired from the estate of George Longstreet, a renown collector of fine original illustrations and prints, and whose collection has appeared in dozens of museums and exhibits over the last four decades. In 1976, Armand Hammer acquired 5000 Daumier objects that George Longstreet began to amass in Paris more than 50 years ago. The Daumier collection is now part of the permanent collection in the Armand Hammer Wing of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Bernard Romain Julien (1802 Bayonne - 1871 ibid.) after Antoine Maurin (1793 Perpignan - 1860 Paris): The Royal Family of France, Louis Philippe, c. 1830, Lithography Technique: Lithography on Paper Inscription: At the lower part signed in the printing plate: "Lith. par Julien d'après N. Maurin / Lith. de Lemercier, rue du Four S. G. No. 55.". Inscribed in the printing plate: "A Paris, chez Bulla, rue S'. Jacques No. 38. / Famille Royale.". Date: c. 1830 Description: The French lithographer Nicolas-Eustache Maurin created a large number of portraits of famous contemporaries in addition to book illustrations and some erotic depictions. Surrounded by his closest family, the "Citizen King" Louis-Philippe I from the House of Bourbon is portrayed here. He is grouped with his wife Maria Amalia of Naples-Sicily and the nine sons and daughters of the royal couple above two crossed flags and in front of insignia at the sides. After the profound political and social upheavals of the French Revolution and the July Revolution in 1830, it was of great importance for the monarch to be portrayed as being close to the bourgeoisie. The emphasis on the family in this lithograph, as well as the reference to Louis-Philippe's military achievements for France, place him closer to the people, despite the grouping resembling a divine Olympus. However, the ambiguity of this depiction is also reminiscent of Louis-Philippe's initially liberal government, which later showed increasing ambitions to strengthen the ancien régime again. Description: Fascinating steel engraving by Henri Durau after Julien, inscribed: "N° 58 Julien del. Durau sculp. Intérieur de St. Sulpice. Publié par Valladi à Paris et à Londres chez Colnaghi. 36". Durau chose the viewer's point of view in the lower portico of the west side, so that the viewer looks through the columns into the central nave. Mighty and dark, the columns loom in the foreground, making the worshippers standing or kneeling in the church seem particularly small. The foundations of this church from the Paris district of Saint-Germain-des-Prés date back to the 12th century. Demolition in the 17th century was followed by several phases of reconstruction until the church was completed in the 18th century. Today, Saint Sulpice is a three-nave basilica with a gallery and, with a width of 57 m and a length of 118 m, is one of the largest churches in Paris.
