Nico Jungman (British, 1872-1935) 'Stefi Geyer'

        Est: £1,500 - £2,000

Nico Jungman (British, 1872-1935) 'Stefi Geyer' signed and inscribed 'Nico. Jungmann/London' (lower right)watercolour43.8 x 27.9cm (17 1/4 x 11in). Stefi Geyer (1888-1956) was a celebrated and precociously talented Hungarian violinist, here painted in about 1904, when she played before the King at St James's Hall in London at the age of fifteen. She was adored by the composer Béla Bartók, who composed his violin concerto for her three years later. That piece is also about her; the first movement is gentle, poised and quiet, much as he described her in his letters, and is marked andante sostenuto (slow and sustained). Bartók wrote to her that the second movement, marked allegro giocoso (fast and playful), depicted her 'cheerful, witty, and amusing' qualities. Both portraits were projections, and she could not reciprocate his feelings. She rejected him, and his concerto, but she kept a copy of the score in a locked drawer. After their deaths, it was revived by David Oistrakh.

        Nico Jungman (British, 1872-1935) Self portrait panel 50 x 37cm (19 11/16 x 14 9/16in); overall 77 x 66cm (30 5/16 x 26in).

        Est: £3,000 - £5,000

Nico Jungman (British, 1872-1935) Self portrait signed with monogram (lower right); signed with monogram (on the frame lower left) tempera on panel, in the artist's hand carved and painted framepanel 50 x 37cm (19 11/16 x 14 9/16in); overall 77 x 66cm (30 5/16 x 26in). Nicolaas Wilhelm Jungmann was born in Amsterdam in 1872. He moved to London in 1893 and later became a British subject. He returned often to the Netherlands and painted landscapes and portraits - commonly of mothers and young girls in traditional Dutch dress. The present lot is a portrait of the artist in his studio. The viewer is positioned at the edge of the room, peering into an intimate scene of Jungmann at work. He is dabbing his own carved frame with green paint; little bowls filled with shades of red, blue and yellow are sitting nearby, waiting to be used. His finished product - the frame of the present lot - is delicately and expertly carved. Jungmann often designed and made his own frames to accompany his paintings and the present lot is an interesting insight into this practice. It is clear that he placed great importance on his work as a whole and was both a skilled painter and carver.

Nico Wilhelm Jungmann (1872-1935) study of five naked men pulling a rope, signed "Nico" and dated 1917, inscribed "Ruhleben" Pencil drawing signed "Nico" and dated 1917, in carved wooden frame probably carved by the artist whilst imprisoned. inscribed "Ruhleben", also bears official censor's mark for "The Ruhleben Prisoner of War Camp", : Ruhleben was a civilian detention camp during the First World War, located in a village ten kilometres west of the City of Berlin. The camp detainees included men of the Allied Armies who were living, studying, working or on holiday in Germany at the outbreak of the First World War, including the crew of several civilian ships stranded in German harbours, a number of fishermen and various academics. The German authorities adhered to the Geneva Convention and allowed the camp detainees to minister their own internal affairs and gradually many societies evolved within the camp with letters, books, sports equipment and printing press being allowed in the camp. The detainees organised their own Police Force, magazine, library and postal service, which was known as the Ruhleben Express Delivery. The detainees also arranged their own entertainment and they had the Ruhleben Musical Society which produced the Mikado and the pantomime version of Cinderella, the Drama Society acting a production of Othello, Twelfth Night and The Importance of Being Ernest. Sports also played a major role in the life of the camp and numerous matches and tournaments were arranged for cricket, rugby, tennis and golf. Among the notable prisoners at Ruhleben was the artist Nico Jungmann. h:10.50 w:13.50 in.

        Est: £200 - £300

Nico Wilhelm Jungmann (1872-1935) - Pencil drawing - Study of five naked men pulling a rope, 9.75ins x 13.75ins, signed "Nico" and dated 1917, inscribed "Ruhleben", also bears official censor's mark for "The Ruhleben Prisoner of War Camp", contained in wide black oak flat frame and glazed, the frame carved with geometric motifs Note : Ruhleben was a civilian detention camp during the First World War, located in a village ten kilometres west of the City of Berlin.
