She was and is an artist, and so she shall remain. This means that throughout her life she has regarded the nepotism and networks of the art and gallery business with relative disinterest. One of the consequences of this is that she received very little public attention for decades following the initial flurry of the 1960s and 1970s - her contribution to documenta 6 in 1977 being just one example. It was only after the turn of the millennium that a second look from the outside - in this case by Albert Oehlen - officially heralded the rediscovery of this internationally renowned artist within Austria...         Martha Jungwirth Untitled 1986 oil on thin cardboard, on canvas; unframed 212 x 184 cm signed and dated on the lower left: Martha Jungwirth 1986 directly from the artist; since then private property, Vienna This large-scale work by the Austrian artist Martha Jungwirth captivates at first glance with its powerful brushwork, bold expressiveness and nuanced use of colour. One fancies that one discerns something figurative, which then disappears into abstraction again at that very instant. The thin cardboard background allows fields of colour and lines to stand out in a three-dimensional way. Very dark brushstrokes are complemented by shades of grey and even white. Many different shades ranging from red to purple as well as blue lines can be discerned, with the oil paint applied partly in a thick impasto and partly in a translucent, glazed style. At the time of creating this work, Martha Jungwirth was abandoning her concrete, reality-oriented painting style, in which everyday objects, landscapes or figurative elements were still clearly recognisable, and was developing further towards abstraction. These are gestural compositions in her own unique colour palette, which appear to float in the pictorial space. (Clarissa Mayer-Heinisch)

Color screen print on black construction paper as a poster for the exhibition in the Vienna Galerie im Stock with the motif of a lying woman. 1971. 50 x 70 cm. Signed in pencil lower right. On the occasion of the exhibition in the Galerie im Stock by Elfriede Grausam, a screen print with an almost identical motif of a lying woman was also published as a limited edition of 40 signed and numbered copies on pink and black cardboard. A similar motif is shown in a watercolor by Martha Jungwirth (Liegende mit schwarzen Stiefeln / reclining woman with black boots), which was created as part of her work about parts of the female body.

Punktuell auf Unterlage montiert und unter Glas gerahmt. - Verso punktuell leichter Papierabrieb als Spur der ehemaligen Montierung. Insgesamt gut. Prachtvoller, gratiger und kontrastreicher Druck mit breitem Rand. Eines von 70 Exemplaren. - Österreichische und zeitgenössische Künstlerin, deren Werk sich durch eine Abstraktion auszeichnet, die auf der genauen und unmittelbaren Beobachtung von Körper und Raum basiert. In diesem Sinne lotet sie mit ihrem künstlerischen Ansatz die Grenze von Abstraktion und Gegenständlichkeit aus, wie auch die vorliegende Arbeit aus dem Frühwerk eindrucksvoll beweist.
