Alfred Justitz Sold at Auction Prices

Painter

Alfréd Justitz (19 July 1879 in Nová Cerekev – 9 February 1934 in Bratislava) was a Czech Modernist painter and illustrator.

He was one of three sons born into a Jewish family; their father was a doctor and their mother a homemaker.[1] His first contact with art came in Jihlava, where he met the aspiring painter Roman Havelka [cs], who was two years his senior.

As a result, Justitz decided to pursue a creative career and began by studying architecture at the Czech Technical University in Prague with Professor Jan Kotera.[1] He transferred to the Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied with Maximilian Pirner and František Thiele (1868-1945). After that, he worked with Ludwig Schmid-Reutte in Karlsruhe and Wilhelm Trübner in Berlin.[2]

In 1910, he visited Paris, where he was influenced by the works of Paul Cézanne and Honoré Daumier. From 1918 to 1924, he exhibited with "Tvrdošíjní", a group of mostly young, modern artists. Later, he would create posters for galleries and stores. In 1927, he produced illustrations for the Czech edition of Notre Dame de Paris by Victor Hugo. The following year, he joined the Mánes Union of Fine Arts.[2]

In addition to painting, Justitz loved dogs and was an enthusiastic promoter and breeder of boxers. He became a trustee of the "CeskoMoravská Kynologická Unie" (a kennel club), where he was put in charge of maintaining the breeding records. He was also an active Freemason of the lodge "Sibi et Posteris" in Prague.[citation needed]

He died at a hospital in Bratislava, after a long illness. His ashes were returned to his hometown and placed in an urn at the Jewish cemetery. The Masonic Lodge provided support for his widow Anna, but she never recovered from his death. She committed suicide by poisoning not long after the German Occupation in 1939, when the threat of the Nazis to Jews was obvious.[1]

ALFRED JUSTITZ 1879 - 1934 - STILL LIFE WITH APPLES, BREAD AND PIPE

      Est: -

From the expert opinion of Rea Michalová, PhD, as part of Trinity Art Research: 'Alfred Justitz, a gentle observer of life, things and nature, a quiet thinker with a kind of predestined fascination with the magic of Old Testament stories, is today recognised as one of the most artistically and humanly pure representatives of the founding generation of Czech modern art. The present painting "Still Life with Apples, Bread and Pipe" can be described as a work of painterly sovereignty that bears the hallmarks of Justitz's painterly expression of the second half of the 1920s. At that time, the artist stood at the beginning of his creative peak, armed with talent, experience and immeasurable will. Numerous analogies can be found both in the subjects, with which the artist repeatedly manipulated in pictorial terms, and in the painterly treatment of the present work and other works from this period - be it structural scraping or linear contours, which bring an extraordinary optical richness and freshness to the work. The back side bears a label from the Gallery of Fine Arts Olomouc with the inventory number O-1044 on the blindframe. The painting was kept as a confiscate until 1992, when it was removed from the MUO collection in accordance with legal regulations. The handwritten inscription "Grmela" undoubtedly refers to the original owner of the work. PhDr. Jan Grmela was a librarian, prose writer, poet, translator from German and director of the Municipal Library in Prague from 1942 to 1945. During his era, the library was hiding books that were forcibly removed from the collection, of which he was probably aware. After the end of the fighting in 1945, he was brought before the Revolutionary Court. He collected sculptures and paintings, and his collection included works by Špála, Filly and Šaloun." A detailed expert restoration, art historical and X-ray fluorescence analysis has been carried out on the work. Technique: oil on canvas, Signed: sign. upper left: A Justitz 28

      ALFRED JUSTITZ 1879 - 1934 - BOUQUET IN A VASE

      Est: -

Alfred Justitz's work was based on knowledge of painting traditions and tendencies of Czech and European painting. Justitz was a solitaire from the beginning, but the Tvrdošíjní group was very close to him. He exhibited with them as a guest in 1921 and 1923 and became friends with Václav Špála. His bouquet in a vase expresses sensuality and natural aesthetics, in Alfred Justitz's conception it is a call to nature and an expression of the desire to escape. The ingenious artistic shortcut omits excessive descriptiveness and creates an impressive color contrast full of life. Technique: Oil on plywood, Signed: Lower right "A justitz"
