The End of Suffering (I) signed and dated 2017 (lower left) acrylic on canvas 60" x 48" (152 cm x 122 cm) PROVENANCE Yavuz Gallery EXHIBITED Yavuz Gallery, Yeo Kaa: Alone But Not Lonely, Gillman Barracks Singapore, January 16 - March 4, 2018 Yeo effortlessly intertwines glitz and glam with an ironically gruesome treatment in her body of work. Celebrated as one of the most dynamic contemporary Filipino artists of our time, beneath her technicolor brilliance and rise to digital fame is a deeply personal and emotional practice. Her candy-colored palette serves as a gateway to her generation's complex psyche—a generation that appreciates the clarity of a concise aesthetic while recognizing its ironic and memetic potential; a probable cause to her internet virality. This particular piece hails from Kaa’s first solo exhibit in Singapore titled Alone But Not Lonely. According to the exhibition notes: “The collection of new works by Yeo Kaa in ALONE BUT NOT LONELY asserts independence and fulfillment from solitary life, dealing with the theme of cherishing moments of being alone and seeking happiness and comfort by one’s self. The other side to attachment or commitment in relationships, as well as being in the company of crowds, is implied in the works: the loss of personal space and freedom, and a feeling of unfamiliarity towards one’s own being. Here, the absence of companionship unexpectedly becomes a productive state, one that leads to self discovery, empowerment, and the appreciation for the simple joys of life.” In this piece titled The End of Suffering (I) we see the usual archetypal stand-in that has come to populate Yeo Kaa’s works; a bright-eyed and candy-colored figure that has become synonymous with the artist’s own self. Here, words seemingly pierce, snap, and even disembowel these figures, effectively revealing the thematic core of the exhibit seemingly in transition. It is through this work that we are confronted with conflict that Yeo Kaa had experienced in order to achieve a sense of self-discovery. The End of Suffering (I) can be seen as the beginning of Yeo Kaa’s new self. In this context, Yeo Kaa's works become a poignant parody of the human condition, particularly in their exploration of mental health issues. Her art confronts these themes head-on, tongue in-cheek, offering a bold and thought- provoking commentary on contemporary society. (Jed Daya)

It's just a panic attack, I'll be okay, okay? Okay. signed and dated 2017 (lower right) acrylic on canvas 96" x 192" (244 cm x 488 cm) EXHIBITED Office for Contemporary Art (OFCA) International, Distressful Satisfaction, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, May 19 - June 19, 2017 One of the most exciting emerging artists working today, Yeo Kaa’s works take upon an eye-catching aesthetic coupled with an irreverent sensibility. Kaa is influenced by a wide variety of pop artists, from the seminal works of visual artist Yoshimoto Nara to the more mainstream creations of Japanese animators and mangakas Though much of her success is often attributed to her pastel and eye-popping pieces, what makes Yeo Kaa’s works deeply arresting are the profound and astute messages that lay beneath her candy-colored veneer. This precarious balance between her stylized figurations and her more macabre undertones carefully exhibits an overarching contemporary mentality that is characterized by a radically optimistic sort of nihilism. This monumental masterpiece by the artist is among the best examples of her work. The work was created during Yeo Kaa’s artist residency at the Office of Contemporary Art at Yogyakarta, Indonesia. This particular collaboration may be considered pivotal given the OFCA’s dedication to promote active and skilled emerging artists in an international context. Their decision to work with Yeo Kaa can be seen as a testament to the novel voice Yeo Kaa has to offer not only the country, but the world. According to Rafael Cuusi and Ryan Francis Reyes: “She calls this series Distressful Satisfaction, instructive of the overarching theme unifying the works: the contrast between the opposing temperaments of suffering and pain on the one hand, and pleasure and satisfaction on the other. Her art has always been founded on the friction between opposites, and it is this tension that invigorates her craft and sets it apart from the imagery found in children’s books or animation. In her previous works, one would always see images of violence and gore, such as mutilated body parts or a murder scene, combined with smiling characters rendered in joyful, saturated colors. She capitalizes on the discomfort created by such unlikely combination, a sort of disjuncture between style and subject, to lead her viewers into a continuous and sustained engagement with the painted image, constantly unsettling preconceived notions and associations about certain visual properties.” In the world of Yeo Kaa, the glitter and gruesome go hand in hand. Effectively showcasing that not everything is as it seems under the facade we often put up. (J.D.)

Kaa is concerned with expressing her own personal experiences through the medium of her art. While her candy-colored aesthetic exemplifies the two-fold temperament of her generation; one that sees the value of a clear and concise aesthetic, but also understands its ironic and even memetic potential in the real world. Though her works are steeped in her personal circumstances, she still manages to relate them to a variety of universal and social themes and concepts that allow viewers to relate to her pieces on a much more profound and even personal level. This particular piece titled Darling What’s Wrong embodies that very approach. The acrylic on canvas piece features a relatively explicit scene that features a first-person perspective of an individual looking at their pair of trousers which is halfway unfurled at their legs. At the very center of the garment is one of Kaa’s iconic characters lounging about, martini glass in hand. This combination of jarring and absurd elements lends the piece an air of humor. Though the work implies a degree of austerity, Kaa utilizes humor as a way of making the topic not only more approachable, but empowering as well. In an interview with ARNDT Fine Art, when asked about her use of a bright color palette and the fact that she often explores deep and serious subjects, she replied that “Because it looks happy. Just like me, I often exude a happy vibe, however, this can at times be a facade.” (J.D.)

The vibrant yet dark Lolita on this masterpiece showed how the artist mixes her candyflavored palette and doll-life figuration with dark and disturbing imagery that brings shock and discomfort to some, while easing the sensitivity of confronting real-life horrors to others. The piece is drawn with a careful outlining, layering and studies in contrasts - a proper exploratory venue where Yeo Kaa is able to showcase her very distinct style - vivid and thought provoking.

Consequently, her pieces come off as real and genuine tableaus of both her personal experiences and the overarching human condition—allowing her works to be read as both a parody of contemporary life and as heartfelt passage about the realities of being human. This 2017 oil on canvas piece can be read as an exploration and an in-depth look into the deeply personal and often isolated process of making art. The piece features a bobble-headed and bug-eyed pink figure, a recurring motif that is often interpreted as being Kaa herself, amidst a spatially distorted room. Though the room’s ceilings and walls are relatively intact, its floor has given way, revealing a nebulous black space. In front of Kaa’s figure is a set of four portrait paintings, each one done in a slightly different color palette. Kaa’s work can be seen as a visualization of the creative process, one that is oftentimes a venture pursued alone.

Yeo Kaa (b. 1989) Surrounded by Many and Still Feeling Lonely signed and dated 2017 (lower right) acrylic and fine art print on Hahnemuhle paper Though known for her eye-catching and candy colored aesthetics, this piece by contemporary artist Yeo Kaa seemingly breaks from her own artistic conventions in order to emphasize the darkly profound depths that often inhabit the underbellies of her works. Despite being known for her style’s eclectic energy and accessibility given her influences from modern and contemporary styles such as Pop art and the Superflat style, Yeo’s works often carry with them deep and personal experiences. Consequently, her pieces come off as real and genuine tableaus of both her personal experiences and the overarching human condition. In this piece entitled Surrounded By Many and Still Feeling Lonely, Yeo does not obscure her intention behind multiple layers. Instead her message and theme is clear. From the direct and succinct nature of her title, to her use of familiar and recognizable symbolisms and archetypes, her piece is accessible and free from showy prerequisites. Despite being deeply personal, Yeo’s work shows how individual problems often require a social solution. Much like how being lonely can only be amended by wholistic communication, art can only reach its fullest potential when it invites understanding from all walks of life, and not only from a select few. Estimate in USD $2600-$3380

            Yeo Kaa - (b.1989) - I Can’t Stop Crying

Yeo Kaa (b.1989) I Can’t Stop Crying signed and dated 2017 (upper left) oil on canvas Yeo says she was early on influenced by Pablo Picasso. Not perhaps in style but in philosophy. She had just been made aware then of the Spanish painter. To hear her say it, being introduced to Picasso’s art set her free. A huge part of her work — even the more recent ones — is influenced by the famous Japanese artist, Yoshitomo Nara, who is most known for sculptures and paintings that juxtapose big-eyed, child faces with gory details. Having come to the fore of the Japanese Pop Art movement in the 1990s, Yoshitomo Nara’s subject matter of his sculptures and paintings is deceptively simple: most works depict often pastel-hued children and animals drawn with confident, cartoonish lines) with little or no background. Nara’s children, appear at first to be cute and even vulnerable, but sometimes brandish weapons like knives and saws. Their wide eyes often hold accusatory looks that could be sleepy-eyed irritation at being awoken from a nap — or that could be undiluted expressions of hate. Eventually, Yeo Kaa admits that she had to refrain from observing Nara’s works after some time. She started minding her own life and immediate surroundings.
