Kaburagi Kiyokata was one of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi's last students, and after Yoshitoshi's death in 1892 he continued his training with Mizuno Toshikata, a fellow Yoshitoshi student. He is primarily known as a Japanese-style painter, the majority of his woodblock prints were made between 1901 and 1910. He was influential as teacher and mentor of many Shin Hanga artists, such as Ito Shinsui and Kawase Hasu.

    Title: Shunjo. Portrait of a young woman before a background of pine and plum blossoms. Signed: Kiyokata. Seal: Kiyokata. Block carver: Yoshihisa. Printer: Matsui. Fine impression with lacquer, fine colours and condition. Kaburagi Kiyokata was instrumental in the development and promotion of the shin-hanga movement. He taught, among others, Itô Shinsui, Shiro Kasamasu, Yamakawa Shuho and Torii Kotondo and he introduced them to Watanabe Shôsaburô who published their works for a longer or shorter period of time.

    Usuyuki (Light snow) from the series Meiji jugonen goro no fuzoku (Fashion around Meiji 15 [1882]) Woodcut, signed Narau Taiso-o i (In remembrance of Taiso [Tsukioka Yoshitoshi]) Kiyokata, sealed Murasaki, and with additional blind-printed seal as the print was made on the anniversary of Yoshitoshi's death, published by Katsumura Kanezo, numbered on verso 32/250, in original paper folder dated 1933.9.10--very good impression and color, light soiling 50 x 35.8cm.
