In 1928, an ideological competition was announced for a large monument to Milan Rastislav Štefánik for Bratislava. By the beginning of September Kafka had completed the first plastic sketch in the scale of 1:40. It turned out that the matters connected with the Štefánik monument were complicated, as it was not only an artistic but also a political issue. During 1929 Kafka modelled six more variants and began to concentrate on the Štefánik-airman variant. The auxiliary model, which was exhibited in Paris, where it was also purchased by the French Ministry of Education, was 247 cm high, and the final statue, which measured 760 cm, was also based on it. In 1936, permission to realise it came, ending a struggle that lasted a total of eight years. The offered statue cast in bronze represents the sculpture of General Stefanik, which he created before the six variants mentioned above. In it, he abandons sculptural realism and gives expression to the author's work with matter. The offered work comes from the estate of the author from the famous Kafka's villa in Prague 6 - Ořechovka. Signed: signed and dated on the plinth: B. KAFKA / 1928

In 1913, Kafka finally closed the warehouse of his sculptures in Paris and settled in a new studio in Prague 7. The bust of Jaroslav Vrchlický and the bust of the actor Jindřich Mosna were placed in the foyer of the National Theatre. A few years later, after the death of Stanislav Sucharda, he was appointed professor at the School of Applied Arts in Prague. This opened a new chapter in his life, which was intensified by the political and social changes after the end of the First World War. The offered work comes from the estate of the author from the famous Kafka's villa in Prague 6 - Ořechovka. Published: Kafka, Bohumil and Wittlich, Petr. As early as March 1905, Kafka applied to the Paris prefecture for permission to sketch animals in the Jardin des Plantes. He would always go there in the spring to draw in the mornings, and the result was the intimate sculptures of a doe and her fawns, a camel, and later an elephant, which became Kafka's most successful and sought-after sculptures. For Kafka, the contact he made with the Lithuanian workshop A. A. Hébrard. Here he also met the Italian Rembradt Bugatti. The two artists worked on the animal sculptures almost simultaneously. While Kafka concluded this series in 1908 with a sculpture of a bull, Bugatti continued his animal sculptures. Kafka's animals represent a very modern sculptural impressionism, which he continued to develop in his later works. "Kafka is not only a physiognomist, but also an excellent modeler of the nude and an animalist - his animal sculptures are the result of a synthetic vision and achieve style." Continues Petr Wittlich: "In Kafka's works there is a chill of life, an expressiveness of silhouettes, a skill of ornament and a fiery, somewhat dark imagination, an artistry and elegance of spirit." One of the key moments of Kafka's stay in Paris was a solo exhibition in 1906, comprising 27 works, which brought the artist an excellent reputation in Paris and his native Bohemia. The exhibition was favourably reviewed in the New York Herald and seven Parisian dailies reported on its opening. Bourdelle personally congratulated Kafka at the exhibition. The camel was made in only four casts, of which the one on offer is cast number 2. The offered work comes from the estate of the author from the famous Kafka's villa in Prague 6 - Ořechovka. BOHUMIL KAFKA 1878 - 1942 - EMPRESS ELISABETH

      Est: -

In 1902, Kafka decided to take part in a competition for the realization of a monument dedicated to Empress Elisabeth of Bavaria, as evidenced by the author's text: 'I have been working since mid-November on a competition for a monument to Empress Elisabeth for Vienna. I expect around 60 proposals to come together for Vienna. I am 60 times more certain of passing than winning. Among the Czech artists competing are Myslbek, Sucharda, myself, Kalvoda, Kvasnička, Šaloun, Rous, Říha, Halman. The first prize is 5,000 gold, and when I get it, you will know what a banquet is." (1903) It was above all the tragic fate of the popular empress called Sisi that attracted so many people interested in the realization, after all, a monument dedicated to a woman was not a frequent commission at that time. Kafka chose a figure in a rich fashionable dress and an intimate gesture of the right hand lightly touching the cheek. In the sketch, the figure was also accompanied by allegories of virtues - Peace, Justice, Resolve and Wisdom. Kafka also sculpted a metre-long figure of the Empress herself as a detail of the entire competition design. The competition for the monument was eventually won by the Austrian artists Friedrich Ohmann and Hans Bitterlich. The offered sculpture comes from the estate of the artist. BOHUMIL KAFKA 1878 - 1942 - WOMAN ADJUSTING HER HAIR AFTER BATH

      Est: -

Kafka's experiences from his summer stay in the seaside town of Omnival with his colleague Karel Špillar and his wife gave birth to the impressionistic sculpture Woman Adjusting Her Hair After Bath. This sculpture highlights the deep dark space created by the opening of a long bathrobe. Petr Wittlich writes: "This sculpture in particular is remarkable for its intuition of inner space, an idea that was originally symbolist, but here acquires a new expressive immediacy on a civilian theme." In a modest studio on the avenue d'Orléans in Paris (1905-1908), Kafka worked feverishly to produce a large series of intimate sculptures of various orientations, with which he permanently represented himself, and which, even from today's perspective, are among his most modern creations. The artist's internationally comparable artistic level is shown by his pre-war works now on permanent display at the National Gallery in the Trade Fair Palace. Prof. PhDr. Petr Wittlich, CSc. characterizes his work with the words: "In Kafka's works there is a chill of life, expressiveness of silhouettes, skill of ornament and a fervent, somewhat dark imagination, artistry and elegance of spirit." The collection of eight sculptures on offer comes from the artist's estate from his famous villa in Prague 6, Ořechovka, which was designed for him by architect Pavel Janák. Bohumil Kafka's sculptural work was largely created in the spirit of Art Nouveau and Symbolist tendencies. Kafka studied at the Sculpture and Stone School in Hořice v Podkrkonoší and at the School of Applied Arts in Prague. In 1904-1908 he lived and worked in Paris. BOHUMIL KAFKA 1878 - 1942 - A BOY WITH GRAPES

      Est: -

Kafka's masterful work Boy with Grapes can be placed in the author's first Prague sojourn after his return from Paris. In 1908, a year before Boy with Grapes was written, Parisian critics praised Kafka's work as "passionate and delicious, bizarre and natural". It was from Paris that Kafka drew the creative trends that in the first decade of the 20th century represented the transition from the family school to the classicizing E. A. Bourdelle and monumentalizing corporeality as the humanist mission of art. Kafka's Boy with Grapes is a response to a purely Art Nouveau motif presented in the most dynamic and modern way. At the same time, he supplied the entrance hall of the Art Nouveau Municipal House with two large reliefs, Flora and Fauna, inspired by Gauguin's paintings. This important Czech sculptor Bohumil Kafka is best known as the author of the monumental equestrian statue of Jan Žižka in Vítkov or the monument to the painter Josef Mánes on the embankment near the Rudolfinum building. In his works he was open to the influence of Symbolism and in his early work also to the decorative requirements of Art Nouveau. At the time of the formation of the Czechoslovak state, after the death of Stanislav Sucharda, he replaced his teaching position at the Prague School of Applied Arts. The offered work is published in the book Bohumil Kafka His Works from 1900 to 1918, Prague 1919, on page 19. Signed: signed on the plinth: B. KAFKA / 1909

BOHUMIL KAFKA (Prague, 1878 - 1942). "Jan Ziza on horseback", 1932. Bronze. Signed and dated on the base. It was included in the exhibition: "European sculpture of the 20th century", European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM), Barcelona, 2014. Measurements: 97 x 95 x 38 cm. High-quality equestrian sculpture, a scale version of the monument that Bohumil Kafka made to pay homage to the military man Jan Zizka, located on Vitkov Hill in Prague, where the battle it commemorates took place. Bohumil Kafka was a Czech sculptor and educator. He studied in Prague with the sculptor Josef Václav Myslbek before moving to Vienna and then to Paris to continue his studies. He worked in London, Berlin and Rome before returning and settling in Prague. He often worked in a symbolist and expressive style. He was a notable animalist, as well as being known for his decorative sculpture. He is considered a predecessor of the Art Nouveau style and was greatly influenced by the works of Auguste Rodin. Jan Zizka (1360-1424) fought at the Battle of Grunwald in 1410. Zizka became the leader of the Hussite army, made up of peasants and farmers. He won victory over the crusaders sent to destroy the Hussite movement. It is said that during World War II the Germans sought the model of this statue in order to destroy it. The model was cut into pieces and hidden in many different places. After the war, the pieces were put back together and the statue was put up again.

Bohumil Kafka, a significant Czech sculptor, is best known as the author of the monumental statue of Jan Žižka in Vítkov or the monument to the painter Josef Mánes the Rudolfinum building in Prague. In his works, he was open to the influence of Symbolism and in his early work also to the decorative requirements of Art Nouveau. Between 1904 and 1908, he worked in Paris, where he had the opportunity to see the work of Auguste Rodin and E. A. Bourdelle, along with the atmosphere of the emergence and gradual differentiation of modern art. At the time of the formation of the Czechoslovak state, after the death of Stanislav Sucharda, he replaced his teaching position at the Prague School of Arts and Crafts. At this time, the coexistence of sculpture and architecture was essential for Kafka. Large ideal figures were to be in balance with classic architecture. "The kneeling female nude entitled After Bathing from 1918 demonstrates," writes Professor Peter Wittlich "Kafka's attempt to really practice the basic principle of the New Style, that the human body as the figure is a formal assembly of the torso and its limbs, having a symbolic character. But even here the gaze of the sculpture, which is actually the mental counterweight of corporeality itself, had its weight." Published: Petr Wittlich. Bohumil Kafka. Bohumil Kafka (1878-1942) OBJETÍ LÁSKY A SMRTI Model náhrobní plastiky Josefa Kaizla na pražském vyšehradském hřbitově, olovo, v. 24,5 cm, š. 38,5 cm. Umělci na této prestižní zakázce velmi záleželo, neboť objednavatelkou byla vdova po Josefu Kaizlovi (1854-1901) - významném českém vědci, profesorovi, ekonomovi a politikovi, poslanci Říšské rady a 1898-1899 ministru financí Předlitavska. Vyšel z oblíbeného tématu smutečního anděla, jehož nechal pokleknout s křídly široce rozklenutými a v rysech tváře jej připodobnil dceři zemřelého. P.
