Painter, b. 1927 - d. 2020

Wolf Kahn was born in Germany in 1927, but he escaped from the country during World War II. He eventually settled in New York and studied art under the renowned Abstract Expressionist Hans Hoffman. Wolf Kahn's artwork borrows influence from his mentor's style, but it also incorporates the discipline of color field, which emphasizes painting in large, uninterrupted blocks of color. Thus, paintings and prints by Wolf Kahn blend bands of color with abstract forms to produce dreamlike landscapes. 

Kahn has enjoyed a long career marked by extensive travels and prestigious awards such as the Fulbright Scholarship. Yet, many paintings by Wolf Kahn frequently recall the lush scenery near his farm in Vermont, where he spends each summer. The painting is dated 1986 to the stretcher, canvas, and gallery tag. Original framing is the tack-on frame typical of what Wolf Kahn had so often used in the period. The stretcher is originally marked and titled "Fall Maples" and #6 1986. A version of this composition, possibly made as a study, also exists as a pastel on paper. The painting was sold by Grace Borgenicht Gallery, New York (records exist in the Smithsonian Archives of American Art) and by Skinner, Massachusetts. MEASUREMENT: The framed size is 29 1/4" X 45 1/4". CONDITION: No damage or restoration.

    Attributed to Wolf Kahn, German, American, 1927 to 2020, oil painting on masonite board depicting a forest landscape. Signed lower left. Framed. Wolf Kahn was born in Germany in 1927 and found his way to America in 1940. After coming to America, he spent time in the United States Navy. Thanks to the G.I. Bill, Kahn was able to study under the great abstract expressionist painter Hans Hofmann. In 1950, he enrolled at the University of Chicago and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in one short year. When he left school, he was determined to become an artist. To make his dream come true, he and some fellow students founded the Hansa Gallery. It was in this gallery that Kahn had his first solo show. Kahn joined the Grace Borgenicht Gallery in 1956 and regularly showed his work until 1995. Kahn loves working in oils and pastels and loves working with color. He enjoys pushing color to his limits. He brings color to the point that it almost becomes too much. It is use of color blended with the Realism art form that makes him unique as a painter. Landscapes and nature are his favorite subjects. Kahn has spent a great deal of his life traveling, and this is well represented in his work. He has painted the wonderful landscapes across America as well as in Italy, Greece and Mexico. Today he focuses his work on nature. He is known for many paintings but there are three that stand out. The Evening Glow located at University of Rochester; My Barn on a Summer Night located at Hirshman Museum; and Pond in November at National Academy of Design. One of a kind artwork.

Provenance: Private art collection Denver, Colorado. Wolf Kahn (1927 - 2020) was active/lived in New York, Vermont / Germany. Wolf Kahn is known for Abstract landscape and still life painting. Wolf Kahn is a landscape painter for whom color is his signature. Continually striving for a deeper insight into the possibilities of color, Wolf Kahn makes landscape paintings with techniques of luminism. Born in Stuttgart, Germany, Kahn emigrated to the U.S. as a child. After attending classes at the New School for Social Research he studied with Hans Hofmann at his School of Fine Art in New York City. Wolf Kahn has been honored with numerous awards and his work can be found in the permanent collections of over 100 museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
