PROPERTY  FROM  A  PRIVATE  COLLECTION,  HONG  KONG B.  1974 CONDITIONS  APPLY This  work  is  made  up  of  a  series  of  scanned  images  of  rotis  that  have  been  eaten  away  to  imitate  the  different  phases  of  the  moon.  According  to  Girish  Shahane  the  sequence  'alludes  both  to  the  earning  of  daily  bread  (rozi  roti  in  Hindustani),  and  the  fast  (roza)  of  Ramzan/  Ramadhan,  a  period  of  abstinence  for  Muslims  the  conclusion  of  which  relies  upon  the  sighting  of  the  new  moon  (perhaps  one  of  the  'conditions'  that  apply).  Though  this  interpretation  is  culture-specific,  the  image  is  accessible  even  to  those  who  know  little  of  rotis  or  rozas.'  (Girish  Shahane,  Jitish  Kallat:  Unclaimed  Baggage,  Albion,  London  2007) Kallat  has  revisited  the  imagery  with  the  rotis  as  phases  of  the  moon  in  a  poignant  work  titled  Epilogue  (2010/11)  which  was  featured  at  Art  Unlimited,  Art  Basel  in  2012.  Epilogue  documents  the  life-span  of  Kallat's  father.
