LEON KANN (Alsace, 1859-1925). Bronze and brass. Signed. Measurements: 31 x 18 x 13 cm. Léon Kann studied sculpture with Aimé Millet and the distinguished animalier sculptor Pierre Louis Rouillard. He concentrated on small decorative pieces that he exhibited in the Salons of the Sociéte des Artistes Français. He was a designer at the Sévres Porcelain Factory between 1896 and 1915. Alexander Sandier, artistic director of Sévres, embraced the Art Nouveau style and called on leading designers of the time to create bold new shapes, glazes and decorations. Léon Kann was among this group of designers, including Hector Guimard, Joseph Chéret and Henri Lassere. It was a time in Sévres when the pleasure of experimentation and creativity was encouraged. Kann's brilliant designs perfectly capture the spirit of Art Nouveau. He drew much inspiration from the natural forms and mottled glazes of Asian ceramics. He was a master of artistically incorporating different parts of a plant to create coiled, tendril-like handles in naturalistic forms.

A PAIR OF ART NOUVEAU GILT AND PATINATED CAST BRONZE "Ombelliferes" VASES, LEON KANN (French 1859-1925) CAST BY SIOT-DECAUVILLE FOUNDRY, PARIS, FRANCE, CIRCA 1900, of stylized naturalistic form, each lost wax cast of waisted ovoid form imitating Florence fennel (Foeniculum vulgare var. azoricum) bulbs, stalks, and blossoms, with overlapping leaves forming the base and bundled stalks for the handles, highlighted by gilt umbel form flower heads sprouting from the stalks and encasing the upper portion of the vases, both signed on the side "L. Kann" and stamped "SIOT-PARIS," one numbered "Y651," and the other stamped "2" on the bottom. Height: 15 5/8" Diameter: 8 1/4" Note: Equiped with training in the Beaux-Arts tradition, the ceramic designer Leon Kann found his expression outside of the staid and predictable historicist vocabulary that prevailed in France at the end of the nineteenth century. As a designer for the Manufacture National de Sevres, Kann was exposed to the unbound creativity and quest to explore new forms of expression within the field of decorative arts which blossomed into the "Art Nouveau" style during the closing years of the century.

c. 1900. The shallow oblong-shaped bronze dish features a pair of swallows cast in high relief on the crest of a wave. The dish rests on a raised circular foot with added felt cover. With "L. Kann" signed to the front. Approx. 16 1/4 by 13 1/8 in., 41.4 by 33.5 cm.
