KANO SEISEN'IN OSANOBU: A SCROLL PAINTING OF JUROJIN By Kano Seisen'in Osanobu (1796-1846), signed Seisen Hogen hitsu with seal Hogen Japan, early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Ink and watercolors on silk. Mounted as a hanging scroll on a silk brocade frame, with bone jikusaki (roller ends). Depicting the Lucky God Jurojin, holding a nyoi scepter in one hand, as he looks down to the young boy presenting him with a minogame (thousand-year-tortoise). Inscriptions: Signed to the bottom left ‘Seisen hogen hitsu’ [Painted by Seisen, with the Hogen title] 晴川法眼筆, one seal ‘Hogen’ 法眼. One inscription to the back. Image SIZE 92 x 33.5 cm, SIZE incl. mounting 170 x 36.5 cm Condition: Good condition with wear and slight browning to paper and minor stains. The frame with traces of wear and use. Kano Seisen'in Osanobu (1796-1846) was the son of Isen'in Naganobu, he became head of the family following his father's death in 1828. He first took the name Gyokusen, then later changed to Seisen'in. Under the guidance and influence of his father, he came to attach great importance to the study of the classics, and in the course of his lifetime he produced an enormous quantity of copies, not only of Muromachi-period Chinese-style works of the Kano school, but also of the Chinese works from which they derived; he also copied painting-scrolls in the traditional 'yamato-e' style and even works such as 'Deer and Cranes’. A distinguished painter, he received the rank of hogen in 1819 and of hoin in 1834. A RARE AND ELEGANT THREE-CASE LACQUER INRO INSPIRED BY KANO YASUNOBU (1796-1846) Inscribed Seisen’in Hoin with kao Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) A three-case inro lacquered in gold, silver and red takamaki-e depicting a chirping bird perched on a cherry blossom branch, the reverse showing a carnelian branch, all set on a beautiful and elegant wood ground with a fine grain. Dense nashiji covering the risers and inside. Gold lacquered inscription on the inside of the lid reading Seisen’In Hoin with red laquer kao – referring to a painting from Kano Yasunobu, whose art name was Seisen and who inspired many inro makers and lacquerers throughout the 19th century. HEIGHT 7.8 cm Condition: Miniscule losses to lacquer painting and very minor wear along the edges. Very good condition. Provenance: German private collection. KANO SEISENIN OSANOBU (1796 – 1846): LUCKY GOD JUROJIN

Triptych, ink and pain on silk. Japan, 19th cent. The middle image features the white-bearded Jurojin in large format, one of Japan’s Seven Lucky Gods, the shichi fukujin. The name Jurojin 壽老人 means “long-lived old man”. He is standing, wearing a Chinese courtly dress, beneath the knotted branch of a pine tree (a symbol of longevity) next to a rock and is holding a long bamboo stick with both hands. Behind him lies his companion, a white stag. In the bottom right-hand corner is the signature SEI-SEN-IN HO-IN OSA-NOBU fude 晴川院法印養信筆 and the red seal “Hoin Osanobu”. The “Hoin” in his signature is an honorary title. The two other images complement the middle images symbolism of longevity, focusing the whole triptych on this statement. The left-hand image features the lively depiction of a flying red-capped crane (tancho tsuru) with its wings spread wide. Directly beneath the precisely painted bird is a very impressively drawn plum tree, its branches full of blossoms. The tancho (“red-cap”) is a wide-spread symbol of longevity in Japan, as is the plum. The signature and seal in the bottom left-hand corner are the same as described above. The right-hand image depicts a pair of cranes walking beside green bamboo culms, also symbolic of “long life”. In the lower right-hand corner, the same signature as above. Osanobu was the son of Kano Naganobu and received many commissions for public works. He was a defender of the traditional style, but died of uninterrupted exhaustion. All three images feature high-quality mounting with silk brocade and ivory rollers. On the whole, very good condition. A certificate accompanies the images. The wooden box bears an inscription related to the images of the “three picture rolls” and names each one individually, for example, “Middle – Jurojin” etc.; below “Seisenin Hoin fude”.
