Biography from the Archives of askART: Born in 1900 in Minsk, Russia, he studied at the Educational Alliance Art School (founded in 1914), as well as the National Academy of Design, both in New York City. He lived in Provincetown, Massachusetts and in New York City, curating several exhibitions for five Midwestern museums, the Philadelphia Art Alliance and the Cape Cod Art Association in Hyannis, Massachusetts. Kaplan was a member of several art organizations, including the Artists League of America, Audubon Artists, and the Provincetown Art Association, where he served as honorary vice-president and trustee from 1955 on. Exhibitions: 1941, Carnegie Institute; American Artists for Victory, 1942; National Arts Club, 1946; 3 times at the Corcoran Gallery biennials between 1949 and 1953; Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Annuals betwen 1946 and 1954, also in 1958; Pepsi-Cola in 1944; American Arts Congress; Cape Cod Art Association, 1962; Audubon Artists 1967; National Academy of Design, 1969. He won numerous awards, including at the National Academy of Design, the Cape Cod Art Association, and the Audubon Artists. His work is in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Butler Institute of American Art, the Newark Museum, the University of Kentucky, and others. Earlier in his career he worked on several WPA Federal Art Projects and Treasury Relief Art Projects. Joseph Kaplan was born in Minsk, Russia and immigrated with his family to the United States at the age of 12. He married Virginia Haber in 1927 and they had no children. Kaplan studied at the Educational Alliance Art School and the Art Students League. He went to Provincetown in the mid-twenties as a student of Charles W. Hawthorne with whom he previously studied with at the National Academy of Design. Afterwards he revisited Provincetown intermittently and began to regard the Cape as his summer studio, working there each summer since 1948. In 1948 he won the first of many gold medals from the Audubon Artists at the National Academy of Design for a marine painting. He was also the first recipient of the John J. Newman Memorial Medal, given by the National Society of Painters in Casein for his Wellfleet, Low Tide.         Joseph Kaplan (1900-1980) was a painter, printmaker, photographer, and teacher who worked primarily in New York and Provincetown. He was most active in the 1940s through the 1950s. Earlier in his career he worked on several WPA Federal Art Projects and Treasury Relief Art Projects. Both are original ink on paper. One of them is signed in ballpoint. The unsigned piece has shifted slightly in the frame. Stamp on the back by a framing company in Provincetown MA. About 9 x 13 inches visible. Framed to 16 x 19.5 inches. Complimentary drop off at Qwik Pack & Ship in Eastham MA. They will do the shipping and will contact you to arrange payment for shipping costs. They are very reasonable and do a good job.
