Philip Kappel (Connecticut, 1901-1981). Signed in plate. Plate measures 9.75 in. x 7.875 in. Sheet measures 15 in. x 11.5 in. Unframed, loose and not glued or mounted. Provenance: Estate collection of William Greenbaum, Gloucester, Massachusetts, Proprietor of William Greenbaum Fine Prints. If lot is absent of a condition report one may be requested via email. Condition report is provided as an opinion only and is no guarantee as condition can be subjective. Buyer must view photographs or scans to assist in determining condition and ask further questions if so desired. Our in-house shipping department will gladly pack and ship any item that fits into a 14x14x14 inch or 30x5x24 inch or equivalent or smaller box/folio if it is not fragile or over 25lbs. Philip Kappel, American, 1901 to 1981, etching on paper, Sugaring in New England, 1970. Signed in the plate and in pencil, lower right. Titled in pencil, lower left. Framed. Stamped Henry B. Anderson and inscribed, on the backside. Philip Kappel was an American printmaker, illustrator and collector, born in Hartford, Connecticut. He studied at Pratt Institute and, for a time, studied marine art with Philip Little in Salem. He was a noted collector and authority on Chinese porcelain and Japanese art. He sailed around the world six times gathering the themes for his etchings and expanding his collection. His work is in many American museums. American Graphic Art Prints and Collectibles.

Philip Kappel — painter, illustrator, printer, writer, and lecturer — was born on February 10, 1901 in Hartford, CT and died in 1981. Kappel is best remembered for his landscapes, portraits, figures, marine, lithography, and etching. He held a teaching position with H. B. Snell, Boothbay, ME Studios, 1923 and 1924. His addresses in 1929 were 500 Fifth Avenue in New York City and, for the summer, care of Philip Little, 10 Chestnut Street, Salem, MA; and in 1935, Sarasota, FL.
