    • Grigorij Kapustin, Pair of Day and Night Seascapes, 20th C.
      Nov. 27, 2015

Grigorij Kapustin, Pair of Day and Night Seascapes, 20th C.

      Est: €2,400 - €4,800

Oil on canvas, laid down on cardboard Russia, early 20th century Grigorij Kapustin (1865-1925) – Russian marine painter Each signed in Cyrillic lower right ‘Г. Капустин’ (partly hard to read) Dimensions: each 28.5 x 43.3 cm Frame: each 40 x 53.5 cm Good condition A pair of seascapes that serve as thematic counterparts to one another by showing a day- and nighttime situation Object is regular taxed. 19% VAT is added to the purchase price for deliveries within the EU. Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 5,000 Euro Condition: The paintings are in good condition, consistent with age. The paint surface of both works is slightly rubbed, especially along the edges. The impasto application of color in both skies seems to be partly dented. The UV light inspection of the day motif reveals areas of retouching to the sky and to the lower parts, especially to the lower right corner. The night motif, however, appears to be only slightly retouchend. The canvases have been laid down on cardboard. Their dimensions are 28.5 x 43.3 cm and the matching frames measure 40 x 53.5 cm. Grigorij Kapustin (1865-1925) Grigorij Ivanovich Kapustin studied at the Art Academy in St. Petersburg and was a student of Ivan Aivazovsky in Feodosia, who deeply influenced his work. Later Grigorij Kapustin specialized in marine paintings and established himself as a recognized painter in Odessa. Around the turn of the century Kapustin was a very famous artist and his works were shown in various magazines or reproduced as postcards.
