Lily Karedada Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1937 -

Lily Karadada (also spelt Karedada) was born in the Prince Regent River area on the Mitchell Plateau, on the north west area of the Kimberley coast of Western Australia. Her parents were Wunumbal language group, and Lily’s birthplace was Wumbango Wangurr in her Father’s country, where images of the Wandjina and Bradshaw figures are found at significant sites and rock shelters. Lily was born in the bush next to a spring, and so her father named her Mindindel, which means ‘bubbles’ .

At the time of the second World War, the young Lily and husband Jack, had made the long walk to the mission settlement at Kalumburu, which was coming under bombing attack by the Japanese. So they lived in a cave for many months on the outskirts, before finally settling back into the mission community.

Lily Karadada specializes in painting the Wandjina spirit with various totems including rain storm (dotting depicting rain generated by the Wandjina), lightning, turtle, owl nightjar and cave springwater. A dotted ground is also characteristic of Lily’s depictions of totemic species and the natural features of her country. Lily Karadada has lived all her life at Kalumburu with her large extended family, who are amongst the most consistent and longest practising Aboriginal artists from this region.

The Wandjina spirit has been found in many caves and rock formations around this area and is traditionally believed to have power over the weather. Depicted without a mouth, the Wandjina is credited for being powerful enough to control the rain -- if it had a mouth the rain would never cease.

It is said that the Wandjina is the embodiment of the rain spirit and creation ancestor of the Wonnambal, Ngarinyin and Worrora peoples of the North West Kimberley. Wandjina are prolific along the walls of caves in the plateau areas of the North Kimberley coast and are unique to this region. They are always pictured using red ochre from a frontal aspect, with no mouth, large black eyes, and a slit or beak-like nose. They are usually depicted in a veil of dots which represent the blood and water mix of man and animal. According to the Dreamtime mythology, the Wandjina emerge from the clouds to bring the monsoon rain each season. As such, it is a powerful fertility figure that keeps the spirits of unborn babies in special rockpools and waterholes.

              Lily Karadada - Wandjina, 1998

              Est: $3,000 - $5,000

Widely regarded as the last of the great Wandjina painters from the Kimberley in north west Australia, Lily Karedada was born near the Prince Regent River surrounded by caves and rock galleries. Here it is believed that during the creation period the Wandjinas lay down leaving their life giving essence in the caves as they return to their home in the clouds. Wandjinas bring the monsoon rains and fertility to the land. They are usually shown either in groups or surrounded by associated totemic species. Always depicted frontally, their large eyes dominate on a mouthless face, sometimes on top of a simple robe-like body. Radiating lines around the eyes or in a halo around the head represent the lightning that heralds a storm. The first lightning strike renders their mouths tightly closed. If their mouths were left open, we are told, it would rain incessantly, carrying everything away in a torrent. The earliest transfer of these images from rock to bark was at the request of early missionaries and explorers during the 1930s. Lily’s Wanambal people were displaced from their traditional lands. Their way of life, including the regular retouching of the rock images and conveying of stories by tribal elders was forbidden by missionaries. When Kimberley art first found its way to the market during the 1970s under the guidance of Mary Macha, Lily and her husband Jack Karedada participated in the first exhibition in Perth. Bringing this unique tradition to public attention ensured its survival. The assimilation of sacred elements into the secular did not detract from its numinous character, nor its ability to mesmerise an audience. Lily’s refined style is full of subtle variations in tone. Her figures are outlined and rendered with the distinctive pointy shoulders of her particular cave area and often emerge from a veil of rain-like dots. They are accompanied by animal spirits, beautifully captured and uncluttered in character.

              Lily Karadada - Wandjina, 2000

              Est: $2,500 - $3,500

When Kimberley art first found its way to the market during the 1970s, Lily and her husband Jack Karadada participated in the first exhibition in Perth. It was thought that bringing this unique tradition to public attention would ensure its survival. The assimilation of sacred elements into the secular did not detract from its numinous character, or its ability to mesmerise an audience. Lily’s refined style, full of subtle variations in tone, depict figures which often emerge from a veil of rain-like dots. They are accompanied by animal spirits, beautifully captured in uncluttered character. Lily’s totems are the turkey, possum, and white cockatoo. She belongs to the Jirrengar owlet moiety and the Wandjina hold a special affinity with the owl. A sympathetic Wandjina spirit rescued the legendary owl, Dumbi, from a group of playful children who were pulling out its feathers. Though the Wandjina returned to the clouds, a close association remained between the two. It is said that the Wandjina spirit figure is the embodiment of the rain spirit and ancestor of the Wonnambal, Ngarinyin, and Worrora peoples of the North West Kimberley. Wandjina figures are seen decorating the walls of caves in the plateau areas along the North Kimberley coast and are unique to this region. They are always pictured using red ochre, from a frontal aspect, with no mouths, large black eyes, and a slit or beak like nose. They are usually depicted in a veil of dots which represent the blood and water mix of man and animal. Dreamtime mythology has it that the Wandjina emerged from the clouds and will return in that form.

Lily Karadada (b.c.1937) Wandjina 2007 Acrylic on canvas The Rainmaker Wandjina is in her cave with her cave rocks. She sends down the rain for people to live. She has no mouth, but when you go into her caves you can hear her whispering (the noise of wind in the caves where many of the Wandjina figures appear). This one is a proper pretty one - for luck. Provenance Comes with a Certificate of Authenticity from Our Land Gallery, Kununurra, WA, cat. no. LK1. The Professor Gordon H Packham Collection of Aboriginal Art. Gordon Packham, University of Sydney, made a substantial contribution to our knowledge and understanding of the geology of New South Wales. He assembled this collection over more than sixty years and it is reflective of the deep connection he had with Australia's natural landscape as a geologist.
