High-school's a time when a damsel experiences hormonal changes of puberty, making her restless, bored and ambivalent. The artist Fadilah Karim shows Mei Cher, her schoolmate back in her Batu Pahat hometown, as a surrogate self in a dark room in the throes of ennui, in different postures in freeze motion. The light emanating from some openings throws delicious shadows for contemplation. There is some psychological tension at play in these solitary intimate moments in what is to become Fadilah's trademark muted realism. But in later works, Fadilah Karim insinuates herself in animated dramas like a Cindy Sherman selfie, tracing her life from bachelorhood to marriage, motherhood and parenthood with her daughter Aira as a mascot always hovering somewhere in the studio. At times, the figures in Fadilah Karim's works are stuck in a perpetual state of anguish, the characters readily questioning their personal values. Fadilah Karim made history when she was given a retrospective of sorts for her only 10 years of art practice by Segaris Art Centre called, A Decade: Fadilah Karim 2010-2020. After graduating with a BFA from Universiti ITM, she had a two-month apprenticeship under Amron 'Pertarungan' Omar. Even before completing her Masters, she was exposed in her first solo, Vague, at the Pace Gallery in Petaling Jaya in 2012. Her awards include the Governor of Malacca Portrait competition, runner-up and 3rd Prize in the Tanjung Heritage competition. She was featured among 16 leading artists in Art Stage Singapore 2015. Fadilah Karim (b. 1987) Selfie, 2014

The ubiquity of smart-phones, selfies or self-portraitures, has become the rage in recording real-time, to be posted on social media such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat. In this 2014 painting aptly titled, Selfie, the lady with her pet orange parrot perched on her left shoulder, seems drawn to something on the right. The window looked closed, maybe to prevent the bird from flying away. Her blouse is in a serrated black-and-white diamond-shaped design. Selfies are deemed narcissistic as daily pictorial diaries, but after the birth of her daughter, Aira, in June 2018, she relied on the "wefies" to translate into several autobiographical paintings of her daughter "growing up" in her studio. When Segaris Art Centre gave Fadilah Karim an early survey exhibition called A Decade, Fadilah Karim, 2010-2020, many art observers were fascinated by the sustained ascension of this "upstart" seniman muda. Fadilah had a two-month mentorship under Amron Omar in 2010. She graduated with a Masters in Fine Art at UiTM (University Mara Institute of Technology) in 2013, a BFA (2010) and a diploma (2008). She also boasted of a clutch of competition awards: Portrait of the Governor of Malacca; Tanjung Heritage; and Shah Alam Open Show (Incentive Award), and had solos, Vague and Secret Lies, and was featured in Art Stage Singapore 2015.

Fadilah Karim (b. 1987) A Day At The Studio, 2020

It's difficult juggling motherhood and work, so Fadilah Karim decided to combine the two life duties, showing her cute daughter Aira, then two, as a muse and lightning rod in her painting studio. Aira was at an age when she was full of curiosity and mischief. She was focusing on a pair of binoculars instead of her mother, the fulltime artist garbed in corduroy pinafore pants, back turned to viewer. Both were barefooted, and there was an air of mystery, too, as neither showed their face in full. Though both were distracted, the bond and love are most palpable, what more the humour is also not lost. This can be inspiring to new mothers, who find themselves like a Superwoman, taking the roles of wife and home-maker, mother, daughter, in-law. Previous mother-artists lamented how they had to keep their easel in the storeroom as they lavished all their love exclusively on raising children. Fadilah Karim made heads turn when she was given a rare mini-survey exhibition by Segaris Art Centre, at White Box at Publika, Kuala Lumpur, in 2020. Called A Decade 2010-2020, it was also a preliminary retrospective with several works on show borrowed from her legion of well-known collectors. She was only 33 then! She graduated with a Diploma in Fine Art (2006), then her BFA (2010) and MFA (2013). Her slew of prizes started in 2007: 1st Prize, Malacca TYT Action Portrait and 2nd Prize in the Tanjung Heritage competition (3rd Prize in 2009). Other awards included the Incentive Award (Shah Alam Open) and HOM Art Trans Young Guns Award. Her selection for the Art Stage Singapore (2015, 2016), Art Taipei (2015), Art Gwangju (2015), Art Bazaar Berlin (2014), Art Basel Hong Kong (2017), and Art Expo Malaysia (2013-2015) helped boost her international stature. For two months in 2010, she was mentored by the ‘Pertarungan' icon Amron Omar. Her solos were Vague; Secret Lies and Folds & Creases, her first Singapore foray, at Gajah Gallery no less.

As the title suggests, there is something anxious, even hallucinated about the female figure in double image looking towards right. It is from Fadilah Karimâs first solo titled Vague at the Pace Gallery (now Nadine Fine Art) in Petaling Jaya in 2012. She was accorded another solo, Secret Lies, by Taksu Kuala Lumpur, in 2016. Much has been said about her techniques transformation after a two-month intensive mentorship by the Silat Painting sifu Amron Omar in 2010. Her mostly female figures are imbued with an enigmatic and inscrutable quality and often placed in a somewhat mysterious setting. The figures in Fadilah Karimâs works are sometimes stuck in a perpetual state of anguish, the characters readily questioning their personal values. Fadilah Karim is one of the new wave female artists portraying âacted selfiesâ, a kind of a room cam inviting viewers to voyeur into a womanâs private world. In this work from her first solo, Vague, at Pace Gallery (now Nadine Fine Art) in 2012, a wraith of a female form is shown in an indecision between staying put indoor, her telling book beside, and breaking out of the glass window or the doorway in the background. Angular walls on the right hint at physical obstacles. The paradox of indecisiveness / loneliness is one of Fadilahâs favourite aesthetic devices. It's interesting how titles can tilt the way and range of interpretations. Fadilah Karim is a highly prominent young figurative artist who's known for her highly nuanced works using the female figure, often in dark clothes, and in role play and with ambient settings. This work from Fadilah's second exhibition, Secret Lies, at Taksu Kuala Lumpur in April 2016, shows a girl, back to viewer, staring at a wall of darkness. Should she tarry and mop or step further into the unknown? What has she got to lose? It's a kind of Alfred J. Prufrock decision we take daily. Or it could just be a recalcitrant student being sent to stand in a corner facing the wall by the class teacher. But really, it's her skilled handling of her concept and composition, with the play of light, shadows and fine brushstrokes, with subtle reveal-and-conceal manipulations, that's the thing. Fadilah Karim, mentored by Amron Omar for two months in 2010, gave notice of her potential when she clinched 1st Prize in the Malacca TYT Action Portrait competition in 2007, a year before she graduated with a Diploma in Fine Art at the UiTM campus in Lendu, Alor Gajah. She went on to achieve her BFA (2010) and MFA (2013). In 2007, she also took 2nd Prize in the Tanjung Heritage competition and in 2009, the 3rd Prize. She won the Incentive Award in the Shah Alam Open in 2008, and HOM Art Trans' Young Guns Award in 2013, a year after her first solo, Vague, at Pace Gallery, Petaling Jaya. She featured in a double header with the Philippines' Guenivere Decena in the Mystery exhibition at HOM Art Trans in 2014. She has taken part in Art Stage Singapore in 2015 and 2016; Art Taipei in 2015; Art Gwangju in 2015; Art Bazaar Berlin in 2014; and Art Expo Malaysia from 2013 to 2015.

Studing lying down on a hard surface is hardly the best recipe to prepare for examinations, as one tends to doze off into ‘dreamland.’ All I Have to Do Is Dream, the song by the Everly Brothers, will probably play in the head like some kind of opiated lullaby. There is the sense of abandon, and even sensuality, in Fadilah Karim’s image of a girl in a satin nightie, but the sequential tilt – either way – is not that of her subject suffering from the usual vertigo effects of high anxiety and physical discomfort. The feminine touches in the dress, pillow and skin tones contrast with the hard facts which the girl has to digest from the stack of opened hard-cover books probably for cross-referencing. There seems to be some kind of ritual coquetry, from the pose of being lost in thought while lying down, to arching the body to look behind and sitting up with knees to chest, and transfixing the viewer with her gaze as she tilts her face, as if challenging…Fadilah Karim graduated with a Masters in Fine Art, Majoring in Painting, at the UiTM (University Mara Institute of Technology), Jalan Othman, Petaling Jaya, in 2013, a Bachelor’s in 2010, and a diploma from the UiTM Malacca in 2008. Fadilah Karim is a widely celebrated young artist noted for her enigmatic, inscrutable figures in a melancholic and mysterious setting. Her mastery of the figures was helped by a two-month mentorship under 'Silat Master' Amron Omar. This work, Imbalance, of a disorientated, schizophrenic girl whose picture is split in the middle and dis-aligned to show two ‘actions’ and suggest some psychological flaw, was shown at Galeri Chandan in 2015. They are two different pictures of the same person, with the one on the left with eyes open and staring at viewer, while the other’s eyes are looking down with the eyelids down too, and the slightly tilted head supported by her left hand in akimbo. Only the rabbit, despite the dislodged plahe as it is from the same picture, remains calm.Fadilah graduated with a Masters in Fine Art, Majoring in Painting, at the UiTM (University Mara Institute of Technology) Shah Alam, in 2013, Bachelor’s in 2010, and a diploma from the UiTM Malacca in 2008. She held her first solo, Vague, at the Pace Gallery (now Nadine Fine Arts) in 2012, and her most recent being Secret Lies at Taksu Gallery, KL, in April-May 2016. She was featured among 16 Malaysian figurative artists in a special exhibition in Art Stage Singapore 2015.

Fadilah Karim is recognised as one of Malaysia’s most talented figurative painters, exhibiting technical virtuosity in the medium of drawing and painting. Presented here is a momentary glimpse of a young lady captured in transient motion. The figure is composed in a unique cinematic mode and is imbued with an enigmatic expression of movement in space and time. Fadilah Karim obtained her Masters in Fine Art & Technology (Major in painting) at Universiti Institute Teknologi MARA in 2013. She held her first solo exhibition titled Vague at Pace Gallery, Selangor (2012).
