Gertrude Käsebier Sold at Auction Prices

Photographer, b. 1852 - d. 1934

(b Des Moines, Iowa, 1852; d New York, New York, 1934) American photographer. Kasebier attended the Pratt Institute in New York where she studied painting from 1889 to 1893. In 1894 she continued her studies in France and Germany through the following year. She then began to pursue an interest in photography and opened her own portrait studio in New York City. Her most frequently depicted subjects include Robert Henri, Auguste Rodin, Standford White, Evelyn Nesbit and mothers and children. These portraits were recognized in the Philadelphia Photographic Salons as well as numerous other important photographic exhibitions. In 1902, Kasebier founded the Photo-Secession with Alfred Stieglitz, Clarence H. White and Edward Steichen; the following year, her photograph, ‘Blessed Art Thou Among Women’, appeared in the 1903 inaugural issue of Camera Work. Resigning from the Photo-Secession in 1912, Kasebier visited (John Murray) Anderson's family in St. Johns, Newfoundland. She grappled with the challenge of Newfoundland's dim, gray light, making pictures whose stylistic departures reflected her flexible nature. When Newfoundland's weird light did not conform to her tonal approach, she adopted a more linear, architectonic style; an angular, restless quality that may have been induced by Cubist paintings shown at 291 or by Coburn's increasingly geometric style. Following the closure of her portrait studio in the early 1920s, the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences held a retrospective of her work in 1929. Kasebier was involved with the Pictorial Photographers of America from the 1920s into the early 1930s. She is known for altering her negatives and prints through retouching and rephotographing and usually printed in platinum or gum bichromate emulsions.

ASG# GSK/1111. In 1898 New York photographer Gertrude Kasebier (1852-1934) embarked on a deeply personal project, creating a set of prints that rank among the most compelling of her celebrated body of work. Kasebier was on the threshold of a career that would establish her as both the leading portraitist of her time and an extraordinary art photographer. Her new undertaking was inspired by viewing the grand parade of Buffalo Bill's Wild West troupe en route to Madison Square Garden for several weeks of performances. Kasebier had spent her childhood on the Great Plains, and retained many vivid, happy memories of playing with nearby Native American children. She quickly sent a letter to William "Buffalo Bill" Cody (1846-1917), requesting permission to photograph in her studio the Sioux Indians traveling with the show. Within weeks, Kasebier began a unique and special project photographing the Indian men, women, and children formally and informally. Friendships developed, and her photography of these Native Americans continued for more than a decade. Credit: https://americanhistory.si.edu/collections/search/object/nmah_1005374

6 5/8 x 4 7/8 inch toned gelatin silver print, on a black mount, ca. 1895. Her daughter, also named Gertrude, is shown in a loving mutual gaze with her future husband Charles O’Malley. Mothers and children were important subjects of her photographs. One of her children continued her photography business after her death. The love between the couple is in contrast with Gertrude’s own unhappy marriage. This has her blind stamp on the bottom, verso, with an inscription in an unknown hand, giving her daughter’s maiden name and “Now—O’Malleyl” that was written soon after the wedding. It is an intimate family photograph rather than for public show, but still has her blind stamp. Provenance: George Rinhart to the consignor through a dealer.

Gertrude Kasebier, St. John Newfoundland, Canada, 1912

        Est: $1,500 - $1,800

Gertrude Kasebier, St. John Newfoundland, Canada, 1912, Platinum print, 6.5" x 9.5". Artist Biography: “Why should not the camera as a medium for the interpretation of art as understood by painters, sculptors, and draughtsmen, command respect?,” the photographer Gertrude Käsebier asked. Trained at the progressive Pratt Institute in the late 19th century, she quickly established herself as a pictorial photographer—part of a movement devoted to the medium as an art form—and focused on portraits and themes such as motherhood. To evoke an ethereal atmosphere, and distinguish her prints from those of commercial photographers and amateur snap shooters, Käsebier combined darkroom manipulation with forceful compositions and a delicate tonal range. Informed by her childhood on the Great Plains, Käsebier photographed Dakota Sioux performers who toured with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West spectacle at her New York studio. These sittings—which resulted in portraits of figures such as Joe Black Fox (c. 1899)—aspired to sensitive portrayals of individuals. But they also attest to the complex power dynamics by which these performers had to conform to preconceived ideas about what constituted an authentic identity. As a principal member of the Photo-Secession group of pictorialists, founded in 1902 by Alfred Steiglitz, Käsebier contributed work to their influential journal Camera Work (as well as the earlier Camera Notes). Käsebier formally left the group in 1912 and later helped to found several professional organizations. “I earn my own money. I pay my own bills. I carry my own license,” she said of the work she did in her studio, which was known for its comfortable atmosphere and understated decor. Sitters included actress Evelyn Nesbit, architect Stanford White, author Mark Twain, artist Robert Henri, and photographers F. Holland Day and Edward Steichen. Käsebier recalled a sitting with sculptor Auguste Rodin: “When he knew he was going to be photographed, he’d stiffen…. I caught him on one of his moments. He was relaxed and brooding. He didn’t know he had been photographed until it was all over.” Käsebier remained influential until her death in 1934, even as tastes shifted toward more mobile and less manipulated images. Steichen, the pictorialist-turned-modernist who would become a curator at MoMA, remained devoted to her work, and photographers who worked or apprenticed in Käsebier’s studio include Alice Austin, Alice Boughton, Alvin Landon Coburn, and the sisters Williamina and Grace Parrish. Their respect may reflect her ethos: “The key to artistic photography is to work out your own thoughts,” Käsebier said. “If a thing is good it will survive.” (MoMA)

GERTRUDE KASEBIER Masterpiece Platinum Raking Garden

        Est: $5,000 - $8,000

GERTRUDE KASEBIER, Raking the Garden, 1904, 7.5x3.5" platinum print, Printed c. 1904, inscribed in pencil on mount verso: ASG# GSK/1095. This beautiful rare vintage platinum print shows Kasebier's nephew raking. A classic view and a beautiful print. Gertrude Kasebier (1852-1934) was born in Fort Des Moines, Iowa. Gertrude was passionate about painting and drawing from early childhood. When she was twenty-two, she married Eduard. Kasebier longed to be an artist and after her children reached adolescence, she enrolled in the Pratt Institute to study drawing and painting. By 1894 she had added photography to her techniques and that year won two photography contests. On a year-long trip to Europe she realized that photography was her vocation. While in Germany she studied with Hermann Wilhelm Vogel, the same chemist that Stieglitz had worked with. She opened her own studio at age thirty-six in an effort to generate income and further her career as a photographer. She began exhibiting her photographs at the Boston Camera Club in 1896 and at the Pratt Institute. Kasebier became acquainted with Alfred Stieglitz who admired her work for its independent artistic expression and promoted it in his publication Camera Notes. He also organized solo exhibitions of her work at the Camera Club of New York. By 1901 her photographs had been exhibited in Paris and London, and she became the first woman elected to the Linked Ring, a group of art photographers. She traveled to Paris with Edward Steichen, and photographed August Rodin. She was one of the founding members of the Photo-Secession group, of which Stieglitz was the leader. The first issue of his Camera Work, released in 1902, contained six illustrations and two articles by Kasebier. Motherhood and portraiture were Kasebier's favorite themes. She helped elevate the photographic portrait to the status of an art form.

The most famous portrait from these sessions is "The Red Man." The Red Man as Posed by Takes Enemy, Sioux Indian Credit: https://www.loc.gov/resource/ppmsca.12062/ Gertrude Kasebier (1852-1934) was born in Fort Des Moines, Iowa. On a yearlong trip to Europe she realized that photography was her vocation. While in Germany she studied with Hermann Wilhelm Vogel, the same chemist that Stieglitz had worked with. She opened her own studio at age thirty-six in an effort to bring in income and further her career as a photographer. She began exhibiting her photographs at the Boston Camera Club in 1896 and at the Pratt Institute.
