Paintings by Hermann Katsch fetch up to 16,000 eruros This portrait of a Tunisian woman in traditional clothes, jewelry and tattoos was created by the artist Hermann Katsch and is dated in the year 1885, when he traveled to North Africa or probably shortly after his return. As a consequence of sensational archeological discoveries, numerous expeditions by scientists, artists and writers, and last but not least prompted by the political and military actions of William II, a great Orientalist fascination was established in Germany. The work is signed dated and inscribed 'H. Katsch / Tunis 1885' and is in age-appropriate condition. It is painted on canvas, which was formerly laid down on card, verso with its remains. It shows some retouching, otherwise overall of good impression. The Stretcher measures 86 x 66 cm. The framed dimensions are 100 x 79 cm. The frame shows slight signs of wear. Hermann Katsch (1853-1924) Hermann Katsch began his artistic training at the Academy of Arts in Munich. After his artistic debut at the Academy of Arts in Munich, Katsch went on a study trip to Italy and Tunis in 1883/85. Impressed by the different cultures and customs he had seen on his journey, Katsch he continued to paint beautiful representations of the Orient. In 1888, he exhibited his pieces at the Munich Glass Palace, followed be the Great Berlin Art Exhibition. Hermann Katsch was also very success as a decorative painter and was commissioned for several monumental wall paintings in Berlin. For example, he executed an impressive fresco at the Theater des Westens. During the First World War, Katsch became a war correspondent. His works fetch up to 16,000 Euros at international auctions The present portrait of a lady was painted by the artist Hermann Katsch in 1885, when the painter was travelling in North Africa, or shortly after. The painting shows the young woman in three-quarters profile, in the blue and white lined garments of a traditional costume. The artist took great care in the rendering of the sitter's expression. As a consequence of sensational archeological discoveries, numerous expeditions by scientists, artists and writers, and last but not least prompted by the political and military actions of William II, a great Orientalist fascination was established in Germany. The work appears in appealing condition according to its age. It is painted on canvas which has been laid down on cardboard. The right cheek of the sitter shows an older retouching. The paint shows light framing marks. The work is signed and dated "H. Katsch 1885." lower left. The beautiful wooden frame is gilded and only shows minimal traces of age and use.       Jüngling einer Nymphe Wasser aus einer Muschel reichend. Aquarell auf Karton. 46,5 x 38,6 cm. Unten rechts signiert und datiert "H. Katsch (18)97". Der Historienmaler und Porträtist Katsch studierte zunächst an der Münchener Akademie, wo er Schüler von Johann Leonhard Raab war. Er schloß Freundschaft mit Karl Stauffer-Bern und folgte ihm nach Berlin. Katsch unternahm Reisen nach Italien und Tunis und stelle einige Male auf den Berliner Akademieausstellungen aus. In den 90er Jahren - zur Entstehungszeit des Aquarells - war er indessen hauptsächlich als Dekorationsmaler in Berlin tätig; beispielsweise schuf er das Deckenfresko im Theater des Westens.
