Together with Edith Behring and Fayga Ostrower, she belongs to the generation of Brazilian women engravers that the art historian Geraldo Edson de Andrade described as the “matriarchy of engraving in Brazil”. Katz began her career in the 1940s, painting primarily portraits and landscapes of Rio de Janeiro. From 1946 she took woodcutting lessons from the Austrian graphic artist Axl Leskoschek. From 1947 to 1950 Katz attended the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes in Rio de Janeiro with a focus on painting. She then obtained a licentiate in drawing from the Faculty of Arts at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Persuaded by a friend, the artist Poty Lazzarotto, Katz studied metal engraving with Carlos Oswald at the Rio de Janeiro School of Arts and Crafts. She continued to engage in metal engraving throughout the 1950s, but switched to woodcuts and lithography for most of her career, returning to engraving only in the 1980s. After moving to São Paulo in 1951, Katz taught painting and printmaking at the São Paulo Art Museum from 1952 to 1955 and at the Armando Álvares Penteado Foundation from 1953 to 1963. From the late 1940s to the mid-1950s she devoted herself primarily to woodcut and linocut art. She made figurative prints with strong social appeal in the style of social realism, portraying marginalized members of the Brazilian population, including migrants, agricultural workers and slum dwellers. In the 1960s, Katz turned to a more abstract style, which she continued for the rest of her career. She dedicated herself to painting and drawing and began studying color through screen printing. Katz engraved up to five matrices and applied up to eight different colors to create multiple impressions of a single print. In the 1970s, Katz began working with lithography, which became her preferred medium. In 1965, Katz became a professor at the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of São Paulo, where she also studied. Her master's thesis from 1979 was the first scientific work at the University of São Paulo to be presented in the form of a series of screen prints. Her doctoral thesis from 1982, consisting of 13 lithographs, was the first non-verbal dissertation presented at her institute. Deteriorating health led Katz to give up printmaking and concentrate on watercolor painting.
