      ANDRENE KAUFFMAN (American 1905-1993) Dancing Woman- circa 1930 Oil on masonite Signed lower left and signed and titled on verso. Additionally there are remnants of three exhibition labels on verso including one from the Carnegie Institute 49 inches x 35 inches (contained in a custom decorated artist's frame). Provenance: Deaccessioned from a Midwest Institute A long-time artist and art teacher in Chicago, Andrene Kauffman was on the faculty of the Art Institute of Chicago from 1927 to 1967, serving as a professor of drawing and painting and chairman of the Fine Arts division. In 1967 upon her retirement, she was awarded a professorship with honors---Emeritus. She exhibited in 25 of the exhibitions of the Institute and also exhibited in New York at the Whitney Museum, the Museum of Modern Art and Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh. Her painting, "The Stranger," is in the collection of the Art Institute. Kauffman was a WPA muralist during the Depression, completing about 30 murals including several for Hirsch High school and Burbank School in Chicago. During World War II, she worked for one year in the engineering division of United Air Lines in Chicago. From 1955 to 1969, she painted ceramic tile murals of non-violent leaders such as Jesus, Gandhi, and Moses at the Third Unitarian Church of Chicago, now designated a landmark.
