Angelica Kauffmann Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Etcher, Miniature painter, Porträtmaler, Historical-scenes painter, b. 1741 - d. 1807

Artist Angelica Kauffman was considered an accomplished portraitist at an early age, with church bishops and nobles as the majority of her subjects. Her father, a well-regarded muralist, trained her, and she traveled as his assistant. A notable period in her training was the three years she spent in Italy where she visited galleries and copied the works of the Italian masters.

During her 17 years in London, artist Angelica Kauffmann was influenced by Sir Joshua Reynolds and his unique portraitist style. With her favorable reception by the royal family, she became one of the two women founders of, and an exhibitor at, the Royal Gallery.

Because she preferred working as a history painter, Angelica Kauffman moved back to Rome during the early 1780s. Angelica Kauffman portraits have been highly sought after for centuries. Admirers of historical paintings and portraiture will find a wide selection of vintage and contemporary portraits for auction or for sale through Invaluable.

ENGLISH ITALIAN COLOR ENGRAVINGS BY ANGELICA KAUFFMAN

                Est: $100 - $150

Angelica Maria Anna Kauffmann, English, Italian, Swiss, 1741 to 1807, a pair of color engravings on paper depicting Neoclassical scenes with cherubs in the gardens. Each is signed in the plate, lower left. Engraved by Pietro Bettelini, Italian, Swiss, 1763 to 1829. Inscribed in the plate, lower right. Framed. Angelica Kauffmann is known for History and portrait painting. Born in Switzerland, Angelica Kauffmann became one of the most successful artists of late 18th Century England and Italy, especially noted for history painting and portraiture. In fact, she was the only artist who declined the invitation of Catherine the Great to come to Saint Petersburg to develop the Hermitage collection, the reason being that Kauffmann was too busy with commissions. Historically her accomplishments are quite amazing because she lived at a time when women were not allowed access to professional male models. A testimony to the high regard in which she was held by her contemporaries is that Charles Willson Peale, one of America's most famous artists, named one of his daughters Angelica Kauffman Peale.

Dimensions:(Canvas) 40.5 in. (H) x 31.5 in. (W)(Frame) 51.25 in. (H) x 41.5 in. (W)James Hugh Smith Barry, eldest son of Hon. John Smith-Barry (1725-84) and his wife Dorothy, elder daughter and co-heiress of Hugh Smith of Weald Hall (Essex), born 25 December 1748 and baptised at Great Budworth, 18 January 1748/9. Educated at Eton (1762-67) and Brasenose College, Oxford (matriculated 1767; created MA 1770) and then travelled in Europe and the Middle East, 1771-76. In Italy, he visited Rome, Naples and Sicily before travelling on with a group of friends including Lord Winchilsea and Thomas Dashwood, on a two-year tour to Malta, Constantinople and Egypt. On returning to Italy he saw Capua and Florence. During his travels he bought works of art, classical sculpture and medals 'on a lavish scale but with little discernment', although his collection included a number of important works, including the Jenkins vase (now in the National Museum of Wales). His travels were curtailed when his father stopped payment of his bills and he returned to England via Dresden and Paris in considerable debt. He travelled again in 1779, visiting Florence, Rome (where Angelica Kauffman painted his portrait) and Naples. In 1781 he bought a statue of Zeus from the Villa d'Este for Ј600, which was probably his most important purchase (now in the Getty Museum in California). After inheriting his father's estates and considerable wealth in 1784 he became increasingly reclusive and lived chiefly at Fota, although his collections were divided mainly between Belmont and Marbury. J.L. de Bougrenet de la Tocnaye, who visited him at Fota in 1796-97 recorded that 'his riches have so surfeited him and disgusted him with the world that he has almost totally retired from society, and lives rather a melancholy life in his island'. He was High Sheriff of Cheshire, 1795-96, but otherwise took no part in public affairs. He was unmarried, but had acknowledged issue, by his mistress Ann Tanner (b. c. 1756), for whom he rented Swerford Park (Oxon), where the children were brought up.

Painted in Rome, these two works depict biblical scenes from the Old Testament relating to two kings of Israel. In the first work King Jeroboam’s wife is shown in distress after being told by the prophet Ahlijah of her son’s impending death. The second depicts the moment that the prophet Nathan points an accusing finger at King David, who was guilty of plotting the murder of his wife’s former husband, Uriah, so that he could marry her. Both scenes are enacted with high drama and demonstrate Kaufmann’s compositional prowess. Initially these works were part of a set of four, which were commissioned in 1791 by one of Kauffman’s greatest patrons, George Bowles. Bowles owned as many as fifty works by Kauffman and supported her throughout her career. Our thanks to Dr. Bettina Baumgärtel, head of the Angelika Kauffman Research Project, for her help in the preparation of this catalogue entry. Condition Report: overall: 59 x 64cm and nathan said unto David: The surface is covered with a fine craquelure. There is a small repaired scratch to the upper right edge. In generally good order, ready to hang. The prophet Ahlijah foretells to the wife of King Jeroboam the death of her son Abijah: The canvas has been lined. There is a fine craquelure covering the surface. To the lower edge, centre right, there is a small square scratch, below the seated figure. See illustration. Under UV light - as above, there is a thick layer of varnish which obscures much of the surface. However, there are some minor spots of retouching in places, with some evidence of infilling to the craquelure to the lower left quarter of the work. Both come with the original plaque.

Angelica Kauffman RA (Swiss, 1740-1807) Angelica Kauffman RA (Swiss, 1740-1807) Portrait of Louise Henrietta Campbell (1772-1829), seated full-length, in a white dress holding a pencil and drawing oil on canvas 75.5 x 63cm Provenance: probably until 1948 Rockcliffe Hall, Darlington, collection of Lord Southampton (see Manners/Williamson); Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London 15 November 1989, lot 40; Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 1 January 1995, lot 22; Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 28 November 2002, lot 167. Literature: Lady Victoria Manners and Dr G C Williamson, 'Angelica Kauffman, R.A.', 1824, p. 210. Lady Louise Henrietta Campbell was married to James Scarlett (1769-1844). They were introduced through her brother, Peter Campbell, who studied with Scarlett at Trinity College, Cambridge. Scarlett was a fierce barrister, a leader of the Inner Temple and served as a Member of Parliament. In 1834, after time in office as Attorney General, he became Chief Baron of the Exchequer and was made a peer the following year; he was the first Baron Abinger. The couple had five children and appear to have lived happily together. Scarlett’s memoir eulogised Lady Louise Henrietta, and an excerpt reads, ‘I lived with her in uninterrupted comfort and happiness from the time of our marriage to the month of March 1829 and have lived ever since to lament her loss’ (Scarlett, 1877). While traditionally identified as a portrait of Louise Henrietta Campbell, Dr Bettina Baumgärtel notes that Campbell didn't marry James Scarlett until 1792. The portrait type is typical of Kauffman‘s 1770s paintings executed in London. The prototype for the interior with a female seated figure enjoying a fine pastime, dressed in a white gown whose delicate fabric is embroidered with small fleur-de-lys of gold thread, is Kauffman's 'Morning Amusement' in the Hermitage, Saint Petersburg, from the early 1770s. One would date the portrait accordingly, were it not for the sitter's life dates. Since she was only born in 1772 and the portrait probably shows a woman of at least twenty, the portrait would have to have been painted in Italy in the early 1790s. Since this type of portrait only occurs in England and not in the artist's late work, it is Baumgärtel's opinion that the question of the sitter's definite identification must remain open. Our thanks to Dr. Bettina Baumgärtel, head of the Angelika Kauffman Research Project, for her help in the preparation of this catalogue entry. Condition Report: overall: 94.5 x 82cm The canvas has been lined, with what appears to be a later strip lining. The surface is covered with a fine craquelure which has contracted in places. Under UV light, extensive infilling is apparent to the craquelure. This is mainly to the background, with more minimal intervention to the figure and hair. There is a more general area of retouching to the lower right of the skirts. Overall, the restoration has been well executed and colour matched, and the painting is presented ready to hang, in an gilt frame.
