      Est: $1,000 - $2,000

Lee Lufkin Kaula (American, 1865-1957) Portrait of Captain John H. Gresham 1907 oil on canvas signed and dated Lee Lufkin Kaula / 1907, lower left 23 1/2 x 19 1/2 inches. John Heslop Gresham (1835-1905), depicted here in his Grand Army of the Republic uniform, attained the rank of captain in the 56th Regiment of the New York Infantry National Guard, Company A. The regiment was originally mustered in for 30 days of service on June 18, 1863, under the command Colonel John Q. Adams. During this time, Gresham served as a sergeant and left the state with his regiment for Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, attached to the 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, Department of the Susquehanna. After seeing action in a skirmish near Oyster Point, Pennsylvania on June 29th, the regiment was mustered out of United States service in Brooklyn by late July. The following year, Gresham's regiment was mustered into service once more for an additional 100 days on August 2, 1864, in Elmira, New York. This time, the regiment was tasked with duties in Elmira, likely at the Elmira Prison, originally a barracks for Camp Rathbun that was later converted to a prison camp in the summer of 1864. Elmira Prison housed the greatest number of Confederate POWs, exceeding its capacity by threefold. After the war, Gresham wed Martha Boorum on May 22, 1869. The couple settled in Brooklyn, where Gresham worked at a stationary store, and they had three children together. Provenance: Leland Little Auctions, Hillsborough, North Carolina, The Summer Quarterly Auction, June 17, 2017, Lot 437.

Lee Lufkin Kaula (American, 1865-1957) Old Stone Church Interior, La Chapelle, 1897 Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 28 3/4 x 23 3/8 in. (73.0 x 59.5 cm), framed. Condition: Paint losses, craquelure, small area with lifting, surface grime. Exhibitions: Lee Lufkin Kaula 1865-1957, Post Impressionist of the Boston School, James R. Bakker Antiques and Robert E. Cleaves, Groton, Massachusetts, March 9-23, 1974. N.B. On July 20, 1897, William Kaula, future husband of the artist, wrote in his diary, "Miss L. is painting an excellent interior of the old stone church at La Chapelle. It is an old stained-whitewashed interior with old wooden pews, stone floors and green mould [sic] creeping up the side-walls. With the addition of a few figures, the priest, choir-boy, and a few old women it will make an interesting work as it is painted with a pleasing simplicity and good feeling for subdued color. Miss L. has none of the insipid sentiment about the picturesque, and has no desire to paint the ancedotal picture- the bane of art students in Paris or France." (Excerpted from the hand-written journal of William J. Kaula, July 20, 1897, while sojourning in Crécy, France, pp. 176-177.) The journal entry also mentions "Miss S," presumably Claire Shuttleworth, with whom Lee Lufkin traveled to Paris. Lee Lufkin and William Kaula were married in 1902. Accompanying this lot are a notarized letter of authenticity signed by James R. Bakker and Robert E. Cleaves dated March 31, 1974, and five volumes of William J. Kaula's hand-written diaries from October 13, 1896, through July 25, 1903.
