        FRANTISEK KAVAN (Czech / Bohemian 1866 - 1941) - Landscape with willows

        Est: -

1910 | technique: oil on cardboard | 40 x 51 cm | signature: bottom left | framed under glass Lot description Frantisek Kavan was an important Czech landscape painter whose work is characterized by a realistic depiction of nature. This painting depicts a peaceful landscape with dominant willow trees, typical of the Czech countryside. Here, Kavan masterfully captures the atmosphere of a calm autumn or spring day, when the trees are bare of leaves and the landscape is illuminated by soft light. His precise work with colors and details testify to a deep relationship with the Czech nature. The painting is a perfect example of Kavan's ability to capture both the melancholy and the beauty of a rural environment.

        FRANTISEK KAVAN (Czech / Bohemian 1866 - 1941) - Early Spring

        Est: -

around 1915 | technique: oil on cardboard | 50 x 65 cm | signature: bottom right | framed Lot description Frantisek Kavan was an important Czech landscape painter whose work focused on realistic and lyrical depictions of the Czech landscape. The painting "Early Spring" captures the typical motif of the transition from winter to spring, when the landscape slowly wakes up and takes on warmer tones. Kavan's attention to detail is characteristic, especially in the way he captures the structure of the tree and the changeability of the sky. The tree itself, standing alone in the landscape, creates an impression of melancholy, but at the same time, hope for the coming of spring. The work radiates peace and harmony, typical of Kavan's work, which often reflected his personal connection to nature and his native region. The painting "Predjari" is an important example of Kavan's ability to masterfully depict the changing mood of nature in different seasons and offers a glimpse of his characteristic style in a combination of lyricism and realism.

FRANTISEK KAVAN (Czech / Bohemian 1866 - 1941) - Early spring in the Highlands

        Est: -

around 1920 | technique: oil on cardboard | 50 x 40 cm | signature: bottom left "Cavan in respect" | framed Lot description Frantisek Kavan, an important Czech painter, is known for his intimate and sensitive depictions of the Czech landscape. His work "Prespring in the Highlands" is an excellent example of his ability to capture subtle transitions in nature, especially the delicate period between winter and spring. The painting depicts a calm and vast meadow with a narrow stream running through it and bare trees rising against the horizon. The soft shades of grass and sky reflect the gentle warmth of the first rays of spring, signaling the end of winter's grip. Kavan's technique, characterized by free brushstrokes and sensitive use of colors, brings to the fore the quiet beauty of the Czech countryside. This painting exemplifies his mastery of expressing the atmosphere and emotional resonance of the natural world, making it a valuable addition to any collection of Czech landscape painting.

František Kaván is valued above all as a painter - poet of the Czech landscape. His work is a sonnet for all seasons in the Czech landscape, where he repeatedly went and sought moral support for his artistic expression. He avoided the city but loved the water. His departure to the countryside heralded a long and fruitful period of creation, when he separated himself from people and accepted as his closest companion the peace, modesty and simple life of the village, where his artistic challenge was horizons, gusts of wind, blooming meadows and blankets of snow. Published: Zachař, M.: František Kaván - Dílo. S.V.U. Mánes, Prague, 2018. Inventory number 878. Technique: oil on paper on cardboard, Signed: sign. lower left: Kaván dedicates Flooded meadows in the evening

From the opinion of the PhD. M.Sc. Michael Zachař: "According to family tradition, the painting by František Kaván would have to be from the time before he entered Mařák's studio at the Prague Academy in 1890. It could have been created in the vicinity of his native cottage near Jilemnice, which corresponds to the nature of the terrain and the strikingness of the concept of the landscape, far removed from the romanticism of the time cliché. Similar oils are owned by the Krkonoše Museum in Jilemnice and others are published in my list of the painter's works - cat. no. 20, 38, 39, 70. This may be the discovery of one of Kaván's earliest plein airs." Technique: oil on canvas on cardboard, Signed: unsigned

From the expert opinion of PhDr. M.Sc. Michael Zachař: "Academic painter František Kaván belongs to the leading representatives of the "Mařák family", i.e. students of the landscape school of professor Julius Mařák at the Prague Academy at the end of the 19th century. I classify the painting under review among similar ones already published from around 1925. It is a sensitive plein-air painting with a distinct with exposed vegetation, which is a motif accompanying Kaván from his youth. The painting, preserved in good technical condition, represents a quality example of Kaván's mature landscape work of the 1920s. From the expert opinion of PhDr. M.Sc. Michael Zachař: "We consider Kaván's paintings from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries to be the most masterful works ever. Some time around 1901, the plein air piece assessed here was created a short distance outside Jičín of considerable technical and expressive maturity. In the distant perspective, the horizon is accentuated by the roof of the Valdice Baroque church with a slender by a saint. The mood is spun from a few valeres of green, ocher brown and gray-blue colors. I rate the discovery of a hitherto unknown artistically suggestive work as significant and contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the rarest section of the author's work." From the expert opinion of PhDr. M.Sc. Michaela Zachař: "The painting under review was apparently created during wanderings in nature according to reality, and the painter dealt with a naturalistic conception of materials, terrain, vegetation in a well-perceived light mood. It is an early work from the spring of 1894, where Kaván already has a greater experience of plein air work and considerable self-assuredness in the expression, which already surpasses Chittussi. This is a collector's quality plein air from the Giant mountains wanderings, part of the former high-quality First Republic Hejn's collection from Poděbrady (no. 112)." A calm winter landscape with nearby draws is a harmonious work featuring the typical style of František Kaván, the author of numerous paintings showing the transforming Czech countryside during the changing seasons. The winter landscape is dated to quieter period in Kaván’s career, when he returned to Realism. Kaván’s work was influenced by his studies in Julius Mařák’s landscape painting studio, where he started in 1889. He lived alone and led a humble life, and his realistic depictions of the landscape soon surpassed the work of his classmates. Influenced by the group around Moderní revue, he temporarily diverged from Realism in 1895 and switched to Symbolism and decadence. An expert assessment of the work has been prepared by PhDr. Mgr. Michael Zachař. Technique: Oil on cardboard, Signed: Lower left "Kaván"
