Joseph Malachy Kavanagh RHA (1856-1918) Old Dublin, Marrowbone Lane Oil on canvas, 70 x 92.6cm (27½ x 36½) Signed Provenance: Mrs. M. Hanlon, Dublin; and later in the collection of John P. Reihill, Deepwell, Blackrock, Co. Dublin Exhibited: RHA Annual Exhibition, Dublin, 1918, Cat. No. 20 Literature: Joseph Malachy Kavanagh, Ethna Waldron, The Capuchin Annual, page 324, full page illustration page 322 Although older than Osborne, Kavanagh's career seemed to run side by side with that of Walter Osborne even before they set off together with Nathaniel Hill to study at Antwerp under Verlat in 1881. He is thought to have come to Brittany with Osborne in late 1882/early 1883 and painted in Quimperle, Dinan and Pont-Aven very similar subjects to those of Hill and Osborne. Writing in 1949 Thomas Mc Greevy, former Director of the National Gallery refers to Kavanagh in an article entitled ''Fifty years of Irish Painting'' :- '' Kavanagh had a wider range and more solid qualities than Osborne. But neither Henry Allan nor Kavanagh is sufficiently well represented in our public collections for it to be possible to form an adequate estimate of their achievement''. This is probably as true today as when it was written in 1949 . Ethna Waldron wrote of this work in 1968 :- In 1918, the year of his death , Kavanagh exhibited ''Old Marrowbone Lane'' at the Academy , a painting with his characteristic pinkish tinge in the stonework . This work is in a private collection in Dublin and the owner had for many years regarded it, quite understandably, as a scene in Belgium. Until its demolition Marrowbone Lane had, in fact , such pitched roofed houses .'' Marrowbone Lane was a tenement area just off Cork Street in the Liberties and was the scene of fierce fighting just two years before this picture was painted as the Jameson Distillery there, now also demolished, was occupied under the command of Eamonn Ceannt and Cathal Brugha during the Easter Rising in 1916.

CONTACT US SKU#: 119632 US Shipping $60 + insurance. BIOGRAPHY: Born in Dublin, his early artistic efforts were rewarded at the age of 12 when one of his pictures was accepted for the annual show of the Royal Hibernian Academy, and when (in the same year) he gained the silver medal in the Royal Dublin Society Christmas Competition. From 1877-8 he enrolled in the Metropolitan School of Art as a free student, studying alonside contemporaries like Nathaniel Hill, Walter Osborne and Roderic O'Conor. In 1881, his composition featuring Medieval monks won the Albert Scholarship, after which he, Hill and Osborne travelled to the Academie Royale in Antwerp for the "Nature" course under Verlat. The following year they returned to take Verlat's "Life" class. Afterwards, the three spent time in Brittany and Normandy.Although he stayed in France until 1887, Kavanagh continued to contribute works to the RHA, and on occasion to the Royal Academy in London. Most of his Continental paintings consisted of rural and city scenes from Antwerp, Bruges, Mont St Michel, Quimperle, Dinan and Pont-Aven. One of his masterpieces of naturalism from this period is The Old Convent Gate, Dinan (1883), now in the National Gallery of Ireland. Unlike most other Irish landscape painters of "The Antwerp School", he also developed an interest in etching, using this medium to produce numerous etchings of landscapes and architectural views. However, in comparison with Nathaniel Hill and Walter Osborne, Kavanagh was far less influenced by Impressionism, and showed little enthusiasm for plein-air painting. Instead, he was more affected by the style of the Dutch painter Anton Mauve (1838-88), one of the leading artists of the Neo-Romanticist Hague School, and by rural Realists like Jean-Francois Millet (1814-75).In 1887, he returned to Dublin, settling in Clontarf where he concentrated on unpretentious local subjects - beaches, dunes, watercourses and coastal views - including numerous landscapes and seascapes of Howth, Dublin Bay and the sands of Sutton, Portmarnock, Merrion and the North Bull - another of his noted works being Cockle-Pickers on the North Bull Sands (1893). He was also drawn to marshes and riverbank scenes, especially those around Portmarnock Marsh and Killester Ponds. Meantime, in 1889, he was elected an Associate Member and in 1891 a full Academician of the Royal Hibernian Academy, where he continued to exhibit on a regular basis and also joined the teaching staff. In 1910, after he had moved to Blackrock, he was appointed Keeper of the RHA and took up residence in their premises in Lower Abbey Street. In 1916, he was present in the RHA building when it was set ablaze by exploding shells. The resulting inferno destroyed most of the RHA paintings, as well as Kavanagh's own studio. Although he was fortunate enough to escape with minor physical injuries, all his unsold paintings had been destroyed in the fire - a blow from which he never recovered. He moved into Moran's Hotel, and died two years later.Rare surviving examples of Joseph Malachy Kavanagh's paintings and drawings are represented in the collections of the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin, the Crawford Municipal Art Gallery in Cork, the Limerick City Gallery of Art, the Ulster Museum.

Joseph Kavanagh, Portrait of a Catholic Bishop

        Est: $600 - $700

Joseph Kavanagh (Irish, 1856-1918), oil on canvas portrait of John Timothy McNicholas (1877-1950), an Irish born clergyman who was named Bishop of Duluth, Minnesota, and later Archbishop of Cincinnati. McNicholas is portrayed seated in a high back chair and wearing his clergy robes. Signed lower right. Housed in a giltwood molded frame with ovolo edge and carved corner moldings. Sight - 29 3/4" H x 19 3/4" W. Framed - 35 5/8" H x 26" W. Circa 1910. Biography: Joseph Malachy Kavanagh studied at the Metropolitan School of Art and in Antwerp under Verlat. He was known particularly for his landscapes in and around Dublin. Although a prolific painter, Kavanagh's work is relatively rare. Joseph Malachy Kavanagh RHA (1856-1918)An Old Flemish Draw-Well, Merxem(1883)Oil on canvas, 68 x 45cm (26¾ x 17½'')SignedExhibited: 'The RHA Annual Exhibition', 1883, Cat. No.92; 'The Irish Impressionists' exhibition, NGI, October/November 1984, The Ulster Museum, February/March 1985, Cat. No.57.Literature: 'The Irish Impressionists', 1983, illustrated p.200.The 'Old Flemish Draw-Well, Merxem' is a companion picture to the slightly larger canvas 'Under the Shadow of St. Jacques, Antwerp', both being the most substantial pictures that Kavanagh painted in Belgium in the early 1880s. 'Under the Shadow of St. Jacques' (private collection) is an urban subject, showing two women in a courtyard fetching water, with the walls of the cathedral rising behind, while the 'Old Flemish Draw-Well, Merxem' is a rural scene, featuring two children in a sunny clearing in front of a well and tall trees. Both pictures centre upon the theme of a well or pump, with people fetching water. In both pictures, from foreground to top, Kavanagh enjoyed filling the composition with detail. Both pictures were painted in 1882 or 1883 and were exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin in 1883, and helped draw attention to Kavanagh, along with his comrades, Walter Osborne, Nathaniel Hill and others, as a generation of young Realist painters who were studying on the continent.Born in Dublin in 1856, Joseph Malachy Kavanagh won the silver medal at the RDS Christmas Competition in 1875. He studied at the Metropolitan School of Art, 1877-78, then at the RHA Schools he won the Albert Scholarship in 1881. Along with Osborne and Hill, Kavanagh travelled to Antwerp in September 1881 to enrol in the Academie Royale de Beaux Arts, one of the leading art academies in Europe. He returned to Antwerp for a second year, 1882-83. Like Osborne, he spent an increasing amount of time painting in the open air, both street scenes in the old quarter of Antwerp and rural subjects in neighbouring villages. Of all the Irish artists in Antwerp, Kavanagh was strongly influenced by the Dutch and Belgian genre tradition and by contemporary Flemish Realists, such as Henri de Braekeleer (1840-1888), Piet Verhaert (1852-1908) and Charles Mertens (1865-1919).'An Old Flemish Draw-Well, Merxem' features two children, a girl and a boy, in front of an elaborate well structure and tall lush trees on a sunny summer's day. Merxem may have been a hamlet or farm just outside Antwerp. The well provided the focal point for life in villages and rural communities, a place where women and children could gather, fetch water for their daily needs, exchange news and relax for a moment. It provided popular genre subjects for 19th century artists in Brittany, Italy and elsewhere. Osborne, for example, painted scenes of women and children at the well or pump in Belgium, Brittany and Spain. There is a certain sombre quality to some of Kavanagh's work. But 'An Old Flemish Draw-Well' shows the charming aspect of his genre paintings: in the formality of the poses of the children and the warmth of light and colouring; in the cheerful blue of the jacket, the pale umber of the girl's dress and striped red and white stockings, echoed by the touches of terracotta in the brick-work behind, set against the lush greenery of the trees. His affection for children can be seen in his later painting 'Children Playing by a Bridge', featuring a girl with child and a boy playing by a river in north Co. Dublin.'An Old Flemish Draw-Well' was exhibited at the RHA in 1883, along with several other pictures of Belgian and Irish subjects. It was one of many Kavanagh pictures in the exhibition 'The Irish Impressionists, Irish Artists in France and Belgium', held at the National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin in 1984 and the Ulster Museum, Belfast in 1985.Dr. Julian Campbell

They studied together in Dublin and in Antwerp after which they moved together to paint in Brittany.Kavanagh was exhibiting work of Pont Aven, Finistere by 1884. This would be a typical view of Breton Faggot collectors. As Keeper of the RHA, Kavanagh lived and worked at the academy and much of his work was lost at Easter 1916 when the building was burnt down as a result of British shelling.

Provenance: Cynthia O'Connor Gallery, Dublin, 22nd May 1991 Private Collection Exhibited: Exhibited RHA 1905 no.273 Joseph Malachy Kavanagh was born in Dublin in 1856. At the age of 12, one of Kavanagh's pictures was accepted for the annual show of the Royal Hibernian Academy, and in the same year he was awarded the silver medal in the Royal Dublin Society Christmas Competition. In comparison with Nathaniel Hill and Walter Osborne, Kavanagh was far less influenced by Impressionism, and showed little enthusiasm for plein-air painting. Instead, he was more affected by the Barbizon style landscape painting of the Dutch painter Anton Mauve (1838-88), a leading member of the Neo-Romanticist Hague School, and by rural realists like Jean-Francois Millet (1814-75). Kavanagh contributed works to the RHA, and occasionally to the Royal Academy in London. Most of his Continental works consisted of rural and city genre paintings produced in Antwerp, Bruges, Mont St Michel, Quimperle, Dinan and Pont-Aven. In 1891 Kavanagh became a full member of the Royal Hibernian Academy. Kavanagh's paintings and drawings are represented in the collections of the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin, the Crawford Municipal Art Gallery in Cork, the Limerick City Gallery of Art and the Ulster Museum.
