        GYOKUDO KAWAI (1873-1957): A SCROLL PAINTING OF A SEASIDE LANDSCAPE Japan, first half of the 20th century. Ink and watercolor on silk, with a fabric coated paper frame and mounted as a hanging scroll. Depicting a seaside landscape with lush hills and houses, the foreground with fishermen sitting by their boats on the shore. Signed 'Gyokudo' and sealed to the lower right, the backside with a stamp seal 'INSP. HAAG. I. & A.' With a fitted wooden box. Important notice: Please note that we will need to remove the ivory roller ends before shipping / handing over the item. The roller ends are not part of this offer. Condition: Excellent condition with hardly any wear. Provenance: Family collection of either Felix Tikotin (1893-1986) or his son-in-law Louis (Loek) Borensztajn (1935-2021), Netherlands. Felix Tikotin (1893-1986) was an architect, art collector, dealer, and founder of the first Museum of Japanese Art in the Middle East. He became one of the world's leading collectors of Japanese art, starting at the age of 18, and continued to collect and work as an art dealer in Berlin in the 1920s. In the 1930s Felix Tikotin fled from the Nazis and hid his collection in the Netherlands. After the war, he decided that his collection should be taken to Israel, where in 1959 and with the help of Abba Hushi, who was the mayor of Haifa, The Tikotin Museum of Japanese Art was established. The Museum's collection comprises more than 8,000 items of art and crafts. Dimensions: Image size 51.5 x 40 cm, Size incl. mounting 136 x 71.5 cm Kawai Gyokud ō (1873-1957), original name Kawai Yoshisaburō, was a Japanese painter in the nihonga school, active from Meiji through Shōwa period. He was noted for his polychrome and occasionally monochrome works depicting the mountains and rivers of Japan in the four seasons, with humans and animals shown as part of the natural landscape. Auction result comparison: Compare with two related paintings by the same artist, showing a similar depiction and of related size at Mainichi Auction Inc. Japan, in Special sale on 9 March 2019, lot 198, sold for EUR 20,820 and at Shinwa Art Auction, Japan, in MODERN ART on 13 September 2008, lot 116, sold for 13,240 EUR.

His popularity as an artist is evidenced by the Gyokudo Museum in Tokyo, a museum devoted to paintings by the artist. This painting on offer was purchased by the owner in Japan during Gyokudo's lifetime, perhaps from the artist himself, and has not been displayed.  From the estate of Mitsuko Tokuyasu, Yokohama, Japan.
