Midshipman at the Bar of the high Court of Justiciary for the Murder of William Jones Seaman on the Shore of Leith on the 15th of June 1814.", lower left signed and dated "I. KAY 1814" Description: Portrait of midshipman Thomas White, between two officers at the Supreme Court bench at his trial for the murder of sailor William Jones. The defendant, dressed in a naval uniform with neckerchief and ruffle, turns his head to the right, his hat laid down on the bench in front of him. Although Thomas White was later found guilty of murder, he was not given the death penalty, but sentenced to 14 years of banishment.
